If your justification for the genocide of the Palestinian people is that what Israel’s doing is legal, may I remind you the Holocaust was legal too. Hitler was acting entirely within the laws of Nazi Germany while committing the genocide of the Jewish (and Roma, and gay, and disabled, …) people.

Legal does not mean moral, just, or right.

If something is legal but unjust, it is your moral duty to break the law.

No social progress has ever come about without moral people breaking unjust laws.

@aral I saw 10.000 dead children, and I turned away because they had been killed legally

    @WhyNotZoidberg national ID is a controversial subject in the UK. There is no national ID card and the most common forms of ID are passports or driving licenses, which not everyone has and also cost money

    Just installed the Prosody server on my home server using the module and a Let's Encrypt certificate. Everything just works out of the box, including E2E encryption and push notifications to Monal on iOS.

    @evan Great news. It seems unfair for the article to say that Sweden was the first EU state to recognize Palestine in 2014, however, when e.g. Romania has had bilateral relations since before 1988, and been an EU member since 2007. Sweden was the first Western European state to do so.

    I can never understand the people who use an analog face on a smartwatch. (e.g. Apple Watch) Digital faces are both more readable (legible?) and the natural choice for a smartwatch IMO.

    jkxyz,
    @jkxyz@hostux.social avatar

    @bbatsov I prefer how analog clocks look. It's also easier to track seconds with the second hand, which on a digital clock would require having a third number visible that updates every second. For the form factor of a watch with complications, I think that analog is the natural choice because it conveys the information with very little space.

    jkxyz,
    @jkxyz@hostux.social avatar

    @bbatsov It’s funny because I think part of the reason I like the analog faces is because I can’t wear both an analog watch and my Apple Watch simultaneously. And I’d prefer to keep the Apple Watch on all the time for its health monitoring. That said I still prefer the classic design of an analog watch face.

    @bbatsov the Garmin “hybrid” smartwatches look kind of cool in that regard!

    @evan I was “somewhat agree”, only because I think it’s still an open question whether social media in general makes me happy. Maybe it serves an overall beneficial purpose beyond just happiness. I am happy to be here, though!

    We worry about providing Universal Basic Income because people might stop working, but here's a thought: maybe, just maybe, with a little financial security, people might actually pursue work they truly choose rather than work to just not die. Imagine that world for a moment.

    jkxyz,
    @jkxyz@hostux.social avatar

    @freemo @scottsantens I think you’re saying the same thing, that if people are given money without any strings attached then they will not start working but use that money for nefarious purposes. There’s been quite a lot of research showing that unconditional cash donations are very effective at easing extreme poverty, which counters your point that it makes things worse: https://poverty-action.org/impact/cash-transfers-changing-debate-giving-cash-people-living-poverty

    The North America conference is being sponsored by Anduril Industries, an American defense contractor founded by Palmer Luckey, who specialize in manufacturing autonomous weapons for the DoD:

    The community does not need or want their blood money. I am shocked that the Foundation would even consider accepting this sponsorship.

    Anduril should be disinvited.

    desperately trying to sell me up on a new MacBook by sneaking in random bugs, like it suddenly decides over night that connecting a Dell display over USB-C no longer works.

    I don't know what quarrel Apple has with but the two never got along well.

    I think it's time to finally switch to the ThinkPad and get over with this.

    jkxyz,
    @jkxyz@hostux.social avatar

    @daviwil @louis I try to be careful with this too as USB-C ports are very fragile and on ThinkPads they’re soldered directly to the motherboard, so quite difficult to repair.

    I was really grateful that I use recently, when I had a friend come by to record some music together after I'd just updated to NixOS 23.11. While setting up I realized that something had changed in - my usual inputs had renamed and I couldn't connect Pianoteq to Reaper. After messing around for 5 minutes I decided to just reboot and select the last working config from the boot menu. Started up again with the older version of PipeWire and everything was working as usual!

    @feoh If I close the lid, it successfully resumes after opening and then restarts after 2 minutes. Haven't figured out how to fix this yet.
