#WritersCoffeeClub 5/20 -- When did you first know you wanted to be a writer?

Sophomore year of high school. I had an amazing English teacher who loved my reports and essays and encouraged me to focus on my writing.

It's taken...three decades, but I made it work so thank you, Mr. MacArthur!

5/17 -- Other than writing, what's your go-to creative outlet?

In theory, photography.

In practice, thinking about photography while walking and hiking without my camera.

Sigh.

Sad realization: I use TWSBIs because I'm disorganized and don't want to figure out which converter goes with which pen. #FountainPens #FountainPen

jessekelber,
@jessekelber@writing.exchange avatar

@NicoleJLeBoeuf

TWSBIs don't use converters at all, they're piston (or plunger) fillers.

I only have 580s, so can't speak to their entry-level options, but everyone I know with ECOs loves them. And I love my 580s.

This feels like something the good people of Mastodon would know. Can anyone recommend a cloud based text editor that isn't Google drive and isn't going to scrape what you write for AI?

jessekelber,
@jessekelber@writing.exchange avatar

@beanjbunny

When you say 'cloud-based,' do you include apps that sync over the cloud? Or are you looking for something you can access via web browser?
(also adding a couple of tags for a broader reach)

Anyone had the cartridge come loose in a Kaweco Sport? I've had it happen twice in the same pen and am wondering what I'm doing wrong or if it's the pen doing something wrong...

Oh, interesting. I don't know anything about Hongdian, but have started seeing a lot of mention of them recently. Did they just appear on the scene? Or do they just have really good pen PR? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Question for the hivemind:

Now that Substack has pissed everyone off...again...what are my options for a blogging platform that offers relatively easy newsletter production (free for now, paid in the future)?

I'm tired of arguing with my old WP install, but want to be sure I own my words.

Oh, and I'm far from tech-literate these days, so ease of use is high on the priority list, as well.

Much thanks!

Took Rufus to a trainer-mediated play session today and learned that like me, he's easily overwhelmed by large groups. We'll be fine as long as he gets lots of one-on-one time and small group play sessions. Who knew, I found an introverted dog!

No pictures were taken, so here's one of him begging for cheese.

What pen have you tried recently that you didnโ€™t expect to like, but were pleasantly surprised by?

jessekelber,
@jessekelber@writing.exchange avatar

@penfount
My Retro51 rollerball. I always forget how smooth it writes.

jessekelber,
@jessekelber@writing.exchange avatar

@paradoxmo

I do, yeah. The pen itself isn't a favorite as the grip is a bit slim for bigger hands. But every time I grab it, I'm reminded how much I like the refill!

How long have you been using fountain pens? What or who introduced them to you?

jessekelber,
@jessekelber@writing.exchange avatar

@penfount
Erm...going on some 15 years now, I think. If I recall, it was a blogger who posted something about how much he was loving drafting his posts since he was gifted a fountain pen. I was already a lover of all things analog, so it was an easy jump for me.

jessekelber,

@penfount
I can't argue with @josephdickson, those are spot on! I would add the LAMY Safari, even though I know it's also a bit divisive. It's a solid everyday workhorse of a pen, I've still got on in rotation despite not being a fan of the tri-grip, just because it's so damn reliable!

    First, let me say that I have massive respect for Lori Gottlieb, but I'm having trouble with the cognitive dissonance of her 2012 book "Marry him: the case for settling for Mr. Good Enough", and then.. this: https://www.onceuponabebe.com/2022/01/single-mama-spotlight-lori-gottlieb.html where she clearly states "single by choice" circa 2022. I'm like.. if someone this sophisticated, a literal therapist with incredible emotional intelligence who has written great books on this very topic (and btw quite attractive), can't find a life partner, the rest of us are sooo fucked?!

    jessekelber,
    @jessekelber@writing.exchange avatar

    @codinghorror

    Perhaps she opted out, rather than being 'unable to find' a life partner?

    This whole conversation just makes me that much happier I figured out I was ace years ago.

    Not menacing at all, Rufus, not menacing at all.
