Hi! I'm Jim Salter, aka mercenary_sysadmin, aka "the biggest ZFS stan on the planet."

I am not Jim Salter, the Associated Press reporter based in Missouri. That's a different guy, and he hides from the Internet.

Often late at night I'll send myself notes to remind future me of ideas for episodes and topics etc. I've just sent myself this and it's going to take some time to process it. Can I really bring myself to do something so monstrous? Tune in soon to find out!

@JoeRess Felim is usually right.

Except about KDE! 🤠

There are both pros and cons to Mastodon, when comparing/contrasting with Twitter.

Here's one MASSIVE con on Twitter's side of the balance sheet:

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

Twitter is absolutely LITTERED with batshit insane people you've never heard of who somehow have 500,000 followers. Now you know why.

I expected this to be like buying MP3s in the early 2000s. Nope. It's more like buying print-on-demand T-shirts.

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@JoeRess well, you apparently can't buy a handjob for a horse.

I wonder if he tried offering TWO horses

Good(ish) news, everyone!

I got off my ass and set up a vhost on a different webserver for the (bare) practicalzfs.com. It just redirects to discourse.practicalzfs.com for the moment, but that's enough to give it its own SSL certificate so nobody who types in the barename gets a cert mismatch error.

Baby steps? :)

@koen is this really even ZFS, though? This is more #jimbeingslightlylesslazy than #zfs. 🙃

We're having a VERY normal one on this side of the pond, y'all.

Yes, this really was an ad released by the Trump campaign. Yes, it really does feature the words "industrial strength significantly increased driven by the creation of a unified reich."

If we in the USA actually elect this asshat for a second term, y'all who live elsewhere need to MASSIVELY step up your military budgets. Please.

I love BSD in any flavor, but weird to see someone say zfs is developed Linux first. Is this really the case?

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@fmo @webframp I would not agree that there is a "prime platform" for openzfs, from the perspective of the actual developers who work on it. It's a unified codebase.

It might very well be the case that the majority of the devs are themselves primarily using Linux these days, but that does not make openzfs a "Linux first" project.

I think AI music generation has reached a similar level as AI image generation. Behold, "sad girl on piano sings the MIT license" as generated by suno dot ai:

Hey everybody! PSA:

Both 2.5admins.com and practicalzfs.com are currently offline, due to their entire datacenter also being offline, possibly due to extreme inclement weather.

We have full backups, and are monitoring the situation at the datacenter to determine if/when we give up on them and spin up a new host elsewhere.

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

We're back up, everybody--no idea yet what happened at the datacenter.

@jimsalter @JoeRess in one of the recent 2.5 admins you all discussed impact of turning computers on and off on HDs. I have to admit, Im one of the dirty people who typically turns their desktop off when they are done using it. Not my homelab equipment, just my desktop. So recently i have started using suspend. Does suspend have less impact on internal parts then a full shutdown and power on? I suspect the system is sending power to internal parts in suspend and doesnt give such a jolt on wake?

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@rottedmood @JoeRess nope, sorry. HDDs are spun down in suspend, as are fans. You get the same startup current on wake as you would from a full power down.

I'm probably never going to write the actual article I'd originally intended these charts for. But if you want to see the difference between latencies between and on an eight-drive system that's creating and replicating automated snapshots regularly, here ya go.

We're looking at fio random access, limited to (simultaneous) 8MiB/sec read and 23.0MiB/sec write. The system has eight 12TB Ironwolf rust drives, in four ZFS mirrors vs one eight-wide btrfs-raid1.

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@ojs what we're seeing here is much worse than either of those cases. These are log-scale graphs, meaning each major line on the Y axis represents an increase of 10x.

Take the read latency chart: for roughly 40% of the ENTIRE range, btrfs is 10x OR MORE slower to return each block than ZFS is. This is not a minor issue, it shows you a massive degradation that you will experience constantly with a similar workload.

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@ojs moving on, because this is a rate-limited workload, that means we're not seeing how each system performs under the worst possible conditions on an unreasonably heavy workload: we're seeing how it operates with a REASONABLE workload that the hardware is more than capable of sustaining.

It's been griping me for YEARS that can only give a progress bar for the CURRENT replication task, not for the entire job (when it involves multiple datasets).

The problem is that it relies on an external program for the progress meter, which means you can only meter the one task at a time.

That's gonna change real soon. We gonna have simultaneous progress bars for the current task, and for the ENTIRE set of tasks:

I think we need some laws with real teeth in them about training AI models to fraudulently deceive humans into believing they are also human.

I asked one to speak to its supervisor today, and it claimed "there is a real live human here, so I am disconnecting."

Thing is, I never accused it of being a robot... but it's been trained to lie about NOT being one. Strongly. Explicitly.

AFAICT that's technically legal (in the USA). It shouldn't be.

If you want to convince an "esteemed journalist" that your project deserves to fail horribly, and for said journalist to consider ways to help make it happen, talking about your "last follow-up" on your very first message is a great way to do it.

I will never understand why people tolerate this shit.

It's a very sad sign for society at large when a network with the history and prominence of NBC decides that running grift ads via Taboola for a few pennies is a good idea.

(And I PROMISE there's nowhere you can stab your phone with a toothpick to make it block ads.)

Well everyone, it's the first week in July, and CEO Steve Huffman is still a lying asshat who treats Redditors as voiceless resources to exploit. So, as promised, I'm off Reddit and out of r/zfs for good.

The good news is, Practical ZFS is up and running as a replacement, with more than 100 registrations in its first day online and more continuing to come in. I hope to see you there soon!

Hide yo wife, hide yo kids, Reddit admins comin 'for ERRYBODY.

I thought they were coming for r/zfs at first but nope, they were coming for r/25admins, which has only 250 subscribers and had no activity at all for a YEAR prior to the protest.

It's official: in accordance with overwhelming community consensus and support, reddit.com/r/zfs is now your one stop shop for discussion of and memes about zfsboutique.com, Zalando Fulfillment Solutions, and zinc formaldehyde sulfate.

Don't like it? Blame CEO Steve Huffman.

jimsalter, to reddit
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

r/zfs remains dark, alongside many of the largest subreddits in existence. This was not the original plan, but Huffman REALLY raised the stakes by declaring that the protest was just "noise" to be ignored.
