LLMs can help you with 80-90% of the work needed to write code.

Identifying the 10-20% that they get wrong takes skill and experience.

Learning to code with AI assistance is a great practice to develop.

jesseplusplus,
@jesseplusplus@mastodon.social avatar

@evan I've found the same thing. It's easier in a language I'm familiar with, but I proceed with a lot of caution and still look up what the output is doing when it's a new language. Not doing so feels like the equivalent of yesteryear's copy-pasting some code you found on a blog without understanding it!

Happy to see South Africa and the ICJ stepping up to investigate this since the US and its allies are unwilling to stand up more forcefully and stop the heartbreaking death toll in Gaza. At the same time, presenting evidence in court while the war rages on doesn't feel like enough action...

Okay I finally did a full write up of the event I went to just before Christmas at @meta in San Francisco in which they laid out their plans for integrating Threads with the Fediverse. It's very long and thorough. Love to get people's thoughts. http://plasticbag.org/archives/2024/01/how-threads-will-integrate-with-the-fediverse/

I'm curious, how does one end up being invited to such a group?

Two important Threads updates ๐Ÿ””๐Ÿ””

First, Threads is expanding to more countries across Europe, so people there can follow and join the conversations they care about. Weโ€™re starting to roll out in more countries now on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store; www.threads.net is live everywhere now.

jesseplusplus,
@jesseplusplus@mastodon.social avatar

@mosseri Welcome, and congrats on the milestone! Very exciting times for the fediverse and greater interoperability for all social platforms ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

I've been spending a lot less time on Mastodon lately. Although the audience I've built here feels pretty engaged, I don't feel that the folks I used to follow and engage with the most (especially in tech) are here. I find myself having to go to twitter or bluesky to see those people's updates. As much as I wish it were different, I have to accept that it's not.

jesseplusplus,
@jesseplusplus@mastodon.social avatar

I'm also finding my feed here has turned into something unmanageable. I am not someone who sits and refreshes social media all day; I find that too distracting. So when I dip in to see the latest updates, the chronological feed can feel very noisy. 10 posts in a row from the same person feels exhausting. We need more controls to dial down the noise.

jesseplusplus,
@jesseplusplus@mastodon.social avatar

Another annoyance I have is folks who put super interesting stuff in their bios, and then post about literally everything else in their life except those topics! I've done a mass-unfollowing recently of people who I discovered as this place was taking off who sounded very interesting, but who seem to only post everyday annoyances on here. I'm not sure I'll ever understand people who use micro-blogging as a stream-of-consciousness chat room, rather than a micro-blog, but maybe that's just me!

jesseplusplus,
@jesseplusplus@mastodon.social avatar

I had a lot of early hope in the fediverse, but I am finding my enthusiasm waning as I see how it has played out so far. I'm still waiting to see how the threads implementation goes. I think that will be a real test of whether ActivityPub will win the federated social standards war, or if teams like Bluesky who are focusing on user experience first will eventually win.

I believe in protocols over platforms, but at the end of the day, usability always wins.

Some of you have been asking how I take fun dog pictures of my dog.

Itโ€™s mostly with the Asian squat. Without it, I would not be able to take so many โ€˜on the goโ€™ dog photos of Cookie. Squatting is so comfortable for me, itโ€™s like sitting. I remember when I read the lonely planet guidebooks for the first time I was confused why they kept saying squat toilets were hard. Only later in life did I learn: itโ€™s not universally done!

jesseplusplus,
@jesseplusplus@mastodon.social avatar

@skinnylatte I was so fascinated by this when I first encountered it! I immediately tried to start doing the squat myself more often to build the muscle memory, but I had a fitness trainer tell me recently that I wasn't doing it right at all! They said most of us westerners have such shortened muscles in the lower legs from never doing it that we can't even if we try! I was just burning out my calves attempting it ๐Ÿ˜‚ I wonder if there's an exercise series one could do to regain the ability...?

I especially appreciate how they point out that while privacy can be more expensive, so too can the bloated surveillance and data collection that the big ad-tech companies rely on.

gabek, to iOS

I was going to wait to talk about this until I could actually release it, but itโ€™s becoming unlikely that will happen.

A few months ago I built an and app for watching streams natively on your phone and tv. You could browse the directory, or add your own private servers that arenโ€™t listed publicly. It would send you push notifications when your favorite streams went live and it all worked pretty well.

Apple has been unable to understand how the โ€œrightsโ€ work in this case. I canโ€™t get them to understand that people opt into the directory, and the Owncast project owns and runs the directory. Instead they see it as me โ€œusing content without rightsโ€ and โ€œaccessing a catalog without proper rightsโ€. They asked me to provide the paperwork detailing the agreement I have with every Owncast server. Clearly thatโ€™s impossible. The number of servers that want to be public on the directory change every day, I couldnโ€™t send them new documentation every day. I tried to explain that the directory is kind of like a search engine and the application is like a browser. A browser doesnโ€™t have explicit rights to every webpage ever made, as that would be ridiculous. I also tried to compare it to a podcast client. A podcast client can play back any podcast without asking for permission, and there are tons of podcast directories.

Theyโ€™ll approve the application if I donโ€™t use the directory and donโ€™t have any Owncast servers directly available from the application, however. But Iโ€™m not willing to do that as that kind of defeats the point of the convenience.

I contacted a handful of attorneys, and I was willing to fight this. I hoped if I could get an attorney to draft a document that explains, in legal terms, something that Appleโ€™s legal team would understand it could be cleared up. But I havenโ€™t been able to have a meaningful conversation with any of them, as none of them understand what Iโ€™m doing or arenโ€™t interested in working with a non-corporate entity.

So I think this is dead, killed by Apple. I tried to build something cool for you all, as a side project, to make viewing Owncast streams more convenient. Itโ€™s just not going to happen and I feel bad about it.

@gabek they are really failing to understand fediverse apps. Iโ€™m also having issues getting approval.

Apple has now rejected my app and my appeals multiple times, telling me that I must offer @frequency's subscription as an in-app purchase and give them 15%-30% of my revenue for hosting the content simply because someone might access it via their platform.

I am so angry at this extortion.

When I pointed out that micro.blog offers the same service and uses the same mechanisms I was trying to use, they suggested I report their app to the trust and safety team for a violation. Unbelievable.
