Just sent email to local #art gallery, that hosts #painting workshops/events/lessons - about how many of us #immunocompromised locals would really like to be able to attend their events & participate in their workshops/painting classes but are unable to because the indoor environment isn't #CovidSafe. I asked if they're planning any safer outdoors events/classes so they're more #inclusive. I hope they will.
I send emails like that to every organization that hosts events I'm interested in but aren't #CovidSafe. In the hopes that more organizations will start making some changes so those of us who are #immunocompromised aren't always excluded from #EventPlanning strategies.
Government doesn't give a damn about #disabled or #immunocompromised people but some citizens do. #Citizens run our local organizations, not #eugenics pushing government politicians.
COVID patient’s infection lasts record 613 days and spawns new mutations | bloomberg.com
"A Covid-19 patient with a weakened immune system incubated a highly mutated novel strain over 613 days before succumbing to an underlying illness, researchers in the Netherlands found."
“We emphasize the importance of continuing genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 evolution in immunocompromised individuals with persistent infections.”
As the CDC prepares to ease COVID-19 isolation guidelines, reflecting an approach similar to managing the flu and RSV, concerns grow within the community. Experts and vulnerable groups highlight the risk of diminishing the seriousness of COVID-19, fearing it may undermine efforts to protect those at highest risk and ignore the potential for long-term health effects. This pivot prompts a crucial dialogue on balancing practicality with precaution in our ongoing battle against the pandemic.
Once again, the message comes through loud and clear to people highly vulnerable to COVID/ COVID damage (including me): Tough luck. "Americans who test positive for the coronavirus no longer need to routinely stay home from work and school for five days under new guidance planned by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention." #COVID#CovidIsNotOver#LongCOVID#immunocompromised#publichealth https://wapo.st/3wosNqL
I get that we need to find ways to move on, but I really don’t understand the laissez faire attitude to #COVID. Surely air purifiers and occasional masking still have a place for infection control? Especially in health settings. Us poor immuno compromised have a hard enough time navigating the world as it is.
So, my office made attendance mandatory once a week, starting today. I've been here for 1,5 hrs and have already cried, bitten a hole into my stress relief chew toy, and stuffed my face with two bags of Haribo. I can't fucking do this, someone get me out of here please 😭 @actuallyautistic
@johne@StrassenKatze@actuallyautistic
Right. I've successfully resisted my employer's #ReturnToOffice mandate by presenting clear evidence that I'm #immunocompromised and can't make #Covid antibodies. I haven't yet told my employer that my dysregulated immune system is related to my being #ActuallyAutistic, although in fact it's a common comorbidity. Not every autist has a shonky immune system, but many of us do.
If you strongly suspect that your immune system is bad (for example, if you have asthma, hay fever and/or eczema, and if it takes you many weeks to throw off a common cold) then it might be worth trying to get tested. If, like me, you've had several Covid #vaccinations and still have no Covid antibodies then that's clear evidence that your employer ought to respect.
@skydog@thepoliticalcat considerable volunteer work can be accomplished in solitude and/or with social distancing. #introvert#ImmunoCompromised I am an indefatigable user of email, as old fashioned as that may be. Also #charitablegiving#supporting#charities makes a difference. In the aggregate "showing up" consistently gives both peace of mind and a sense of meaning in these most troubled times. #respect for the moment you #strike !
COVID is a zoonotic disease caused by eating animals. if we want to support #disabled and #immunocompromised folks, going #vegan is one of the single best things we can do to avoid a future #pandemic.
or we could stuff our faces with dead, tortured birds while the avian flu continues to jump from factory farms to wild bird populations and humans. and veganism is #ableist? sure.
The CDC released 70K+ more doses of the #RSV vaccines for babies. Get those shots! 💉
The anti-vaccine movement is starting to show in measles cases. Increase of 18% in cases and 43% increase in deaths worldwide from 2021 to 2022. Most of the #measles deaths are in young kids. 😔
A VA study found that people taking immunosuppressive drugs (so, #immunocompromised) for organ transplants, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or psoriasis are still somewhat likely develop severe COVID-19 even if they’ve been vaccinated. 22.7% of organ transplant recipients are likely to get severe #COVID, 12.8% of rheumatoid arthritis patients, 6.9% of IBD patients, and 7.3% of psoriasis patients. And Paxlovid helped a lot.
The middling results of using COVID convalescent plasma (given to #immunocompromised ppl who can’t take anything else) may be down to timing - if you give it late, it doesn’t have much of an effect. Also, the vast majority given plasma were also on steroid drugs at the time, which may have affected the plasma’s impact. (You take steroids to reduce inflammation from hyperactive immune response.) It emphasizes the importance of giving COVID convalescent plasma in first week.
Still behind with #TWiVTLDR but I need to knit a Christmas gift and I think this is good background noise for that, so I may be catching up soon! 🤞🏻 This Week in Virology from November 9: https://www.microbe.tv/twiv/twiv-1060/
Dr. Griffin says we’re still seeing about 200 deaths a day from #COVID, and hospitalizations are starting to tick up.
#COVID convalescent plasma (for #immunocompromised people who can’t take anything else) given to ventilated patients had the greatest effect if given within 48 hours. Waiting to see how people do is not useful.
Anyone trying to tell you #COVID is over is trying to sell you a bridge made of shit and salt. Now, completely separate from that, entirely different, the COVID #MaskMandates represented the first time many #immunocompromised people were able to safely do some things in public: their own grocery shopping, visit the doctor’s office, walk around the park. A mild inconvenience for some of us allowed the rest of us to exist in public at all.
@degrowthuk it would be lovely. I'd love to submit. I would love to attend a conference like this in Europe.
However there's no Public Health Policy. I know that degrowth UK isn't organising, but I don't feel that there's full solidarity when a sizable number of us who are #immunocompromised , or have family who they need to be care for. Folks like us are who are interested in degrowth don't know if it's safe to attend.
The EPOCH-US Study 'results showed COVID-19 can cause severe health issues in #immunocompromised people and the use of vaccinations, medications, and other measures to prevent COVID-19 are especially important for immunocompromised people.'
Anyway if anyone is looking for a speaker/presenter, I'd appreciate being thought of. I missed out on a great opportunity today. Being #immunocompromised is impacting my career in big ways. I already left med school and now even health equity spaces seem to have forgotten about #disabled people. I'd really love a chance to grow in this field. Please think of me if you see things that might fit.
Between not masking, not testing (or charging for tests) stockpiling, rather than deploying #COVID19 vaccines, not filtering enclosed spaces, the government is masking its failure to get to grips with this virus and selling out the vulnerable & immunocompromised
