With Google's main search becoming more unreliable and the Internet itself becoming polluted with generative nonsense, I find myself searching on scholar, books, and my local library's OCLC interface and limiting myself to results from 2022 or earlier. This seems extreme.

What are you doing?

"Consent Mode is off by default" should be the unofficial motto of the tech industry. https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/15/24130832/limitless-ai-pendant-wearable-meetings

karabaic,
@karabaic@mastodon.social avatar

@andybaio Gotta wonder how this works in multi-person consent states? Would a person recorded without their consent be able to take action against Limitless? Betting the user agreement indemnifies Limitless from the purchaser, but not sure how that would work for the person recorded.

karabaic,
@karabaic@mastodon.social avatar

@stg That makes sense for a generic recorder used in a place with no expectation of privacy with other uses, like recording music.

This is specifically designed to record human interactions and has a consent setting turned off by default.

Is there a colorable argument that the service provider knows the product has consent issues?

I'm thinking something like the product liability lawsuits against gun manufacturers who marketed guns for particular uses?

If you really want to troll Star Trek fans, tell them:

  • Star Trek V was the best movie ever
  • the novels, comic books, and video games are canon
  • D.C. Fontana was the real visionary, not Gene Roddenberry
  • TOS implies a dystopic vision of humanity, not utopic
  • the reason a Star Trek future is not bound to happen is because someone in Star Trek’s timeline travelled to the 1960s, got a job as a sci-fi writer by recalling their lived history, and this therefore has changed our timeline.

I suspect VR headset manufacturers with pass-through capabilities are going to have to try find ways to minimize or ideally prevent drivers wearing them while driving. It's not going to be easy to do this while not preventing passengers from wearing them, but the specter of a driver going literally blind instantly when a headset crashes or pass-through is otherwise disabled is nightmarish.

@cstross @lauren I'm sure VisionOS has the same system built in, as it comes from the same codebase.

Of course, I have not tested how macOS responds in this situation, and now I do, since "Focus" state is, by default, shared across all  devices attached to the same iCloud account.

karabaic,
@karabaic@mastodon.social avatar

@lauren @cstross Passengers are subject to the motion-based prescription, unless they're connected to vehicle Bluetooth or WiFi (via CarPlay or not). They must confirm they are not driving before devices unlock.

karabaic,
@karabaic@mastodon.social avatar

@lauren As @cstross pointed out: an insurance company or court would take tampering or customization of a built-in security system seriously, in line with local laws, both statutes and common law, for determining liability.  is in the clear, I think, unless a case can be made that the consequences of evasion or customization were not fully clear. But my iPhone always prompts me...

karabaic,
@karabaic@mastodon.social avatar

@lauren I agree that Teslas are poorly designed.

I also accept your case for a layered approach for AR technology: a fail-safe see-through mode for software or hardware failure. It is a great idea.

In fact, this lack of a fail-safe mode, and the fact that an engineering practitioner like you immediately & clearly saw the need based on common (mis)use cases, might make  liable!

karabaic,
@karabaic@mastodon.social avatar

@lauren @lain_7 @cstross Liability law, both statute & common, and insurance company policy, as I stated previously.
