Any sufficiently advanced third-party vendor is indistinguishable from phishing.

This sounds basically like my understanding of modern physics.

Now who wants to talk about quantum mechanics?!

When you’re #autistic and get told to interpret the social cues…

Your periodic reminder that if you don’t have a physical copy, or a download copy, or you can’t access it without contacting someone else’s server, you didn’t actually purchase a copy of the content. You purchased a revocable non-refundable license to view the content under the terms dictated by the retailer and/or content producer. In short, you paid purchase price to rent the content with unlimited views until your rental period is over (which is whenever the retailer or the (1/2)

Stolen from an group. Far more accurate than it has any right to be. Although I would question the status of Access in this meme, it definitely. could be worse. really isn't their best work.

@jgoguen @garthoid a client is moving from WebEx to Teams, after they got WebEx working very well.

I presume it's to save $, or enhance spying on their employees and suppliers.

This is something else I think gets missed when considering . Or upper management just doesn’t care, which would be far worse. Any sort of good vibes you built up with your employees is just gone. Poof, as if it never existed in the first place. It’ll be many months before you can even try to start rebuilding it, but everyone who survived layoffs has gone from your most senior and needed people to people most likely to leave when they can.

@jgoguen I think there is a problem with a "C-Suite class" who have become so divorced from the companies they supposedly run that things like productivity and morale just don't matter

jgoguen, to random

mandates are about control. If you work from home, you have more control over your time. You aren’t forced into a long (and costly) commute, you aren’t forced to take unpaid (or additional if you’re salaried) time away from family to accommodate work. And companies can claim they’re not wasting money on real estate they can’t get rid of.

If you don’t have a -Free copy, whether digital or physical, you haven’t purchased a copy. You’ve purchased a non-refundable revocable license to view the content at the service provider’s pleasure on the service provider’s terms. , it treats legitimate customers like criminals and doesn’t accomplish its stated goals (though perhaps it does accomplish its intended goals).

Pretty sure this would be right about the time of Reagan?

Anyone trying to tell you is over is trying to sell you a bridge made of shit and salt. Now, completely separate from that, entirely different, the COVID represented the first time many people were able to safely do some things in public: their own grocery shopping, visit the doctor’s office, walk around the park. A mild inconvenience for some of us allowed the rest of us to exist in public at all.

Two things to remember:

  1. Google shuts down services without regard for actual usage (still salty about Reader!). See their DNS registrar business as an example of a well-used, established, paid business service they just decided to sell off. A Google product is not a safe long-term bet, even if you're paying them for it.

  2. If you don't have a DRM-free copy, physical or digital, you've only purchased a revocable license to view the content.

So many people can’t understand why I’m against for anything beyond convenience. Just think about it though, if any biometric data is stored off-device (and I assure you it is), when (not if) that database full of biometric data gets leaked how do you plan to change your fingerprints? Your face? Your retinas?

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@jgoguen and exactly this happened when the USA left Afghanistan, leaving fingerprint readers behind for the Taliban to weaponise against anybody left in the country who had access to them

jgoguen,

@jpm And I bet they didn’t even get 5 years free credit monitoring from Experian! 🤣

A friend showed me this great "trans debate" allegory. If you read this clearly satirical thread, it's funny. Replace "Dave" with "trans" and it suddenly becomes the deadly serious conversation actually happening trying to make the anti-trans position seem more reasonable.

The only unresolved question, of course, is what about trans people named Dave? 🤔
