I’m tempted to get a Windows 98 laptop simply because it’s the easiest way to play DOS games from the 80s and 90s without an emulator.

kiwiguy,
@kiwiguy@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet same here. I'm repairing and old dos laptop from the early 90s for this reason. Plus they give you a nostalgia buzz too.

I do not like being called exotic.
It is not a compliment.
I am not a fruit.
I am not an object.
I am a human being.

@msquebanh my 9 year was told by a teacher that she has "beutiful coffee coloured skin". Amazing kid asked the teacher not to talk about her appearances, then told us.

It was supposed to be compliment but do these people not hear themselves. The kids in the room a few shades darker than coffee sure hear the message.

Some years ago, I recorded two city pop albums to cassette. And I just found and re-discovered it. It has:

  • Side A: Tatsu Yamashita ~ Ride on Time
  • Side B: Yoko Obata ~ Pearl City

This was a good choice. I’ll be putting this on my Sony Walkman during my summer walks.

kiwiguy,
@kiwiguy@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet do they still work? I found my teenage mixtapes that were approx 20 years old but none of them worked, I was super bummed out.

A console is not a replacement for a GPU card.

A GPU card is a discrete component from a CPU. It has dedicated VRAM. You can remove it from your machine and replace it with a different GPU.

Meanwhile, modern consoles pretty much just have APUs. Don’t get me wrong, they have decent APUs. However, an APU in a console is not a GPU card replacement – because it is neither discrete nor replaceable.

@atomicpoet It's the boots theory for some I think (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boots_theory)

I recently got a series x. I really wanted a pc and GPU, but I don't own a PC so the start up costs are just too high.

It will probably be my last console hopefully.

If you’re going to buy retro video games in physical form, this video does a good job summing up pricing trends. Particular things I find interesting:

  • Atari 2600 cartridges are going up
  • NES cartridges are going down
  • The most expensive platform, by far, is the Neo Geo AES
  • The least expensive platform is the original Xbox
  • On average, games for SEGA platforms sell for less than games for Nintendo platforms
  • PS1 games are actually less expensive than PS2 games

Occasionally, I still buy physical games for consoles. However, I find myself preferring PC games to consoles.

@atomicpoet good video. I am a long term collector and this data matches PAL games too.

Ps3 and xbox 360 is my focus now.

I wouldn't start again though, emulation and PC ports are good enough now.

Mastodon culture is incredibly ugly right now. The relentless dogpiling and harassment is despicable. We were lead to believe that lack of quoted boosts would prevent this, but that hasn’t happened.

Nine months ago, I received death threats regarding a comment someone left on a post. Keep in mind, I didn’t say the offending remark—I was being punished because the offender replied to me.

Thankfully, I have thick skin and I’m not going to let certain entitled assholes rob me of my space on the Fediverse.

kiwiguy,

@atomicpoet I am functionally illiterate when it comes to computer stuff.

When I read the hysteria on mastodon yesterday I thought i was just missing the point.

I thought the fediverse was designed to share.

Maybe bluesky is the way and we do need walled gardens to force us to be nice.

My God, these Xbox fanboys are ridiculous. It’s clear they care more about “the brand” than actual games. Otherwise, they would be celebrating greater accessibility for more people.

What’s so funny about this is that these fanboys know that the only reason to buy an Xbox is for the exclusives. The hardware itself isn’t anything to sneeze about. And generally, it’s more expensive than just getting a PC.

kiwiguy,

@atomicpoet Microsoft likely realized there is more margin in selling Xbox owners a fresh copy of Windows every gen than hardware.

I’m trying this exotic dish called shepherd’s pie.

I don’t get it. This is a rectangle. A pie is round, it’s a pastry, and it has a crust.

It reminds me more of a lasagna but with mashed potatoes instead of pasta.

kiwiguy,
@kiwiguy@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet my god I love this place. Never would I ever think I'd hear somebody call Shepard's pie exotic. But there you go, my little bubble of assumed normalacy exposed.

Lasanga is better.

@OutofPrintArchive solid top ten even today. It always amazes me that it was obvious from day one that Doom was important.

C&C has lost relevance to pop culture lately, but would have been on many gamers top ten in 96.

Street fighter 2 and Mortal Combat changed the vibe of arcades overnight.

Not as stupidly bad as their Ridge Racer list, but still baffling on several levels.

From putting 2048 over everything besides WipEout 2097 and 3, which is just insane. To having Pure in the right spot somewhat when you remove 2048, but then having its HD port and than it’s port of that port all over the original.

I can’t help but shake my head.

kiwiguy,
@kiwiguy@mastodon.social avatar

@OutofPrintArchive ps3 HD with fury is the version I'm most likely to reach for when the itch needs scratching. Being ready to go on the PS3 is a big reason, but I do love it too.

kiwiguy,
@kiwiguy@mastodon.social avatar

@OutofPrintArchive thanks for the insights.

Do you happen to have any print reviews for Syndicate Wars by Bullfrog games? I am writing a review, and it feels like one of those games the internet has forgotten.

@Dave @sortofblue I'm personally not a fan of splitting small communities.

If mixing content types makes moderation too hard, then I would say that the above post belongs in the "politics" section of a newspaper so yeah.

@Axisential @Dave I have a natural talent for parallel parking and revel in it. I feel like a hero when traffic is backed up and I need to parallel park. No worries fam, I think to myself, I've got this one.

kiwiguy,
@kiwiguy@mastodon.social avatar

@Dave crazy story but this just happened after my message. A car pulled up to my bumper and wanted the park i was reversing into. The lady refused to move!

Bugger that, I had nowhere to be and can stay stubborn longer than her lack of shame can last.

Labour raises doubt about National's tax plan (www.newshub.co.nz)

National needs about $5 Billion in foreign property sales a year to reach its target. Prior to the 2018 ban, China (which likely can’t be taxed anyway due to FTA) made up 40% of an approximately $3.75 Billion in total sales. For Nationals numbers to work, the market would have to grown significantly, while leaving the vast...

kiwiguy,
@kiwiguy@mastodon.social avatar

@Rangelus we are now in post truth. It doesn't matter that the policy cannot be implemented. What's important to National is how the policy makes you feel.

kiwiguy,
@kiwiguy@mastodon.social avatar

@Ilovethebomb I guess choose your poison. One side underachieves to your expectations, the other never intends to try.

I cannot stress enough how enormous the barriers to entry for psychiatric care are in the US, especially for ADHD and autism. Every month I spend the better part of four days arguing and filling out paperwork and calling receptionists — and spending so much — so just my brain stays able to do those tasks and earn that money.

How are people supposed to work shifts and handle this? What if you're a parent? These meds cost nothing to produce. Why is it not cheaper for society to let me function?

kiwiguy,
@kiwiguy@mastodon.social avatar

@ryanhoulihan it is really hard. I'm from New Zealand and 3 months ago, the government changed the rules, and it was life changing.

My medication is now free, and I only need a prescription every 3 months. Such a small change has had an immense impact.

Before, I would have to remember to book a gp every month, then fill my script. At any point, the gp could decline it for further consults.

The meds were cheap ($10 per month), but with a monthly gp fee of $50, it hurt.

kiwiguy,
@kiwiguy@mastodon.social avatar

@Rangelus @Dave exactly my thoughts. Announce something nice that doesn't happen with so something unpopular that will.

Privatising electricity was unpopular until Key said all the money will be spent on public infrastructure and water projects. The dams never happened at scale and were never going to.

kiwiguy,
@kiwiguy@mastodon.social avatar

@eagleeyedtiger @Ilovethebomb my money's on GST rise. Also possible, that they announce but never implement a Microsoft tax and a proceeds of crime scheme.

kiwiguy,
@kiwiguy@mastodon.social avatar

@Ilovethebomb I see it as a crap sandwich, you put the gst (actually happening but unpopular) in-between two slices of vague but popular things that never actually evenuate.
