Holy moly! Somebody used AI/ML to review 126 papers for .

TRB has been trying to improve the review and publication process for a while, but it sounds like the time is now to really find solutions. They will be hiring an editor in chief for the TRR this year.

kklevine, to transit

It’s interesting (infuriating) that transit agencies are really beholden to a few vendors for software and hardware, and the UX sucks.

It’s heartening (depressing) to realize that they are in the same boat as libraries.

kklevine,

Imagine a world where libraries used an open source ILS and could just change vendors for support and management?

Would vendors be more responsive to user needs?

kklevine, to Trains

First print for and is done. I wonder what I’ll print today. Trains bring joy!

(Or misery if you’re a railroader.)

kklevine,

Here’s today’s print for and . I’m going to post some on the streets of Berkeley as well.

kklevine,

And another print I made to take to and . This one goes out to @metroshadow.

Buses are the best.

kklevine,

The last print I made for and . I will probably save some to give to local bike folks. (I really should coordinate with local advocates to have these out. @BikeEastBay @marcprecipice @ascentale let’s talk!)

Hope you get to ride your bike today!

A hand holding a bright green flyer with the text "I RODE MY BIKE TODAY!" printed in bold black letters. Background is blurred but appears to be a cluttered room with various items and signs.

I’m going to bring posters to hand out at and . What should they say? I’m trying to think of a good parking hot take. I’ll also make some bike ones. And a couple of these.

UC has given up carbon offsets and wants campuses to actually reduce their carbon footprint. Huh.

kklevine,

@jacqueline this looks rad!

I'm trying to pull together a panel about and and or for the 2024 meeting in January.

Any suggestions of people to talk to? I need to avoid a manel!

I don’t have to work today, so I went to the print shop and made a stack of these signs. I’ll be doing union work later this afternoon. It’s funny how I celebrate Labor Day by laboring for labor, but I also know I’m not alone.

Solidarity with all workers. Thank a union if you don’t have to work today.

Back on the blog train:
The madness of trusting the consultant class and the illusion of nice things.

Talking about why consultants don't work for us, the failures of open data, and a nod to Code for America.

This kid looks cooler on a bike than I do. Rolling into school with a sneer.

I am thinking about writing/blogging again. Like about how academic libraries are made in the image of colonialist enterprises, and it will take more work to rectify than LibGuides.

kklevine,

@Alon it's very much the same issues as museums (though not exactly). Academia was often a tool of colonialism through researching techniques, training bureaucrats, and exploiting other lands for research. Their libraries are an arm of that.

Academic libraries talk about democratizing access, but their power (and value) lies in exclusivity and gatekeeping to give their institutions and edge.

kklevine,

@bikepedantic I complain about summer camp a lot, but I really enjoy some of the commutes.

kklevine, to cycling

I strongly believe that I shouldn’t have to wear special reflective to be the perfect crash victim when biking. I refuse to do it. I have reflective strips on my bags and on my bike, and ride with lights.

Part of it is that when I die from a driver hitting me, I don’t want to look ridiculous. (I’m vain.)
Another big part of it is research (like my last repost) that shows drivers treat people in reflective gear as less human.

The vest won’t save my life.

kklevine,

Semi-related: I still want something like a Safety Pizza for my bike, but it’s a hotdog with mustard.

kklevine,

@djfiander I’m into it!

TIL that FTA headquarters has some transit bench seating in one of its common areas now.

kklevine,

@bikepedantic that’s fun!

Now that I'm here, I need to replicate my twitter experience. I know that handcraft mastodon, sjw mastodon, and fandom mastodon all exist. I haven't found angry urban cyclist mastodon yet though (particularly the cargo bike niche). I hope they're here somewhere!

kklevine,

@wills @oddtypeofdragon @burritojustice “angry cargobike rider” makes me feel attacked and seen. Hello!
