part of me wonders if I should've just done a degree in physics instead of computing (which was a shit course)

but then again when I was uni age I didn't have the patience for all the maths so I probably would've failed hard

kenogo,

@gsuberland There are lots of great physics book to teach yourself from that you can simply download from libgen :^) That's what I did for my physics degree. I rarely attended lectures and mostly taught myself with the lecturer's reading recommendations.

Many structured university reading lists can be found out in the open on the world wide web as a reference point.

If you haven't read the Feynman lectures yet, I highly recommend them.

kenogo,

@gsuberland Ah, fair enough. Well then sorry for the unhelpful suggestion. I hope someone else maybe knows a resource for that.

@mariusor @drewdevault If the old man with cancer doesn't want the public scrutiny, maybe he should step down from his position and stop publishing harmful opinions.

Yes, Stallman is influencing lots of people. He's nothing less than a meme and has a following that often concentrates in highly toxic communities within the broader hacker community.

I don't want rape culture to be a part of hacker culture. It won't go away by just ignoring the issue, and we need people like Drew who speak up.

Half of all plastics ever manufactured have been made in the last 15 years.

Production increased exponentially, from 2 million tons of plastics in 1950 to 448 million tons by 2015.

Production is expected to double by 2050.

Every year, about 8 million tons of plastic waste escapes into the oceans from coastal nations.

kenogo,

@breadandcircuses What about the plastic that has been used for a few years and then discarded? That seems to be missing from the infographic... Or "used once" is just a misleading label.

dusnm, to GNOME

unironically has one of the best paradigms.

What makes it great:

  • Keyboard shortcuts galore
  • Keyboard driven
  • Dynamic workspaces
  • Spotlight-esque shell behavior
  • Well organized and distraction free
  • LibAdwaita (controversial)

Bonus: Successfully killed the traditional, windows paradigm.

What could see some work:

  • Better accessibility
  • Sensible extensions that don't break the entire shell
kenogo,

@dusnm +1 It provides everything I need as a power user. But it's also extremely intuitive for my not very techy friends to use.

It makes me really sad not to use Gnome anymore because my paranoia makes me freak out when using anything other than and that sadly doesn't properly support Gnome (yet).

But... Everyone just has their own preferences. More than any individual desktop environment or window manager, I like the fact that we can choose :)

What good is a key card for the university's PC pool if they then keep locking the door with an additional physical key?!

This has happened to me several times now. I push myself to wake up at 5 and arrive at university at 7, only to be locked out until 9, when staff opens the doors.

Grrrrrr

Back on Gnome... I keep coming back. Some thoughts:

  • Qtile is cool, but requires too much work for my liking
  • KDE is cluttered, with too many options
  • Gnome works as expected every time.
  • Gnome is simple in comparison to KDE
  • Gnome does a lot of things right, including everything I need to not worry about the environment, but just focus on my work.
kenogo,

@dusnm I agree. I wish QubesOS would work with Gnome. I miss it so much

Some days more than others, I love not having cable TV.

    kenogo,

@ninavizz I can hardly imagine turning on the TV for some mild entertainment after a hard day, and being greeted by the orange man being given a platform on CNN just one day after being charged guilty as a sexual predator.

Spat out some cereal when my cable TV's morning programme showed me what happened over the pond while I slept.

Yes, this is hideously transphobic. It's also deliciously ignorant of Western fashion's commitment to bling, flamboyance, and showmanship. I welcome the ghosts of Gene Autrey, Porter Wagoner, Minnie Pearl, and Patsy Cline to steer this ship, accordingly.

Also: good luck ordering the Boss of Western workplace fashion, Temple Grandin, to dress more ladylike.

    kenogo,

@ninavizz Nitpick on the text: Sex isn't really biological either, but a socially constructed categorization of certain biological features.

The idea that gender is a social construct that somehow builds on a "less fluid" biological sex makes the categories of sex seem invariable and natural, which in turn can reaffirm gender stereotypes.

Okay, back to the main topic of the text: Fucking yikes! It's also so vague that it really opens the door for all kinds of arbitrary interpretations.
