Fucking Christ the @protocol is the most obtuse crock of shit I've ever looked at. It is complex solely for the sake of being complex and still suffers from all of the same problems as Mastodon.

Your server goes down? Sorry, all of your followers are lost. Account portability is no better than Mastodon. 'DIDs' serve literally no purpose. And none of the API code that Bluesky uses in their own app validates ANY of the crypto they're doing on the server. NONE OF IT.

mastodonmigration, (edited )
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@sam Not competent to comment on any of this, but have seen a lot of tech vaporware schemes over the years, and do have a question.

Can you tell if Bluesky is actually utilizing the @protocol for the single instance platform they currently have in operation? Could this all be inoperable spaghetti code and marketing puffery with a stripped down Twitter clone operating in the background? Just curious...

Vaporware: Term coined in the 1980s for computer-related products or capabilities that are widely advertised but have not and may never become available. Like, for example, an open distributed social media network platform that is neither open nor distributed.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@TheShoeYes Denial of what?

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@alastor8472 People are certainly free to make their own decisions, but they should be informed decisions. If what you are referring to are the recent posts about the Bluesky content licensing terms that effectively give them co-ownership of your content, or this post about the deceptive marketing tactics they are employing, these are things that people should be aware of and consider when making their choices.

mastodonmigration, (edited )
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@TheShoeYes There is no doubt that will be a competitor to Mastodon, but it is also true that they are not, and may never be, an open distributed system.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@alastor8472 And your point that we need to keep working on the progressive growth of Mastodon is well taken and much appreciated. Thank you for this comment.

bsky invite codes transact at insanely inflated market prices atm. sit tight. it’s not worth it. dial down any fomo. just wait until they have to contend with open servers like we do.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@profcarroll It is a lot easier to sell capabilities that you do not have than those which you actually do have. Don't hold your breath waiting for the "distributed" "open" Bluesky vaporware.

In the synthetic age, owning your own namespace on a server hosted in a data protecting territory becomes fundamental.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@profcarroll What does this mean? 🤔

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@profcarroll Got it. Your content is more protected from scraping if it is on an EU based server. And, it's better if you own the domain.

Does having your Mastodon user name tied to a verification domain (eg. personal website) help?

BTW love the term "synthetic age".

Notice...

You may have seen the announcement that mastodon.social is now "upgrading to a nightly build". This means that it is regularly releasing the latest and greatest version.

And you may be wondering if this is unique, or something special that only Eugen can do? The answer is no, the same version is available for all instances to upgrade to as frequently as they want.

Lot's of improvements rolling out. Exciting times.

    @Teri_Kanefield Your caution and skepticism is warranted. The real mystery here is how Jack Dorsey has suckered everyone into believing that he has a "distributed" "open" system, when the current system is neither. Back in the day we would have called it "vaporware", but if Trump proved one thing, it's that we are living in a particularly credulous, gullible time.

    "But first, it’s helpful to think about the purpose the utopian hallucinations about AI are serving. What work are these benevolent stories doing in the culture as we encounter these strange new tools? Here is one hypothesis: they are the powerful and enticing cover stories for what may turn out to be the largest and most consequential theft in human history. Because what we are witnessing is the wealthiest companies in history (Microsoft, Apple, Google, Meta, Amazon …) unilaterally seizing the sum total of human knowledge that exists in digital, scrapable form and walling it off inside proprietary products, many of which will take direct aim at the humans whose lifetime of labor trained the machines without giving permission or consent."

    @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

    @luciedigitalni Oh, but people did consent when they agreed to terms of service granting licenses of their content to these companies. Some people have been raising the issue that giving up licenses to your content will be problematic, but they were shouted down by the "don't worry about, just lawyer stuff, everyone does it" crowd. And now those chickens are coming home to roost.

    mastodonmigration,
    @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

    @StryderNotavi @luciedigitalni Sure, there is a lot of content theft. It will be interesting to see how this is adjudicated. Seems like the wild west.

    mastodonmigration,
    @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

    @luciedigitalni @StryderNotavi Agree it is a great point, and did not mean to imply that all all the content they are using to train their algorithms is licensed. However, just wanted to point out that when you grant Facebook or Google a license to your content for the purposes of operating their service and they blend these capabilities into their products, you don't have a leg to stand on. You gave it away.

    mastodonmigration,
    @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

    @StryderNotavi @luciedigitalni They assert both that you own it and are responsible for not infringing and that you have given them a license.

    Tech media seems to like the new sign up process...

    MakeUseOf: How to Sign Up for a Mastodon Account - Signing up for a Mastodon account has never been easier >>> https://www.makeuseof.com/how-to-sign-up-mastodon-account/

    "Thankfully, Mastodon has made things simpler... users can now sign up for an account and join a Mastodon-operated server by default."

    "You no longer need to find a specific instance to join Mastodon (although you can still find and join one later)."

    mastodonmigration, (edited )
    @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

    @FinchHaven This account is not cheering anything. @mastodonmigration posts links to Mastodon related news stories and sometimes comments on them. In this case, it is worth noting that tech media has picked up the story. It is certainly the case that the Mastodon sign-up process has been a source of criticism for being "too complicated." If that perception is changing, that is a good thing, while the concentration of users on mastodon.social is controversial.

    Thanks for all the support.

    Evidently about 30 servers of wing nuts decided to descend and try to scare me.

    I've raised kids. Nothing scares me.

    What is surprising is how coordinated they are. So far they've all come from servers on this list: https://seirdy.one/pb/FediNuke.txt

    Over the last few hours Mastodon treasure @Teri_Kanefield has been the victim of very vulgar harassment on her server law-and-politics.online.

    Mastodon lets users create their own instances, but you need to block bad instances.

    Fortunately, Mastodon provides support for this:

    New MastoAdmin Guide To Banning Servers >>> https://writer.oliphant.social/oliphant/new-mastoadmin-ban-list-fediblock

    Oliphant.Social Mastodon Blocklists >>> https://writer.oliphant.social/oliphant/the-oliphant-social-blocklist

    Other recommendations, specific instructions?

    Pete @Pete: "You won’t be able to stay ahead of the garbage if you try to block domain by domain. You want an automated solution that leverages the collective moderation efforts of the Fediverse. I use FediBlockHole (https://pypi.org/project/fediblockhole/) and sync with the oliphant unified tier 2 blocklist (https://codeberg.org/oliphant/blocklists). Set it up to run daily in cron and you’ll see an immediate improvement. Follow @fediblock who does a great job curating, de-duping and boosting "
