@snazzyq this is probably the most confusing part of Mastodon to people who don't understand federation and what-not.

I’m poking around Bluesky finally and my initial thoughts are:

  • sign up is smooth
  • the app is okay
  • there must be 59,000 accounts right now because 20 of my 21 followers are following 59,000 accounts and they just follow…everyone?
  • the “what’s hot” page is a good way show mildly interesting stuff before you follow anyone, would hopefully get better in the future

Overall, it could be interesting, but all of this really depends on the people showing up and sticking around.

@matt The problem with the “I like Twitter but dislike the leadership” part is a lot of us really disliked the leadership before Elon took over also, and that leadership is now leadership-ing Bluesky.

@NovaNaturalist @Bannatyne84 @drewtoothpaste I couldn’t care less about date formats. I say "May 4th" out loud, and usually write it in ISO yyyy-dd-MM, which is obviously the correct way and that's why it's called an international standard

As for pints, I totally agree. The US method for weights and measures is bonkers and confusing

For temperature, I'm Fahrenheit for "feel" and Celsius for everything else. 0º-100ºF is a perfect scale for ambient temps.

@NovaNaturalist @Bannatyne84 @drewtoothpaste Dammit, you’re right! Editing FTW!

Hey @1Password. When are you going to add autofill if there's only one stored password for a site? The number of mouse clicks required to log in is completely unacceptable. If Chrome can do it, why can't you?

jimmylittle,
@jimmylittle@hachyderm.io avatar

@allenholub Totally agree. Apple Keychain autofill and Chrome's saved passwords do it right. Show me a pop-over and I can confirm. Easy.

We're an all-Apple family, so as soon as Apple's Keychain/Password system supports family sharing (which we use in 1Password extensively), I may ditch 1P altogether.

@kyleford @MonaApp I was a Spring user, and have been on the Mona beta since the beginning. It was by far my favorite Twitter client, and is by far my favorite Mastodon client.

Now, if they would only make an email app...

Rivian’s new dash cam feature is awesome. It’s so… “friendly.” Tesla originally had you format your drive and create a TeslaCam folder on your computer but Rivian just does everything for you and it’s nice. The viewer also works great!

If you built a macOS desktop app that makes notification sounds even when the machine is in "Do Not Disturb" focus mode you should feel very bad about what you have done

(My laptop made two mysterious ping noises during the online talk I gave this morning)

jimmylittle,
@jimmylittle@hachyderm.io avatar

@film_girl @simon You can stop syncing Focus. I have Focus syncing disabled on my Mac because it is always in DoNotDisturb. Phone and iPad sync.

I’d really like Apple Wallet to support Family Sharing - it seems so archaic to text boarding passes to my wife after I check in for a flight.

jimmylittle,
@jimmylittle@hachyderm.io avatar

@greg yeah, I think that’s only for Apple Card. Other passes, airline/concert tickets etc don’t seem to have a way to share with a person without texting them a Wallet card

Just curious, but on Ebay, is there some strategy that I can't fathom for putting a "Make an Offer" button on a listing and then not accept any offers? Seems to be commonplace.

jimmylittle,
@jimmylittle@hachyderm.io avatar

@allenholub Dark Patterns.

“Make an Offer” should be called “Made Ya Click!”. Undisclosed minimum bids cause people to watch the item or raise their bids until something is accepted.

something something engagement…

Going to a wedding soon, and meeting some family from the other coast in St. Louis.

I'm trying an experiment using a shared Apple Note with 4 people to plan the trip, and it’s working remarkably well dropping in pdfs, links, photos, and maps.

I also use @Flighty Pro, so I’m able to input EVERYONE’S flights and drop links into the note so we can all track. Having the Flighty web UI for for non-subscribers, coupled with the “track friend’s flight” feature is pretty rad. 🛫

so - the kind that you put on a to direct the rainwater careening down your roof. curious if anyone has thoughts? particularly interested in combining reasonable cost with eco-friendliness?

(some initial ponderings)

  • Could I pipe the water from the gutters and create a small pond (like, really, really small)?
  • Could I pipe the water into containers to use for watering the lawn?
  • Should I get gutter covers to keep the leaves out?

jimmylittle,
@jimmylittle@hachyderm.io avatar

@davidshq Rain barrels are the best. 5 stars.

Gutter covers work, but still require a bit of maintenance. Leaves will still accumulate on top of the guards requiring occasional clearing, but way easier than digging them out of the downspouts.

The worst part about federated social media is people trying to explain federated social media.

People don’t care. They just want to read stories and talk to their internet friends.

How long has Apple been trolling for reviews? This is the first time I’ve seen it.

snazzyq, to random
@snazzyq@mas.to avatar

I find long-pressing to be quite a lazy UX element. It’d be neat if Apple could invent something that detected pressure or force—it could save a lot of time and prevent toggle misfiring—probably too advanced and futuristic though.

Apologies for all the blur, but I’m really enjoying using @obsidian’s Canvas to deal with my week and I want to give them a shout out.

Each meeting gets a note, and I make a Canvas every Monday with all my notes for the week, along with a - driven Weeknote that pulls in all the relevant info. It’s super useful.

jimmylittle,
@jimmylittle@hachyderm.io avatar

@jasonclarke I have a Shortcut that I run every Monday morning. It goes through my work calendar for the week and creates a note for each non-all-day event with the name, time/date, organizer, attendees, and the event notes and saves it in my vault.

Once all the notes are created (which takes about 5 seconds), I open my Canvas for the week (also a template created by Shortcuts) and manually arrange the notes.

A bit dated, but: https://www.cocktailsandcoffee.com/automating-meeting-notes-with-ios14-shortcuts

You know how some people said that, amazing though she was, RBG should have retired from the Supreme Court at the appropriate time to avoid handing an open slot to someone like Trump?

Today, Joe Biden announced his candidacy for a 2024 run.

jimmylittle,
@jimmylittle@hachyderm.io avatar

@BodyofBreen I was totally one of the people shouting that RBG should have retired immediately after the 2012 election.

But Biden is a bit different. If he kicks it in office, at least the seat doesn’t flip.

The real danger is him keeling over during the summer of ’24 when the primaries are over and the election is between an alive person and a not-alive person.

I miss quote tweeting the most. I rarely abused it and I think the argument it was primarily used for abuse both devalues the real value of why USERS invented the quote tweet to begin with and gives too much power to the so-called abuse that could be better solved with better abuse/block tools.

jimmylittle,
@jimmylittle@hachyderm.io avatar

@film_girl The whole concept that “we don’t have quote-posts because people can use it for abuse” is (pardon my bluntness) fucking dumb.

Social media as a whole is regularly used for abuse, yet here we are. Eliminating abuse on social media can only be achieved by eliminating social media entirely.
