What if the macOS dock and its icons were more dynamic and fluid?

Made a little demo that shows message previews, live music, download progress, and more.

Pretty happy with how this turned out!

@janum If i ever used my dock i would absolutely love this. Alas, i keep it hidden and try and avoid ever interacting with it. I'm not the target audience, but I shall admire it from afar. :D

Great piece on Slate about the effort to re-brand conversion therapy as "exploratory". With every rebrand the goals and the dangers of trying to gaslight people out of their innate identities remains the same.

In this era of tech layoffs, I've streamlined my resume to build from a Markdown file and be easily updateable/shareable. https://brettterpstra.info is generated from https://brettterpstra.info/BrettTerpstraResume.txt with a single Howzit command, easy to edit, easy to deploy. And @marked makes it easy to generate a PDF for attaching… Now I just hope I don't have to use it for a while.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@ttscoff @marked 🤔 I do something similar, but i go from md->html->headless chrome ->pdf (all via command line)

not sure if that's easier than using marked or not, but it gets me something that looks identical to the web page.

I've spent the past decade or so ghostwriting blogs and content pages for law firms. It's steady if largely uninteresting work. But I am looking to transition out of it over the next year or so.

There are many reasons. One is that the decaying political situation in a number of U.S. states has made writing about the law in general a joyless slog. But I've also reached the limit of what I can do in this field.

So if anyone knows where a guy who can write thousands of words of reasonably intelligent-sounding text per day can find some work outside of the legal profession, feel free to let me know. 😀

@ChronRevisited my wife used to [write] for a lawyer, then did a whole bunch of random content web content writing and ghost writing books. Eventually got into tech writing and has enjoyed its challenges, and now coding…

in the future, media will portray teenage hackers as kids who get into battles of wits with LLMs. Using quick thinking and gotchas they best the machine and bypass security controls.

This is both wrong in how it anthropomorphizes LLMs, but also right in the understanding that these products have such flimsy security it can be bypassed by 15 year olds with creative writing.

I was working on an outline of a story for this year's AM 800 - WRTH, which is my ghost story and paranormal podcast series I do in October. I had a few ideas, laid out, written down, and getting into some semblance of an arrangement.

And then an idea popped into my head that was almost fully formed. The beats I'd have to hit, the pacing, the five episodes for the five weeks in October. It was kinda all just... there. I even had a vision of what I wanted the promo images to look like. So I put those other notes on hold, and we'll get back to that.

And speaking of the promo image, it took me some time to get something close to what I wanted, what I saw in my head. But I'm mostly happy with the result.

So, come October... When the veil grows thin, when you see flashes of another existence from the corner of your eye. When you need help, pick up the phone. Maybe you'll have time to dial the number, and pray you hear that voice from the other side:

911, what's your emergency?

Join me for AM 800 -- WRTH: Code 3.

@CyberpunkLibrarian On the one hand, cool. On the other hand... as an ambulance owner i find this especially disturbing.

The discussion about Bluesky on Mastodon is getting ever more toxic. I had to block so many people it basically ruined being on here for me.

Like I'm accused of being paid by Jack Dorsey to be a shill because I'm saying that "well they have bugs in the beta, that's why they're doing a beta, to fix the bugs".

How in the actual fuck do you even do these mental gymnastics?

masukomi,

ActiveQuery's .includes method is like a "@$!"@#$ USB A for me. I always use the wrong form because everything else in ruby is incorrectly missing the trailing s. So i always try .include and it always breaks and I'm always confused because everything else is missing the s why is this not?

e.g. foo.exist? not foo.exists?

Does anyone know of a menu-bar app that'll let me control the sound INPUT? For some reason apple's only lets me control the OUTPUT.

Yes, i could use one of @RogueAmoeba 's amazing products, but that's like hopping in a Lamborghini to go next-door. It works, but it's also a ridiculous amount of overkill.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

related: there's something very wrong with Ventura's sound stuff. When I'm using wired headphones, and it's set to send output to them, it sometimes says "meh. fuck it." and sends it to the computer speakers instead. I have to select something else and come back to it. I'd file a "Feedback" but
a) i don't like throwing things into black holes. Feels like pointless work.
b) I know that eventually these little things build up and then many teams just close all the old tickets without looking.

Command Line I just shared this at work, but it's worth sharing wider. Did you know there's a quasi-standard for exit codes from your apps. Like, exiting with 65 actually has a specific meaning that's different from 66 ?

Well, now you do, and you can find the right code for your needs by typing man sysexits or just looking online for your favorite *nix os's copy. Here's the one for FreeBSD.

Any knowledgeable lovers out there?

Our local corvids are skittish in the extreme. Doesn't matter how calm or non-threatening, or far away a person is. If they see you, they fly. We suspect someone's been shooting them.

anyone have any suggestions for how to teach them that we're good people who have seed for them? They fly away so far that they couldn't even watch us put out seeds and come back when we leave.

side note. this applies to ALL the corvids we see. not just crows.

TIL that doesn't have real destructors, but it has something... kinda close. The problem is that it destroys the object BEFORE it calls your "finalizer" so you need to do a bunch of hoop jumping to make sure you maintain a copy of a reference to the data that you need to act on in a SEPARATE object that your finalizer will then act on.

This SO answer is the best explanation i've found:

Writers guild: we don't want to have to rewrite crappy AI first drafts.
Hollywood counteroffer: how 'bout we force you to use it while it's 💩 & you have a good argument, but revisit this issue each year afterwards as your argument gets weaker and weaker?

can you just imagine the absolute 🐄💩 writers would have to deal with if management wonks could just say "AI write me a rough draft of [terrible idea]" and force writers to edit/fix/rewrite it? nightmare fuel.

Watching the intro video for the language for programming machine learning stuff. It's a superset of and it adds some cool things, but some of those cool thing already existed in and I can't help but wonder how much cooler it would have been if they started with a language that was already doing the important aspects of what they needed.

advice for devs:

build habits of invocation that always work / never hurt instead of going with the "normal way" which only works / doesn't hurt "most of the time"

simple examples:

all the "how to git" pages use git add . but that's a terrible habit because it'll frequently check in "new" files you don't want (temp files, notes, logs, etc). git add -u will NEVER check in new files.

bundle exec rails ... ALWAYS works rails ... only ususally works.
