@bookstodon In my quest for physical copies of several out of print books, I have had some success with BookFinder, Abe, Thrift Books, Bookshop, and Better World Books. Are there other services I should try?

I'm trying to expand my Stephen Graham Jones collection in particular, and it's daunting, esp. finding THE LONG TRIAL OF NOLAN DUGATTI in print. Ha. Maybe it's my long trial.

karabaic,
@karabaic@mastodon.social avatar

@kimlockhartga for those that have isbn numbers, isbn.nu is a good meta-search.

There are private listservs and old-fashioned bbs’s that rare book shops use to talk amongst themselves. If you have one in your town, make friends with them & they can post and keep an eye out for you. Significant Books in the Oakley neighborhood of Cincinnati (may their memory be a blessing) used to be my hookup.

@majorlinux The implication here is that  is trying to undermine carriers? You can buy online through your carrier. I’ve done this for the last 10 years, and was grateful for it during lockdowns.

Is another assumption that you may need to enable Significant Locations, which is something you can currently turn off?

karabaic,
@karabaic@mastodon.social avatar

@majorlinux Then who is the “thief” that the author is implicating? I concluded, from your post, that  was “stealing” business from carriers through adding friction to in-store sales via this feature.

I then proposed they were stealing your privacy by monetizing SL, currently opt-out but maybe required for this feature.

Maybe this is too subtle for me. Do you know what the author is implying through that sub-hed?

karabaic,
@karabaic@mastodon.social avatar

@synxiec @majorlinux that subhed is anything but direct. “Maybe you can find the thief during all this” is a kind of rhetorical twist that’s combined with the single use case where it can go wrong: the carrier store & buying direct as a solution. The sunhed appears to be a commentary on the feature, saying it’s stealing from…the carriers?

Probably just me reading too much into the subhed, but I don’t think I’m alone…

Here is an interesting experiment design (I couldn’t do since it makes me too sad.)

2 sets of ants. The control group is washed, placed alone in the territory of another colony (one at a time) until they are attacked— but then they are rescued via asperator washed again and returned home.

The test group is washed & disguised with alien pheromones and returned to their home colony until they get attacked by their sisters but then they are rescued washed again and returned home.

karabaic,
@karabaic@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird @ariadne Do ants know when they, themselves, smell “wrong”? Could you add a step in this experiment where you isolate ants before and after foreign chemicals are applied to determine self-detection?

Dear friends,

@bookstodon etc. Here is my Tentative reading list for 2024. I am for 12 novels a year, but life, writing, my family, it can all get in the way. For '23 I read 12 things, but they weren't all novels, so thats a half pass. The list:

Any sequels I'm up to (3 trilogies in this case), lotr i read recently but I loved it so much I'm thinking of doing it again. Dispossessed was on 23s list.

Have you read any of these, what's your take? Any suggestions or definite 'don't read that!'

What was the first Norman Lear show you ever saw? When? How old were you? How did it affect you? https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/norman-lear-dead-dies-tv-legend-all-in-the-family-1235823995/

All in the Family, first run, 1972. I was 9. I realized folks I agreed with (Meathead) could be unlikeable, and folks I disagreed with (Archie) were human. And I had a crush on Gloria.

karabaic,

should’ve just been called the show, but every cast member # amazing in it. It reminded me of my Corona, Queens neighborhood and the junk shops in adjoining Willets Point. I learned that LA had neighborhoods just like mine in NYC.

@thepoliticalcat Of course, and vice versa, sometimes. Steptoe and Son didn't feature Black protagonists, and a case could be made for courting risk-averse network execs by choosing an adaptation for a Black sitcom. (It was a licensed adaptation, not plagiarism or a rip-off.)

And the American Office >> the British Office. I will die on this hill.

Comcast still "requires" you call them and give them a reason for disconnecting service-- they won't move on from that question until they get an answer.

Luckily, "The squirrels are using my Wi-Fi to plot against me" seems to be an acceptable reason that results in no further questions.

karabaic,
@karabaic@mastodon.social avatar

@laen the only worse disconnection experience is natural gas, here into the pacnw. You have to have them disconnect from the street and remove the meter, otherwise you're still charged monthly for the gas connection. Took a friend 3 tries over almost as many months.

Currently watching “Scavengers Reign “ episode nine. I seriously don’t know why more people aren’t turned onto this show?

Beautiful animation.
Well crafted science fiction.
Great voice actors.

It is by far the best sci-fi show that’s on streaming at this moment. If you have Max (HBO) you’ve got to check it out.

@gamingonlinux Thanks for this article. I knew about the Prop 8 stuff, but was fuzzy on the ad-blocking tech.

It's interesting to me that, rather than replacing behavior-based advertising with the proven content-based advertising model, Brave decides to double-down on enshittification by adding shady crypto to the mix. This was the connection I needed.

A pox on Google and Brave. Fuck em all.

The media is finally starting to report Trump’s statements for what they are: Fascist. He’s using Hitler’s own words about “vermin” and immigrants “poisoning the blood” of Americans. He’s calling for mass detention of migrants and threatening to come after his political enemies and seek retribution if re-elected. He must never be. America’s future is on the line.
