I feel like Michael Keaton in Multiplicity except there’s only one of me and I just found a slice of pizza folded in my pocket.

@tantramar I recall loving that movie... but how does it hold up in 2024?

jpaskaruk, to python
@jpaskaruk@growers.social avatar

Anyone here use it?

It presents as which I love, only you write instead of that C-ish stuff it uses, and if I read correctly it's got a better underlying render engine. Only heard about it because someone did a reimplementation with it, and all things being equal I would definitely rather use that than devil-begotten, temple-beridden, snot-encrusted products.

Like jeez man some of us don't run windoze.

linux_mclinuxface,
@linux_mclinuxface@fosstodon.org avatar

@jpaskaruk wait, you think is like C? 😳

How did you draw this comparison? They’re light years apart linguistically aside from trivial operator syntax.

(I say this with no value judgement, I legitimately want to know)

linux_mclinuxface,
@linux_mclinuxface@fosstodon.org avatar

@jpaskaruk well, I have this theory about OpenSCAD: the materials to learn the language are… not great, so many folks don’t learn the language properly, get frustrated and move on.

I ran a workshop on OpenSCAD this last weekend and there were many attendees that had used it for years and had some definite holes in understanding some fundamentals.

@conservancy Super excited to hear that is coming back for next year!

I was looking at your FOSSY community track submission page (https://sfconservancy.org/fossy/community-tracks/) and the dates are for the previous event (e.g. Sunday March 19th 2023).

What's the 2024 due date?

Remember back in 2010 when a volcanic eruption in Iceland disrupted transatlantic flights?

Currently, there is no risk of this disruption.

However, I’ve often pondered what would happen if there was a major European tech conference with a heavy North American attendee profile (cough :KubeCon: cough) and a similar situation occurred again. Would everyone stay put? Fly the “wrong” direction to get home?

I don’t know why I think about such things.

@krisfreedain we went to Iceland a few months after the 2010 eruptions and there was a minor one while we were there. It was a little nerve wracking to think we could have been stuck. But yeah, it seems like a low likelihood.

    I saw a comment on a recent YouTube video about that said there was a lot of "toxic positivity" among FreeCAD users. Apparently, this prevents them from seeing glaring flaws when compared against other CAD

    I'll fully admit that FreeCAD isn't perfect, and some tasks aren't as convenient as in commercial software...for now. It's getting better thanks to efforts of a small group of unpaid developers

    It's a lot easier to improve software when you pay more people to spend the time doing it

    linux_mclinuxface,
    @linux_mclinuxface@fosstodon.org avatar

    @chrishuck that’s a weird way of using the term “toxic positivity” which I associate with self imposed emotional pressure to stay positive.

    I don’t discount that being unrealistic about a software project hides real problems, but the way the term is being used seems like therapy speak.

    Bought a thing; assembled it. An electronic component that shouldn’t have been dangling… was. Obvious solutions elude me. Missing part(s)? 🤷‍♂️

    Nothing in the manual. Manufacturer’s website:

    — no relevant info
    — support chat won’t load*
    — support email form won’t submit*
    — phone says “US” (I’m in 🇨🇦). Call it anyway; nice lady asks if I bought from them directly. No, via 🇨🇦 retailer. “You have to call them.”

    So many chances to do the right thing, all deftly avoided.

    @tantramar That sucks.

    FYI - I've found a lot of those support chats that won't open or email forms that won't submit are because of ad blockers. Turn them off? Magical working state. :|

    Or you have a borderline negligent company you're dealing with. Either way.
