It's not cool to admit this but it sucks that I've spent 15 years building up an audience on this platform and then a billionaire bought it on a lark and turned it into a megaphone for the far right

janxdevil,
@janxdevil@sfba.social avatar

@juddlegum It also sucks to be reading this off your journa.host account on the fediverse and to know that you don’t give a flying fuck about your audience on any other platform.

@juddlegum Not gonna sign up on any of those platforms, because every last one of them has the same problem that Elmo’s birdshit does.

I am not a macro-economist. All I learned on the subject was a couple of courses at UCLA long, long ago. But my sense, for what it's worth, is that Biden invoking the 14th would likely be somewhat less damaging than what the terrorists in the GOP have in mind, with their tax breaks for billionaires (yachts and jets, OK! Food stamps, no no no!). My guess is that the government would find a way to keep paying social security and medicare and critical defense functions. A lot of other spending is important but not ultra-time sensitive. The market would take a hit but would recover, and I suspect (in fact I know) is already pricing in a disruption. I think in the end Biden would get more respect than condemnation for holding firm. My fear though is that he is still a believer in the fundamental good even in the GOP, a concept that died with Goldwater.

@lauren Don’t even bother daring the Supreme Court to decide what the 14th Amendment means. Believe me, you really don’t want to turn Justice Thomas loose on that question. Just and dare them to rule that the US doesn’t have the power to coin money, because that is NEVER going to happen. Just . Mint. The. Damned. Coin.

The problem with voting for fascists is that you may agree with them now, but when you no longer agree with them there is no way to vote them out. They have made sure of that.

janxdevil,
@janxdevil@sfba.social avatar

@grumpygamer Ngl, this has never been a problem for me. I’ve never been in agreement with the fascists. Fascists have always been very clearly in favor of my immediate capture, torture and execution, and this may surprise you, but that’s never been something I’ve been comfortable overlooking while consider for whom to vote.

“The entire case for “AI” as a disruptive tool worth trillions of dollars is grounded in the idea that chatbots and image-generators will let bosses fire hundred of thousands or even millions of workers.

That’s it.”

Yep. Spot on. This is the fundamental reason that is getting so many billions poured into it. It’s the lure of replacing expensive labor with automation. Corporations have endlessly squeezed blood from lower-cost labor and they are salivating at the prospect of getting rid of high-cost labor.

This is unfortunate, because AI has actual uses. As models get more specialized and smaller, I can see AI automating a lot of rote work away at reasonable cost. Unfortunately, the corporate hype is so strong right now it’s muddying all the conversations.

Stop saying Democrats have no plan on guns. Here’s the plan.

“Once again I ask Congress to send me a bill banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Enacting universal background checks. Requiring safe storage. Ending immunity for gun manufacturers. I will sign it immediately.”

janxdevil,
@janxdevil@sfba.social avatar

@JamesGleick Not saying Democrats don’t have any plans. But I am saying that any plan that does not, by clearly stated means and with deliberate intent, produce an enormous pile of smoking scrap metal that used to be a few hundred million privately circulating personal firearms is a plan that is not designed to limit gun violence in America effectively.

Having learned other languages and lived for many years with a non-native English speaker, I think all the time about which of the English language's many quirks would infuriate me the most if I was learning it, and this one is often very high on my list

Something interesting you might not have realized: a number of words in English are nouns when you stress the first syllable but verbs when you stress the sec…

@RobertMaguire Yeah well then there’s Italian where the tense of a verb changes with stress on a different vowel. Not even when you change the sound. All you gotta do is pronounce the word with the stress on a different syllable.

Just to recap, Clarence Thomas:

-Accepted lavish trips from GOP billionaire megadonor Harlan Crow

-Had undisclosed real estate deals with Crow

-Didn’t recuse himself from a SCOTUS case that involved Crow's business

Are we really going to let him get away with this?

janxdevil,
@janxdevil@sfba.social avatar

@rbreich Just to recap, there is no practical way to discipline or remove Thomas from the court, and the only real recourse is to pack the court with a majority that will outnumber him and his allies, but that would require a functioning Senate Judiciary Committee, which is something we could easily have if the one Democratic member who will never again have the physical capacity to cast a vote would just resign and let the Democratic governor appoint their replacement. Are we really going to keep doing this? Apparently so.

Meanwhile the President of Uganda (where anti-LGBTQ laws are already unbelievably harsh) has just sent a bill that would apply the death penalty for homosexuality back to parliament because he wants it toughened further to allow for the construction of “rehabilitation” camps.

Uganda is a bit further along the road to Christian Nationalism than Missouri but not by all that much. When we tell you what bullshit to expect next if they get away with their current round of bullshit, it’s because we’ve already seen what came next after they got away with this.
