@malin linked me to their idea for calculating "faff" in games. It's a way to generate a numeric rating for how much work the player has to go through to accomplish a task. https://ttrpgs.com/post/faff/

I tackle this problem with flow charts. I find them to be an incredible way to expose hidden complexity. Most folks think D&D combat could be simplified, but isn't too bad, but then you see this. 1 rounds worth of decisions & actions for 1 player. Ignore the text. Focus on HOW MANY STEPS there are

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@masukomi
Do you have a link to the high rez version? This is crazy-big!

I'm just re-reading the faff metric article, and realising it could be substantially more clear.

...still not as bad as D&D combat apparently.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@masukomi @pteryx
If the faff-metric gets used, I'd love to see how people tackle different things.

Mostly it's just 'list steps, assign them numbers 1 to 3', so I think you could broadly do this with any system.

One could probably do a similar thing for how 'fine-grained' something is, but just listing factors in, and factors out.

I've been planning on putting together a YouTube series deep diving on various TTRPG game mechanics. The idea is to help game designers and GMs to learn from all the various ways that different games handle a given problem, like "stress" or facilitate extra player agency with things like "meta currencies".

Daggerheart feels like a jumping off point, for SO many of these, because so much of it seems "ok" but REALLY isn't if you have more mechanics understanding.

On a related note, I had trouble expressing how some systems were a total faff, while others were shorter. We won't see any proofs of 'mucking about', but I had a go at an estimator - something like 'Big O notation but for RPG faff'.

Looking back, the methodology and presentation needs work and editing, but there it is, in case that sounds useful:

One sobering thought is that I looked at the list of chat services and noticed that I don't actually use more than that.

I refuse to put it in my printer because it's ~1.5m from my head & its fans sound like a freaking jet engine.

I went down a 🐇 🕳 searching for 4020(ish) fans, & I didn't even find ones that lied about being notably quieter.

Looking for suggestions on how to make this quiet.

Maybe replace the dinky fans with a large, but slower spinning one?

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@masukomi
If the loud things are consistent enough, most people tune them out.

Road works are awful because they're intermittent. But fans are often 'silent' after a couple of hours.

I once thought that people who described nature as quiet were crazy, but now I think that consistent noises aren't really noise.

    There's something to be said for all the crypto stuff. Namely, if we could get a sensible default (proof of stake, simple app, ...) people could just send artists cash directly.

    I'm a big believer in the notion that people generally want to pay, they just don't want techno-faff.

    @adelgado @nixCraft I'm trying to parse this worldview.

    Do they think the number of CTOs equals the number of developers?

    Or is it like Highlander? Developers fight to the death until a last, bloodstained warrior adjusts their glasses and sends a company-wide email, informing the junior developers of their ascension?

    Do they think a CTO can usually do developer work well?

    This last statement may be the least plausible.

    anderseknert, to Bash
    @anderseknert@hachyderm.io avatar

    The only time I reach for scripts these days is when I need to call a few external commands in sequence, often with a few pipes in between them. IMHO there aren’t really that many other use cases left where some more competent scripting language isn’t a better choice. OTOH, why is that (evidently very common) use case still such a chore to do in basically any other language?

    malin,
    @malin@dice.camp avatar

    @anderseknert
    I suspect there's a lot of misuse and confusion with bash, because it's a shell...which you can script with.

    So if I need to check if a website's changed, or if a git remote has something, or need a quick way to search for torrents...bash!

    ...but then I use that command a lot, so why not a small script?

    ...but then it breaks, so I'll fix that one problem...

    and hey presto! I have 50 lines of script, which should have been python. I'll fix it later! Honest.

    ...when I get time.

    malin,
    @malin@dice.camp avatar

    @anderseknert
    Nah, it just feels like home. And it's the fastest language.

    > What's troubling the computer?

    htop

    > Is the router working?

    ping -c1 google.com

    > Tell me when the router's working.

    > watch -g !! && goBing.sh

    Wait, actually, I need to download those videos once the internet's working.

    > ^z; fg &&vidget.sh

    If you tell me my bash is ugly, I can only agree.

    But I can tell the computer what to do in 30 seconds. Measured in expression-time, bash is the fastest language.

    I think it mimics the same move from the GUI to the TUI. People look at me like I'm crazy and say "why can't you just CLICK the bloody button?".

    30 minutes later, I'm still typing commands and pulling up man pages, and they've decided I 'want make life difficult'.

    Fast-forward a few months, and a voice tells me when it's about to rain, my e-mails work offline, and I've published books that a large corporation would struggle to match.

    Can we please just stop doing DST? I honestly don't care which "time" ("summer" or "winter") becomes the standard, as long as we stop the silly ritual of moving the clocks twice a year for no benefit at all.

    malin,
    @malin@dice.camp avatar

    @rysiek We could do one better, and go full-GMT.

    We'd all start the day at different times, but we already wake at the hour of '7' or '8', so it's not like we lose out on waking up at 'the first hour' (which would make more sense).

    Interesting read. I wonder what the result was.

    "Nenad Stojkovic" isn't a Serbian name. It should be "ненад стојковић" or "Nenad Stojković".

    That said, Serbian law demands people allow the use of their non-diacritics name (aka 'haircut' name).

    Whether Serbian law impacts on US law, sent to Canada...I guess this case must be the first case to lay precedent.
