I like how @Framasoft presents social media in their footer: the corporate networks are there, with an explanation and an invitation to join Mastodon instead

In it Idiscovered @mario_angst_sci 's organisation of a "conference satellite" in Zürich to avoid flying to Australia, a nice example of what we can do to avoid flying to distant conferences.

Academic life tip: if you leave a browser tab open long enough on a preprint you plan to read, it becomes a journal article you plan to read.

I was happy with the results of my exam of Molecular evolution (BSc 3rd yr), which indicated that most students understood the material and that the pedagogical aims were met.
I have now received a statistical evaluation of the exam which indicates that I fail to sufficiently discriminate students. I feel that the intention of providing feedback on our exams is good, but I disagree with the idea that a good exam is a discriminatory exam.

How is it being an academic who tries not to fly for work working in evolutionary biology and bioinformatics in central Europe this year?
@officialSMBE, (which includes @eseb), and in N. America.
and in Finland, which can be reached from Switzerland without flying, but it takes 2 days each way.
We can do better! We need conference planning to take into account travel, and avoid peripheral locations.

Any other workspace managers who've been getting requests to confirm members to other workspaces? To be clear, it's not only workspaces I don't manage, but which I'm not a member of and have never interacted with. It's happened to me twice in the last weeks.

Just read @pluralistic 's commentary Don't be evil. Nothing new if you've been following him, but an excellent summary to have in mind and share with friends, family, and colleagues https://locusmag.com/2023/11/commentary-by-cory-doctorow-dont-be-evil/

As an aside, it's impressive to see the success of the concept of , which was one of the first things (maybe the first?) I learned on Mastodon, as it was posted here by @pluralistic shortly into the mass migration from blue bird. I certainly don't feel like I missed out on the action being here 😉.

I regularly see posts on mask wearing in planes. I'm happy that you're paying attention to health and wearning a mask. But I'm a bit suprised to see so many posts which are framed like taking the plane is an ordinary, frequent, occurrence. Covid is real, but so is climate change.

Yesterday it was one year that I joined Mastodon, thanks in great part to the excellent initiative of @alxsim in creating in a timely manner.
My activity on Twitter had been slowing down, and I've been really happy of the new place and pace I've found here. At the same time I regret what we lost with science Twitter, and I'm afraid we'll never get back anywhere.

marcrr,
@marcrr@ecoevo.social avatar

I'm sad to see how much science discource is still on Twitter, and how it is still the main source for science news stories. Yet I'm hopeful we can build something durable here, because the openness allows experimentation and innovation, in addition to being the right thing to do.
