@danielpunkass @ceejbot Is this where I stand up and self-identify as the third kind of software developer: the kind that worries and hopes like hell nobody got killed, maimed or had their lives destroyed?

FYI: Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito — both of whom accepted luxury vacations from billionaires — could rule on an upcoming Supreme Court case that would ban a federal wealth tax.

If they don’t recuse themselves, why would we expect Americans to ever trust SCOTUS again?

janxdevil,
@janxdevil@sfba.social avatar

@rbreich I’d like to know why they should be trusted even if they do refuse themselves. Seems to me like the reputation of the court is damaged to the point where the whole panel should resign and a new one appointed.

    has anyone seen a really good analysis of the problems with git's command line UI? Would love to read it. for example:

    • git checkout is dangerous and has too many different jobs (though git switch is trying to fix that!)
    • for a tool that's supposed to make changes easy to undo, you actually need to learn a LOT of ways to undo

    (not looking for git tutorials, explanations of git’s underlying model, or explanations of why you think git's UI is actually good, just an analysis of the problems)

    janxdevil,
    @janxdevil@sfba.social avatar

    @b0rk I once wrote a long essay (now lost) about the problems with the branching model in Git that was basically a defense of the choice in Mercurial to use the word “bookmark” where Git uses “branch” and to use “branch” for a concept that Git does not natively have: an attribute of every commit in a lineage that identifies its named heritage.

    Because it doesn’t record a name in the lineage of related commits users are easily confused when looking at the history of a commit and trying to understand what changes came from where.

    Seeing comments writing off the Deep South bc the commenters don’t like some of the politicians there. These folks should consider that when they do that, they’re making the same mistake that white nationalists do: assuming that the only people who exist and/or matter are white Republicans. There are lots and lots of people in the Deep South who, for a host of historical & intentional reasons, cannot fully participate politically. When you write off their states, you write them off too.

    Either way, they are not making a good faith argument, and adopting their frame and repeating their rhetoric only furthers the harm they are intentionally doing.

Most them were already on that previous list.

    Just saw someone advocating progressive movements organize on the Fediverse.

    BE VERY VERY CAREFUL ABOUT SAYING STUFF LIKE THIS.

    -Most fediverse tie-ins are not architected to protect you. For instance, Mastodon Direct Messages are not encrypted and admins can access them.

    -Most instances are hosted by ordinary people who don't have the time, knowledge, or resources to fight subpoenas in either criminal or civil actions.

    Meet here. Support each other. Cheer each other on. Show solidarity, and elevate and amplify each other.

    Organize in much more restricted environments, like end-to-end encrypted messengers like Signal.
