Hot tip for anyone interested in getting into (modern)

  1. Get a good VPN so that you can access the BBC iPlayer and watch for free

  2. DO NOT START WITH ROSE OR ANY EPISODES 1!!! Instead start with these episodes:

s1e6: Dalek
s2e4: Girl In The Fireplace
s3e10: Blink
s4e10: Midnight
s5e10: Vincent & the Doctor
s6e11: God Complex
2013: Day Of the Doctor
s8e4: Listen
s9e5: Girl Who Died
s10e3: Thin Ice
s11e6: Demons Of The Punjab
s11 special: Resolution

@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

Why these you ask? Because they are stand-alone episodes highlighting the character of (a) their Doctor, (b) their relationship with their companions, (c) their writers and showrunners, (d) different (arche)types of DW stories.

You can then pick and choose what you prefer most and dive into that particular era.

No need to thank me :)

@aoanla Oouuh boi… s12 Villa Diotati might’ve made the cut, this is excellent. But then it ties a bit too much into the finale. And Fugitive is good but sits at a weird place with its connection the finale. The rest of s12 was mostly fine but not really good. And the less is said about s13 the better… Let’s just say I‘m not the biggest Chibnall fan in the world 😉

@lohihilo I use NordVPN and it works like a charm. They have some discounts right now, if you use a VPN regularly, this might be a good option.

There's probably one issue I have with a lot of RTD-written episodes of Season One: they rarely establish a rulebook and play by it. It's all very vague and whimsical a la "and then this happened". In "The Giggle" we had some rules laid out with the Toymaker but e.g. in "The Devil's Chord" I had no idea why stuff that happened actually happened. It's a bit similar with "73 Yards", which was held together by atmosphere and Millie Gibson.

@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

I rather prefer episodes that set out some rules, establish a "lay of the land" as fantastical as it may be, but then stick to it and enable you to understand why something happens. Sometimes RTD manages that, or has enough going for an episode that it doesn't bother me as much, but more often than not I feel a bit lacking in understanding.

jynersolives,
@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

@aoanla True, RTD has his style. But here it seems amped up to eleven, it all feels a lot like wiggling your arms and see what kind of card falls out of your sleeves. I don’t mind magic in DW, but you need some kind of rules to not make it meaningless. Again, I enjoy the characters of the Doctor and Ruby, I love Boom and am intrigued by 73 Yards. I just wish it wasn’t all mystery box trick of cards.

Hey y'all. So... since I was in Junior High, my fellow nerds were always watching Doctor Who on PBS.

I never got into it but due to the fact that I traveled in D&D, chess, home computer, board games (Diplomacy, anyone?) & other nerd circles, I knew about how the Doctor was a Timelord, changed bodies every season or so & the Cybermen & Daleks & many enemies of the Doctor were legendary.

I'm in my mid-50s now & I've never seen a single episode of . So...

Where should I start? 😁

jynersolives,
@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

@kurtsh Oooh boy... I would start with some stand-alone episodes AND NOT with "Rose" or "The Eleventh Hour" or any of those Episodes 1. Start with (DW 2005):

s1e6: Dalek
s2e4: The Girl In The Fireplace
s3e10: Blink
s4e10: Midnight
s5e10: Vincent and the Doctor
s6e11: The God Complex
2013 special: The Day Of the Doctor
s8e4: Listen
s9e5: The Girl Who Died
s10e3: Thin Ice
s11e6: Demons Of The Punjab
s11 special: Resolution

That will give you a taste of every Doctor before the current one.

jynersolives,
@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

@kurtsh This epsiodes are all stand-alone and not tied into a season arc (with the exception of DotD which is kind of a best of, and Resolution which brings some closure to some aspects of s11). All these episodes showcase the current Doctor and their companions and are offering a lot of flavors of DW. If you watch those you get a good overview over the different styles of different Doctors, writers and showrunners. And then you can pick an choose a season to start with.

@kurtsh Hot tip: if you have a VPN you can access DW on BBC iPlayer!

doesn’t make a lot of sense but of the four "magical" episodes so far, it utilized the fantasy angle the best imo. Great performance by Millie Gibson, without her all the plot would fall into one of its many holes. Still on the fence with this iteration of DW, but the casting is super strong and I‘m really glad that Gibson will stay on for one more season

jynersolives,

@GreakKingRat She stays on for the next season as well.

Fantastic interview with Elias Toufexis on in . It also strengthens my belief that VA is different from acting and you cannot just take a live-action actor and give them a VA role.

Man, thanks to my two infections in 2020 and 2022 I have absolute brain rot at times. I forget stuff so damn fast and easy, never had that before. And sometimes I'm standing there, looking for words in stories I was telling a million times before. Fckd up.

I haven’t seen a lot of discussions on my home feed, despite the fact that I follow a good many hashtags and Trekkies. Is nobody watching the final season?

jynersolives,
@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

@aoanla @mrdalesmith That’s the thing: Trek being on Paramount means less people watching it. Or pirating it. The Netflix deal was great for increasing viewership. Now it’s mainly the nerds watching.

jynersolives,
@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

@ryanbmarx Sad that it’s no longer on Netflix, I‘m not getting another streamer that has nothing else of interest to me. Maybe I pirate it when the whole season is out.

jynersolives,
@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

@Techronic9876 Since it’s no longer on Netflix…

jynersolives,
@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

Great to hear on the replies that people seem to watch and enjoy the final season of ! It's just that I won't subscribe another US-centric streaming service. There's still all the old Trek available on Netflix here in Germany. I will pirate Disco once its finished. It was imo really a mistake from Paramount to go into streaming.

Now I watched and... well that was an hour of television. In some respect that worked better than , in others it... didn't, at least for me. Gatwa brings a lot to and there's enough mystery around Ruby to keep me watching. But let's just say that I'm really glad the next episode is written by .

jynersolives,
@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

@mrsjmccrimmon Looking forward to this week as well, a companion-centered episode ought to be good!

If you have the chance, after watching Boom, check out the Boom commentary video. This is absolutely smashing, RTD and the Moff are discussing everything, sometimes also the show. And then there's that one new Who trivia about Pertwee... 😉

jynersolives,
@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

@mrsjmccrimmon I'm intrigued by Ruby but I'm a bit scared that, in true RTD fashion, it won't be very satisfying in the end. Maybe she's the one who waits? Or her parents? Or she is the weapon to stop the one who waits?
