Does the Apache 2 license require that code is posted publicly? Can you privately share code under Apache 2?

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

Seems like it is a thing you can do, but nobody talks about it

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

I’m trying to share code between 2 companies, neither cares enough to exchange money, but the providing side wants protections that Apache 2 provides. Unsure if that’s in bounds

    I’m a little baffled how you can train a model on so much text and yet your tokenizer will still identify weird Reddit and Bitcoin Talk usernames like “petertodd” and “ davidjl” as being worthy of an entire token. Something about that seems off.

    kellogh,
    @kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

    @matthew_d_green I’m not baffled by it, but maybe I should be. It seems obvious that the tokenizer is the least sophisticated step, a la how a lexer isn’t knowledgeable about grammar. But now you got me thinking about failure modes and what do they actually do here…

    @michaelrowe01 i could see some killer applications in manufacturing and chemical engineering. a lot of what they do is incredibly visual. pics help a lot, but having the full 3D would be absolutely huge for helping someone diagnose issues that aren’t on a computer

    A few thoughts on the Apple headset:

    • Sure, it’s too expensive and all that, that’s sort of background noise compared to the overall vision
    • They have made a very good version of a device in a category that nobody is even certain exists; this will likely decide finally whether this category is real or not
    • Very, very little of the demos of the platform were about “3D” experiences — it’s largely 2D in a virtual or augmented space; this is the most significant philosophical difference
    kellogh,
    @kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

    @anildash this seems like a weird take (that they’re shipping slower bc this took a long time). I look at this and see absolutely massive technology investment and wonder how they did it so quickly. New chips, new OS, tons of CV applications…

    As I said with Meta/Oculus/Holo: I will stan any VR product that can be used by the majority of women for 2 hrs without causing nausea.

    So far, most VR/AR headsets can't do that. It's expensive research to get that solved. And it doesn't make sense for a company to bet the farm if they can't do it.

    kellogh,
    @kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

    @mekkaokereke does the new Apple headset do that? Seems like they got a lot of details right, I’d be surprised if they missed that one

    hot take, and this really is hot: i like the apple vision headset. not sure i'd personally pay the price tag, but i could imagine it becoming an indispensable part of wfh or office settings. more than anything, i'm blown away by the huge effort that went into getting all the details right — a custom-built r1 chip, "invisible" headsets, new os... it's the first ar/vr device that actually seems like it's not just a demo

    kellogh,
    @kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

    @lobrien seems like it. They seem to have put in the technical work to make that feasible. But why stop at monitors when you can display things anywhere? Teams put up big TVs with ops dashboards. You could have hundreds of them when it doesn’t cost anything to add another. e.g. Leave gifs laying around the house for your spouse

    kellogh,
    @kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

    i can’t think of many companies where you can sink a truly staggering amount of resources into an idea with no clear business case. google, i suppose, but apple actually pulls it off most of the time

    kellogh,
    @kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

    @Emily_S if only they weren’t so secretive

    kellogh,
    @kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

    but what are the use cases? i'm not sure that's immediately obvious. i mean, i can think of tons of use cases, just none that rationalize the price tag. but i think i would've said the same thing about the iphone and ipad, so maybe apple is honestly just very good at being a visionary. no one is gong to catch up on this one for a very long time

    This year, Apple is zigging (headset) while the rest of the industry is zagging (AI). I was a little surprised that there weren’t some keeping-pace announcements (autocorrect enhancements not withstanding) for Siri.

    kellogh,
    @kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

    @steveshepard @lobrien I’ve been thinking a lot about this. My bet is that they did have something lined up, but it didn’t land in time. Which makes me think that even apple can’t land an LLM product that’s smooth enough to be called an “Apple product” in a short amount of time. Sure, it might be super fast to put together demos, but it probably takes a very long time to get all the details nailed out

    Biden had an opportunity to tell the nation that one party threatened to sabotage the nation’s economy and the other party was barely able to stop them, and that this kind of extortion must never happen again, and that one of his priorities going forward will be to eliminate the absurd and destructive debt limit.

    Instead, he hailed a “bipartisan” success. Why?

    imo this decade in tech is about use cases that are in the real world, not on a computer. let you interface with a computer without touching or looking at it. let’s you overlay compute on top of the real world. let’s you stand in someone else’s shoes and experience what they’re seeing. all of this needs a lot of work, but that’s where it’s going
