Anyway I am grateful for the Fediverse but also seriously side-eyeing some folks.

I am considering Substack but from what I understand, it's run by a fascist too.

Then again, I think most social media platforms of any note are. No ethical consumption under capitalism and all that.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@micahdraws social median services can be owned by people with bad politics. pleroma and the ls command are just tools, without subscription or payment.

trashheap, to random

I can't really stand that the media likes to act like there are rational legal philosophies at play in these cases.

And not that we have a panel of justices with no intellectual honesty or integrity, who just craft interpretations to fit the outcomes they have already decided they want.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@trashheap I often muse what a real-politik new site would sound like. Something with the same facts presented, but the underlying assumption that people who have spent their lives amassing power are motivated by amassing more power.

Corporate espionage?

Nope! "Hackers".

There's a joke in Kindergarten Cop that has really not aged well...

Actual Dialog:

Mom: (concerned) Well, it seems that he's become obsessed with playing with dolls. It's weird.

Teacher: I think I can help you with that. He uses the dolls to look up girls' skirts. I caught him doing it yesterday.

Mom: Oh, well that's a relief.

So, basically it's:

Mom: I'm worried my son is gay.

Teacher: Nope, he's straight, just a maladjusted creeper with consent issues.

Mom: Oh, what a relief.

The fuck?

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@LouisIngenthron Something like this comes up with half the old movies you rewatch. Short Circuit, One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing, basically half my childhood has these little moments that take on whole new flavours in retrospect.

I wonder which films made now will suffer in the same way.

Everyone I know now sends 5 messages, prompting 5 beep notification noises, because they cannot use the newline character.

I just bought myself an external keyboard and realized I forgot about something very, very important:

Keyboards don't have trackpoints.

So now I have to go through the eternal torment of reaching for my mouse whenever I want to navigate any GUI apps. That, or spam tab a million times.

The moral of the story is that you should never use any GUI apps and instead become a true Linux user who does literally everything from the command line.

ps: when is Mastodon gonna support vim motions?

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@runarcn vim-mode for each site is not the Unix way.

If you use Qutebrowser, you can navigate 90% of Mastodon from the keyboard, and j/k work on every page.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@runarcn It does not.

It has an ad-blocker built-in, and support greasemonkey scripts instead of add-ons.

It also handles all the configs in python, so small changes are super easy to do on the fly.

There's my config if you're looking for ideas:

Whatever else happens about Facebook's incursion, I hate that it's already torn so much apart — or at least aggravated so many pre-exsting divisions.

At some level it was inevitable. On corporate social media, giant companies tell you how safe you get to be. On small instances, community admins get to decide for you. Even on your own instance, your friends that you interact with decide.

As a society, we suck at agency, and FB is good at exploiting that.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@xgranade I take a different lesson here - that many decisions cannot be taken alone.

We have to listen to music in a club together, and have a shared language.

Jerry, to kbin
@Jerry@hear-me.social avatar

Did you know you can add a magazine to a kbin server that you don't have an account on, that you are not logged into, that you never logged into, that is locally listed on a different kbin server, whether you have an account there or not as well?

I created a magazine on my server, feddit.online, called "feddit".

I went to geddit.buzz and looked at their magazine list. It did not have my magazine. I never logged into geddit.buzz nor ever had an account.

I clicked on the global search icon at the top on geddit.buzz and searched for <at>feddit<at>feddit.online.

The magazine came up and is now on the magazine list for geddit.buzz, which they can't delete.

So, you can force any other KBIN server to list a magazine that is on any other KBIN or Lemmy server.

Defect or feature?

I can think of how this can be abused.

I hate advertisements so much.
This is the main reason I don't have cable. I couldn't wrap my brain around the concept of paying for content full of ads.

I paid for youTube premium but I'm about to give up on that too since you may skip the inserted ads there are still all of the sponsors. And I can't be mad at creators for wanting to make some money but I really need to escape these ads.

Because ads work -- most people assume they don't but they do. They change you.

@Enfors Cheers!

Unsure what's happening with URLs.
'https://lemmy.world/c/rpg@lemmy.ml' works fine, but 'https://lemmy.world/c/rpgdesign@lemm.ee' returns 404. Perhaps lemmy.world just isn't federating properly with lemm.ee?

The admins just let porn on lemmy.world, so there might be defederation happening, as the front page has become a little poluted.

atomicpoet, to internet

Yet another question people are asking me: "How can I, a common person, help hasten the demise of through ?"

Again, I want to re-emphasize this. is not an all-purpose tool. It's useful as a hammer. But in this scenario, we don't just need a hammer. We need drills, pliers, saws, and blowtorches.

That said, we must protect communities that choose to defederate from Meta. Which means that if those servers don't want to receive messages from any Meta-owned services, we must not only be respectful of that, we should make damn sure that those servers are quarantined from Meta. So much of the success of fighting Meta will require safe spaces from Meta.

The next thing we need is lots and lots of nodes. Currently, we only have ~25,000 nodes on the Fediverse but we need more. Preferably, these nodes should be small, agile, and well-moderated. If you have the finances and/or skill to run a node, it's important that you do so. To compete with Meta, we need to build scale -- and the easiest way to build scale is by adding more nodes to the Fediverse.

What will also be key is lobby servers. These will be servers specifically set up for migrants from Meta-owned services to help onboard them towards the rest of the Fediverse. To run such a lobby server, they need to be welcoming, moderated well, and free of the elitists and gatekeepers that poison so much of the Fediverse currently.

How to get people from Meta to try out the rest of the Fediverse? We need people willing to be ambassadors on who are ready and willing to evangelize the rest of the Fediverse. Folks like @tchambers are very good at this on Twitter, and I have no doubt that we can do the same with P92. Except this time we'll have the benefit of federation already happening 😉

Now if there's one thing I've learned about the growth of the Fediverse it's that bad corporate decisions pay dividends. We've already experienced waves of migration from Tumblr, Twitter, and Reddit. And I have no doubt that it's only a matter of time before Meta makes another corporate mistake -- as they tend to do.

In which case, we need to strike fast. When another Cambridge Analytica happens, we need to remind everyone on Meta about the lobby servers that are on standby, and ready to take them on. Unlike previous migrations, let's not be unprepared for this. Let's be especially prepared since Meta plans to join the Fediverse.

Finally, we need more devs. Specifically, we need devs willing to build innovative server and client software that takes aim at Meta. And to do that, we need to support the devs that currently exist -- show evergreen devs pondering whether they should invest here that we, as a community, are appreciative of our current devs.

If you like , , , , etc., it's important that you open up your hearts as well as your wallets and fund the next stage of Fediverse development.

This will take a lot of work. But if you want to fight Meta, challenge their dominance of social media, this is what must be done.

Personally, I'm hyped about the future of the Fediverse -- regardless of whether Meta eventually lives to tell the tale.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@darnell Are you sure?

The Fediverse has near-perfect moderation, as anyone unhappy with the mods can go elsewhere.

The Fediverse managed to move together to defederate from Gab and other bad instances.

Meanwhile, Facebook was heavily implicated in a genocide, and took three years to do anything about it.

Cambridge Analytica used Facebook data to interfere in multiple countries.

I think the Fediverse has more to worry about than Facebook.

so, the reddit API protest has taken a different direction, now people are uploading gigabtyes of videos to reddit which are just noise. i cannot stress this enough, do NOT run the command ffmpeg -filter_complex "nullsrc=s=1920x1080,geq=random(1)*255:128:128[vout]" -map "[vout]" -t 46 -c:v libx264 out.mp4 in order to generate one of these large video files then upload them en masse in order to slow down their servers, that totally will not help with the protest

@mjdxp you can't do this in /r/pics as they've banned all images except John Oliver looking sexy.
