Today is the day. I’m having a minor procedure on my foot in a couple of hours.

I’ll be fine, probably hopping around for a few days. The biggest consequence: I can’t wear shoes or socks for 2 weeks while I heal up.

I’m seriously not looking forward to having a cold foot for that long.

Flip side? My sock laundry will be cut by 50%!

I keep my filaments stored in vacuum sealed plastic bags. It is kind of a pain to deal with: a nuisance to open and reseal and storing them is far from neat or efficient.

I’m wondering if it is really worth the trouble except for a couple of really absorptive types. I often see photos where people store them in the open.

linux_mclinuxface,
@linux_mclinuxface@fosstodon.org avatar

@Ronguest I keep mine mostly out unless it’s a special or expensive filament I won’t get to for a while.

I live in a dry climate and have to actively humidify the air in my house, so high humidity is generally not a problem for me.

I can think of only a couple of times where humidity caused problems (PETG that had been out for months and a roll of TPU).

I’m actually a skeptic of moisture being a big problem in . The testing methods are dubious or only qualitative.

linux_mclinuxface,
@linux_mclinuxface@fosstodon.org avatar

@RichiH @Ronguest what’s the testing method for FDM then? Pre/post drying spool weight is hokum.

Due to travel and things I hadn’t done any for two weeks.

Anyone want to guess what I’m doing today?

(Aside from printing too fast and under extruding in the corners 😉)

@chrishuck no, but similar construction.

@tripplehelix buy a smart spec 4K and never hook it to the internet physically or with software.

https://valkey.io/blog/update/2024/04/valkey-7-2-5-out/

If you’re at #OpenSourceSummit, drop by the Valkey booth. We’ve got some killer swag: Slick water bottles and utensil sets (that include a fork 😉).

today’s retro rescue: a wang word processing workstation and its WPS-5 disk drive unit!

go ahead, make jokes - we’ve heard em all! 😅

surprisingly the drive unit weighs 5x as much as the entire computer. at least 75 lbs

linux_mclinuxface,
@linux_mclinuxface@fosstodon.org avatar

@vga256 my dad bought a whole pallet load of decommissioned ex-us military “computers” (really mostly word processors) for me when I was a kid.

He encouraged me to take them apart to understand how they worked.

One was a giant Wang VS45 (I think).

Somewhere there is a picture of me, around 8 years old, standing inside of it as I dismantled the thing.

It was a great experience, but I wince at this from a vintage computer perspective today.

So, had the weirdest Amazon problem this month. I emergency ordered a travel laptop charger for my trip to France because it was the only way to get one in time. It got delivered on time, but apparently the driver forgot to scan it, because it was in the Amazon system as "delivery failure".

For the last month (while I've been travelling) I've been getting email updates from Amazon regarding my "lost" package ...

linux_mclinuxface,
@linux_mclinuxface@fosstodon.org avatar

@fuzzychef I had this happen to me (before I worked at aws). It was an entire vacuum cleaner, so I had quite a bit of guilt and had zero need for two.

I went through many hoops and talked to a real person. They said just keep it. 🤷‍♂️

I sold it on Marketplace.

I placed some activated alumina dessicant in with my spool of Carbon Fiber Nylon a few hours ago, and yeah so far it is working far better than silica gel. We'll see where things are by the end of the weekend. I might finally be able to print.

Not shown, after taking the first photo, I barely had the Polybox open for a minute, when it shot up to 30% humidity. I imagine that recovered quicker than the other 4%.

Humidity sensor now showing 23% humidity.

Off to Austin for @TexasLinuxFest!

I’ve got two (very different) talks:

The first ever conference talk on and one about container Linux (featuring and several other great distros).

After Austin I fly directly to Seattle for where I’ll be at the Valkey booth Tuesday to Thursday next week.

If you’re around at either event let’s connect!

This is pretty rad.

PalmOS has a definite nostalgia for me. In the latter years (Trio/Cento era), it was extremely usable. Not sure I could daily drive it in 2024, but there were some fine application for the PalmOS.

Although if I dream a little bit: a similar project that does the WebOS experience faithful and I can run it atop PostmarkedOS. I would daily drive that today.

Super interesting video about and . A few tidbits:

  1. they're both the same size as Nashville or Raleigh but twice as dense.
  2. LRT in Edmonton is more riders than SF Muni or Max in Portland
  3. Calgary's LRT has higher ridership than SF's total system (Muni + Bart + CalTrain)

🤯

(I was a bit annoyed by the attitude of "Amazing, Alberta isn't as bad as we believed" over and over, but they were at least open minded)
