I wish to install to try it out over plain apt in Unstable, but the package has broken dependencies (libapt-pkg6.0t64 missing) :(

I successfully installed it in , though. It seems slower when doing large updates, but everyone tells me it's the better way to do so instead of apt. Thoughts?

Flashing Android devices is so much easier than it used to be. Blessed are the nerds who make this possible.

kzimmermann,
@kzimmermann@fosstodon.org avatar

@hakan_geijer I'm still gathering out courage to flash a custom ROM on my older devices out of my use. Sooo wanna liberate them the same way I do with older laptops!

kzimmermann,
@kzimmermann@fosstodon.org avatar

@hakan_geijer how do you suggest I start? PostmarketOS?

kzimmermann,
@kzimmermann@fosstodon.org avatar

@hakan_geijer I see, thanks for the suggestions! Sadly, I don't see my device in there to try 😓 dunno if it was too cheap or unusual to raise enough interest for someone to port (Galaxy A9)

Guess I'll have see in the dusted bin of really old ones if any of them are supported.

Funny enough, I decided to just say "fuck it" to my employer's wish and started to use Linux exclusively at work last week. Absolutely zero issues with it, and both my machine has been performing faster and I save much more battery along the day.

is more than ready for the corporate world.

@argv_minus_one
Indeed, it's the same department that didn't lock down the BIOS in the corporate laptop and allowed me to turn off secure boot.

Though granted, I use only the guest wifi when working on premises and changed my browsers' user agent to Windows 10, so maybe that's a small disguise.

kzimmermann,
@kzimmermann@fosstodon.org avatar

@Haydar this is the way! I did mention it in my onboarding ("hey, if you guys have Linux, I'm taking it!") but didn't enforce it. Perhaps I'll revisit this for future jobs!

@Zipkid like a boss! I should try this in future jobs now that I have a little seniority and more financial safety. Only the best jobs should be for taking!

456 packages now in the waiting list because of one unmet dependency in a compatibility package.

Is this what war of attrition feels like?

C'mon :(

kzimmermann,
@kzimmermann@fosstodon.org avatar

@tripplehelix unfortunately even the aptitude package can't be installed here, because of another dependency issue. I wonder if this is because the cache is "too up to date" or something? Hoping this isn't yet another systemd dependency...

aptitude : Depends: libapt-pkg6.0t64 (>= 1.9.0) but it is not installable

Man, aptitude brings me some memories of my early use of debian :D

kzimmermann,
@kzimmermann@fosstodon.org avatar

@tripplehelix thanks, this indeed "unclogged" the updates and I was able to pull them through. However, I don't feel very good about it - I don't know until when can this dependency be kept back until other parts of the system start complaining about it (the problems of a rolling release fashion). Still, I'll keep trying and get them through again. Thanks for the suggestion!

When you realize that, with the EOL'ing of Windows 10, a bunch of 2017-era computers will essentially be orphaned and owners will be looking to discard them...

... and you have a bootable USB stick with Linux :blobfox3cevil:

So today in the interest of saving up battery, I decided to use cpupower to throttle down this behemoth to 1.2GHz Maximum processing. Result? Instant warp to the past / RPi4 experience. Didn't feel much of a hit, though, because I'm so used to working with older machines, and my stack is light.

This should be a very neat trick for the ones who challenge themselves to that and don't have truly old machines lying around.

For some reason the firmware got moved out. I wonder why?

kzimmermann,
@kzimmermann@fosstodon.org avatar

@sertonix yup, this seems to be it. I was surprised that this was not announced (as far as I could search) in the release notes, and that this change even deleted the existing package that was installed in my system already as a result. Granted, it was installed as a dependency, and not explicitly, but still surprised me.

HexChat 2.16.2 — The Final Release

This will be the last release I make of HexChat. The project has largely been unmaintained for years now and nobody else stepped up to do that work.

@hund man, this hurts. was the first client I tried under Linux, way back when, as a newb, I'd hop on the ubuntu channel and ask my questions. I kept using it for a long time until I learned to set up irssi, and still would use it in some livecds.

So I'm not particularly "affected" by this, but it does have a special place in my heart.
