Ah, it appears liberal cis straight white dudes are advocating for freedom of speech for nazis who want to genocide certain minorities again. If you're the type of person who says "I may not agree with what you say but I'll defend to the death your right to say it" I invite you to read up on the paradox of tolerance because saying shit like that is how fascism proliferates. Do you want fascism to proliferate?

i’m tired of clicking “open in browser” in my mastodon client to see all the replies to a post / look at a user’s profile who i don’t follow

is there any mastodon client with a “fetch more data” button or something which will automatically do this for me and show the posts to me in the client?

(right now I’m using Ivory)

janxdevil,
@janxdevil@sfba.social avatar

@b0rk I’m confused by this post. I use IceCubes, and it seems to me like it’s doing what I read you saying you want it to do. I visit a profile for someone I don’t follow whose account is on another instance, and it shows me their posts just by scrolling down. I also see the replies to a post just by swiping. I must be missing something?

sea ice remains on its own this year compared to any other July in our satellite record. Keep in mind when looking at this graph that the y-axis interval is 1,000,000 km². This is a massive deviation from the previous record for the date.

One neat feature of America for the rest of your lives is that, when you go to federal court, a coin will be flipped to see if your judge is an experienced civil rights lawyer or some right-wing weirdo who barely practiced law and worked at a slush fund for a creepy billionaire.

Ther's lots of ways to slice the coalition, but one important axis are the self-styled adults-in-the-room, who declare themselves realists, and the party's left wing, who are dismissed as idealists who don't understand politics: neither how to win elections nor how to wield power.

@pluralistic I have been saying “STOP!” to every Democrat who contacts me looking for donations, volunteers, enthusiasm, whatever for pretty much the last three years, and they haven’t stopped. It’s been a consistent drumbeat of “I want to do it, but damn you don’t you dare try to make me do it,” for all that time. Nothing has changed. I believe nothing will change. I think Deliverism has not just died. It’s been forgotten too.

Hold up.

I’ll translate from Republican to English:

Desantis signed SB 1416 into law ending permanent alimony. Money is now based on the length of marriage

So they’re not outraged for:
Inspecting youth genitalia
Destroying trans rights
Human trafficking migrants
Destroying Florida’s economy
Attacking teachers
Rampant insurance corruption

No. Something happened to them, personally

And it’s about money

Here is a thing I hope instance administrators will consider doing in response to the new app from : pay very close attention to account migration.

Don’t enable account migration to Threads on any instance at which accounts are unable to migrate from Threads. I think a quid pro quo on this point is absolutely necessary.

Don’t let Threads take accounts unless they let people come back if they don’t want to be there anymore.

Just caught a new dark pattern at play in the ongoing war against people who exercise their right to opt out of tracking cookies on web sites.

The window opens to show the specific switches that you have to click to opt out, with the settings showing them as opted in, and you start clicking them, then just as I was about to click CONFIRM MY CHOICES, all the switches toggled to show that I had just toggled them from opted out back to opted in, forcing me to click them again.

I’m gonna stop reading anything from The New Republic now. You’ll let me know when it’s safe to read them again, right?

So dear locals. My favorite automobile mechanic retired and closed shop a couple years ago, and now I need to find another. Used to be there were independent customer experience rating services that you could rely on to help you choose where to go for things like that, but the last several times I’ve tried to use one, the experience was not good. I think they somehow got enshittified.

So two questions: anybody know a good car mechanic? Also, anybody know a good referral service for things like that?

Hot take: packaging open source software is actual work (and is sometimes what we demurely call 'non-trivial' in this field). I say this as a sysadmin who has sometimes had to deal with the results of not packaging software and then not keeping up with the state of the software we didn't package but installed anyway.

(Sure, sometimes you get lucky and the packaging instructions are easy to write (Debian rules, RPM specfiles, whatever Arch uses, etc). And sometimes they aren't.)

@seachanger Moreover, the last several times somebody made a real attempt to build that inside the Democratic Party here, they all got smeared as Communists by the local DCCC officials and every last one was ratfucked completely out of local politics by their fellow Democrats. Hello members! Meta/Facebook has plans to join the Fediverse (https://mastodon.social/@fediversereport/110011775459235299). Many instance admins have committed to block any FB-run instances; others feel that federation will lead to growth of non-commercial social media and provide FB users with more choice.

To be honest, I'm conflicted. FB as a company is irresponsible and untrustworthy (https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2022/09/myanmar-facebooks-systems-promoted-violence-against-rohingya-meta-owes-reparations-new-report/). Their content moderation policies are questionable at best, their business model exploits users.

The debt ceiling deal has passed.

But it is a disgrace that Republicans brought us so close to the edge of catastrophe.

Moving forward, we must abolish the debt ceiling so that no party can use it to threaten the livelihoods of Americans for political gain ever again.

    janxdevil,
    @janxdevil@sfba.social avatar

@rbreich Again, as you very well know, Bob. The GOP never had a credible threat that they could force the US to default on its debt. It was always entirely within the unchecked power Congress already granted to the President to and render the debt ceiling irrelevant. Everyone knows this. Lordy, you’ve even demonstrated that you know this. So, we can maybe dispense now with the fiction that the GOP brought us anywhere near the brink of catastrophe. They simply did not have the power to do that. Only President Biden did, and he wisely chose a path that avoided it.
