I talked to Instagram chief Adam Mosseri about Threads, a radical new social network where you can view more than 600 posts per day, totally free of charge https://www.platformer.news/p/meta-unspools-threads
@josephramoney@caseynewton why? I want to follow people from here. Otherwise i have to create a separate account just to view my friends and decent people who I want to follow
@GossiTheDog I want to use a single account to interact with people, there are a lot of decent people that I want to follow who are joining threads. They don’t care about the fediverse, they also don’t use twitter, and that’s fine. If my instance preemptively decides that I should be barred from communicating with them I’m gonna move.
You don't need to use the official Mastodon apps, they're not the best way to use Mastodon. The official apps only arrived last year, and they were intended as "Fisher Price My First Mastodon" things with a restricted set of features.
Third party apps have been around longer than official ones, and include way more features. You can sign in with the same account on all apps.
:android: On Android try Tusky, Fedilab, Megalodon, Tooot
:apple_inc: On iPhone/iPad, try Toot!, Ice Cubes, Ivory, Mona
@taylorlorenz I just realized the likes and boost counts are way more than what I can see. I only to get see counts from my server, I switched to another server and saw way more likes. Mastodon needs to sync the counts, people actually get way more engagement than they can see
@caseynewton lol I just discovered the likes and boosts are actually way bigger than what you see. On this post my server shows only likes form members who are on this server, I switched servers and saw way more likes on this post. Mastodon needs to sync all the likes counts, you are actually get get way more engagement than you think
@caseynewton the problem people think of it as a single website, it’s just one instance now. It’s going to be more or less like mastodon when people start spinning up their own bluesky instances
Y’all: I have been wrestling with kbin on the fedia.io instance, but I want to take a step back and give some perspective. Kbin is new, it’s growing crazy fast, and it really wasn’t in a place to support the migration from Reddit. Despite that, @ernest has been working his tail off knocking down issues and helpings instance admins.
Reddit certainly seems to be tripling down on their position and I think kbin is shaping up to be a worthy alternative. If you like kbin (on whatever instance you use it on) and want to see it grow, may I ask that you throw some money Ernest’s way? (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kbin)
I want to publicly thank Ernest for kbin and for his contributions to our growing fediverse community.
@caseynewton@andrewfelix with those products you completely understand the inner workings, but with AI we truly don’t understand how its behavior is emerges. Nobody designed transformers with its current use in mind. You come with a mathematical model, give it a spin and see what it behaves like. Developing such research level models in isolation is incredibly hard
Any #MastoAdmin have ideas how mastodon.social plans to scale? With the sign up focus on them for ease of onboarding - if it works - could see their numbers grow rapidly. I hope it forces them to find ways to optimize. Otherwise all their donation $$ will go to cloud costs and mobile development while I wish it was all focused on Mastodon development.
