Fucking Christ the @protocol is the most obtuse crock of shit I've ever looked at. It is complex solely for the sake of being complex and still suffers from all of the same problems as Mastodon.

Your server goes down? Sorry, all of your followers are lost. Account portability is no better than Mastodon. 'DIDs' serve literally no purpose. And none of the API code that Bluesky uses in their own app validates ANY of the crypto they're doing on the server. NONE OF IT.

@sam Not competent to comment on any of this, but have seen a lot of tech vaporware schemes over the years, and do have a question.

Can you tell if Bluesky is actually utilizing the @protocol for the single instance platform they currently have in operation? Could this all be inoperable spaghetti code and marketing puffery with a stripped down Twitter clone operating in the background? Just curious...

    @supernovae Thanks Universeodon! Looked hard, but could not find the post on the Torpenhow Hill tautology for a post earlier today. Then saw this post about how you have full text search implemented, so did a search for "Torpenhow" using partner account Rubicon @rubicon 's universeodon.com account, and presto! boom! 💥 found 𝕯𝖎𝖒𝖎 @dimi 's post! https://techforgood.social/@dimi/110349031359909945

    Check out some of the cool new moderation features coming out of Bluesky. First, posts are automatically tagged via AI and you can choose to hide, warn, or show them.

    You can mute and block accounts, but you can also create your own mute lists (lists of accounts that you mute), and you can subscribe to other people's mute lists if you trust their judgement.

    Mute Lists settings. "You can subscribe to mute lists to automatically mute all of the users they include. Mute lists are public but your subscription to a mute list is private."

    mastodonmigration,
    @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

    @micahflee Good to know that you can get their "AI" to find Explicit Sexual Images, Violent/Bloody and Political Hate Groups for you. That should be a very useful feature.

    mastodonmigration,
    @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

    @Ursalzona @micahflee Here's what you can do to get their "AI" to find Explicit Sexual Images and Violent/Bloody for you. Set the "Enable Adult Content to "Warn" you on these two and turn it to "Hide" for the others. Then simply scan your feed for all warned content and feast on a smorgasbord of filth and depravity.

    mastodonmigration,
    @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

    @Ursalzona @micahflee LOL... Twisted Evil masquerading as "Free Speech Absolutism".

    Seems you can even export these Explicit Sexual Content and Violent/Bloody lists and share them with your twisted evil friends.

    Don't listen to anyone who says "likes don't matter" on here.

    Yes, it's true that there's no algorithm for them to feed.

    But letting people you know that you like what they're sharing, that you agree with them, that they're not just shouting into an empty abyss? That matters.

    So, this is kind of cool. You might use the "# Explore" button to see recent popular posts people are boosting and liking. This shows posts from all over the Fediverse that are "gaining traction" on YOUR server.

    But you can also see which posts are popular among people on OTHER servers by editing the URL. For instance:

    https://federate.social/explore
    https://mastodon.social/explore
    https://newsie.social/explore
    https://infosec.exchange/explore
    https://masto.ai/explore

    Mastodon may not be perfect, but it sure has gotten pretty awesome lately. This week the community boosted a discourse on the tautological placename etymology "Torpenhow Hill", which actually translates to "hill, hill, hill, hill", and a one billion year time lapse animation of two galaxies colliding. We registered our collective outrage at CNN, featured amazing artwork and photography, and recognized scientist Grace Hopper, inventor of the first compiler. What's not to love!

    Galactic collisions result in a billion-year gravitational dance, as shown in this captivating supercomputer simulation. The simulation depicts the collision of two spiral galaxies and is complemented by actual images of galactic collisions at various stages captured by Hubble.

    @Teri_Kanefield Your caution and skepticism is warranted. The real mystery here is how Jack Dorsey has suckered everyone into believing that he has a "distributed" "open" system, when the current system is neither. Back in the day we would have called it "vaporware", but if Trump proved one thing, it's that we are living in a particularly credulous, gullible time.

    mastodonmigration, (edited ) to internet
    @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

    Vaporware: Term coined in the 1980s for computer-related products or capabilities that are widely advertised but have not and may never become available. Like, for example, an open distributed social media network platform that is neither open nor distributed.

    mastodonmigration,
    @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

    @alastor8472 People are certainly free to make their own decisions, but they should be informed decisions. If what you are referring to are the recent posts about the Bluesky content licensing terms that effectively give them co-ownership of your content, or this post about the deceptive marketing tactics they are employing, these are things that people should be aware of and consider when making their choices.

    mastodonmigration, (edited )
    @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

    @TheShoeYes There is no doubt that will be a competitor to Mastodon, but it is also true that they are not, and may never be, an open distributed system.

    Notice...

    You may have seen the announcement that mastodon.social is now "upgrading to a nightly build". This means that it is regularly releasing the latest and greatest version.

    And you may be wondering if this is unique, or something special that only Eugen can do? The answer is no, the same version is available for all instances to upgrade to as frequently as they want.

    Lot's of improvements rolling out. Exciting times.

    In the synthetic age, owning your own namespace on a server hosted in a data protecting territory becomes fundamental.

    mastodonmigration,
    @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

    @profcarroll What does this mean? 🤔

    mastodonmigration,
    @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

    @profcarroll Got it. Your content is more protected from scraping if it is on an EU based server. And, it's better if you own the domain.

    Does having your Mastodon user name tied to a verification domain (eg. personal website) help?

    BTW love the term "synthetic age".

    bsky invite codes transact at insanely inflated market prices atm. sit tight. it’s not worth it. dial down any fomo. just wait until they have to contend with open servers like we do.

    mastodonmigration,
    @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

    @profcarroll It is a lot easier to sell capabilities that you do not have than those which you actually do have. Don't hold your breath waiting for the "distributed" "open" Bluesky vaporware.
