RIP the man who was the absolute incarnation of XKCD's "one random dude holding up the entire internet". You may never have heard of David Mills, but your entire goddamn world depends on what he did.

You realize how good NTP is when the proxy settings at work block it while your system clock is skewed.

Little bits of the system fall apart in subtle ways. Absolute nightmare.

Adblockers are legal, German courts ruled. Their argument: users not only have the right to receive information but also to refuse it.
That sounds about right. It'd be positively dystopian if companies can claim the right to force-feed information. A win for internet user freedom :).
One of the downsides of the ruling is that a company can exclude users with an activated adblocker from accessing its website.
@fsfe wrote an interesting article about the case

Adblocking should be illegal, along with people who don't finish books.

If an author sells you a book, they have the right to know you read all of it, to the end.

I'm going to remind everyone that not reading everything should be illegal, starting with an email campaign, with links to 4 hour videos where I explain my theories.

If people don't read all of my emails and watch the videos till the end, I'm going to sue.

This is terrifying. Police in the UK will be given the power to arrest people if they are wearing face coverings at specific demonstrations, the Home Office has said. Protesters who wear masks could face arrest, up to a month in jail, and a £1,000 fine.

Side note: this makes studying the language a 4-dimensional nightmare (or 'puzzle').

> What's this word?

> Well in timeline 1, it went from East to West, then looped back, so it ends in '-rie', but since Tolkien updated to timeline 4, then it should have gone South and gone North with the Nolder in the fourth age, making it the '-ntie' ending. However, evidence from recent publications...

Just had one of those AHA! moments: we should build houses for the homeless, of course we should, that's obvious. But we build them at FIVE HUNDRED YEAR QUALITY. That is to say, designed so that, with minimal maintenance, they will be good homes for 500 years. Yes, obviously that makes them a bit more expensive in the short term. But it means we develop a building industry with the skills to build 500 year homes. But more...

It's been a minute; let's do this again:

If you are a Tabletop RPG nerd and have less than, say, 500 followers (or think you have less than 500 that are actually active):

  1. Write a post to introduce yourself and your particular nerdery, if you haven't already got one pinned.

  2. Reply in the comments with a link to or copy of that post.

  3. Share, check back to find people you want to follow, all that.

I'm seeing a lot of neat
art resources on itch.io, with unclear licences.

  • "Do what you want, just give proper credit"

Okay so...is that CC-BY 4.0? It sounds like it, but if I can't use it with a 'whatever' licence.

  • "CC-BY 4.0"? Cool!
  • "And do not use this for bad things"

...I appreciate the sentiment, but again, I can't use this without a detailed list of what the artist considers bad things, which means I can't use it.

This is Liebnitzian thinking.

If improving the simulation always means more difficulty, then that means the rulesets are all perfectly efficient.

However, if the rulesets are not perfectly efficient, then some of them could be made easier to learn, while still being as good or better at simulation and distinctions.

Just discovered Yuri Knorozov and Aspid, the man and cat who, together, deciphered South American languages, without leaving Russia.

Yuri insisted on having Aspid credited in journals, and insisted on him being present in pictures.

South Americans built statues of them.

Also I found this by Pandadrake on Deviant art and it's perfection.

I asked an older family member about any old Scottish myths she knew. She told me about what an older person had told her when she was younger.

Then she stopped and said she's only heard this from that one person, and doesn't know if it's 'real folklore'. But I figure if a story's been past down through two Scottish women, over at least a century, that makes it a 'real legend' by any measure.

Strange weather has been hitting my old village in Scotland (can't imagine why the weather has been so strange of late...) and a road went down.

Now the other road's bridge has gone, so the peninsula is now an island. Boats are coming in with supplies.

Anyway, my family (who clearly have their priorities in order) want to know what illegal things they should get up to during this brief period of self-governance.

My only productivity hacks for 2024:

  1. On the last day of each month, archive every email in your inbox, whether you’ve replied to it or not. If it’s important, it’ll find its way back. If it’s not, you’re not missing anything.

  2. Buy and use a paper planner. Something analogue that you have to put mindful work into maintaining. No notifications. No distractions. Just good old fashioned lists and dates.

  3. Embrace audiobooks. They’re a game changer.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@Daojoan I tried this but I still can't crack my neighbour's WiFi. These hacking tips are not productive.

A fascinating part of German is that the standard approach to dealing with unruly ghosts and evil spirits is to dump and bind them to a remote place where they can't bother the living.

Which brings me to a idea: What if that crumbling ruin with the treasure-filled dungeon has been used as the dumping ground for such spirits from the nearby villages for the last few centuries?

Obviously, the inhabitants won't be keen on having living visitors. Nevertheless, they might have useful information - and be open to deals with dungeon-delvers who are willing to do favors for them...

"Sorry guys, I dropped that magic ring in the village's hole"

> well go and get it out!

"Yea, nah, that's where they dump all the acidic oozes, nockers, svarts, and ghouls that attack the village"

> like, where they dump the bodies?

"Yea, nah..."

Trying to make an easy visual about how to roll stats X + Y against an opponent, and suddenly the system looks more difficult that when just writing it.

Better infographics may be required.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@ericmpaq
It's the average of 2D6. The theory is:

Player rolls 1D6 + Stats, and GM rolls 1D6 + Stat, and compare results.

Or can make the player roll both dice, but use 1D6 - 1D6 against Target Number 0 (that's the same system, rephrased).

Or we can have the player roll 1D6 + 1D6 against TN 7.

(This is also the same system as above, we're just making the player roll the dice)

It should probably be updated to include a MAC address changer, or aeroplane mode.
