New:

"A catatonic who woke after 20 years could change psychiatry"

Richard Sima writes for the Washington Post: “The young woman was catatonic—unmoving, unblinking and unknowing where or who she was. Her name was April Burrell. Before she became a patient, April had been an outgoing, straight-A student majoring in accounting at the University of Maryland. But after a traumatic event when she was 21, April […]

Once again, I reiterate my desire for a single way of viewing and participating with posts on X, Threads, Mastodon, and BlueSky -- it's like instant messaging all over again, and there's no ICQ. We need a FriendFeed for the 2000s

Look at it this way: If Google has to pay news companies for the news they summarize or include links to, why doesn't it have to pay anyone else? If it indexes and summarizes my blog post, why don't I get a cheque? Is it because news is a special category of information, and if so, why don't we fund it directly if we think it has social value? https://www.seattletimes.com/opinion/google-owes-news-outlets-at-least-10-billion-yearly-study-estimates/

I know this is probably an unpopular opinion, especially right now, but I think a lot of accusations of plagiarism are overdone -- including some I have been involved in (Jill Abramson etc.). Remixing media is a fact of life now, and we should get used to it -- anything but wholesale reproduction of massive quantities of a creative work should be ignored

This is sad, but so predictable: Ello launched with a grand vision of being an alternative to profit-driven networks, took VC money, then tried to become a profit-driven network, failed miserably, sold itself and got shut down https://waxy.org/2024/01/the-quiet-death-of-ellos-big-dreams/

This study says Google benefits from news to the tune of $20 billion or so, and therefore should pay news companies. But nowhere does it quantify the benefit of the traffic That Google searches send to media websites https://www.seattletimes.com/opinion/google-owes-news-outlets-at-least-10-billion-yearly-study-estimates/

Utilities have been lying about gas stoves since the 1970s

From Kate Yoder from Mother Jones: "One-third of American kitchens have gas stoves—and evidence is piling up that they’re polluting homes with toxic chemicals. A study this summer found that using a single gas stove burner on high can raise levels of cancer-causing benzene above what’s been observed from secondhan

I'm going to post this question on every social app I have, as an experiment (question is real though): After upgrading MacBook Air to Monterey awhile back, I'm noticing huge CPU and RAM usage, mostly from Chrome. Any suggestions? Assume I know a bit about computers 😀

On getting around media paywalls, archiving content, copyright, and journalistic ethics

My editor's note on yesterday's version of the When The Going Gets Weird newsletter (which is here or at newsletter.mathewingram.com) got so long, and triggered so many conversations on Mastodon and elsewhere that I thought I would create a separate post about

If anyone saw my post about getting cell signal while flying at 38,000 feet this is a good explainer of how that can happen given the right conditions https://www.reddit.com/r/verizon/comments/jf43o9/verizon_lte_signal_at_30000_feet_in_the_air_on_an/

One other Dune 2 moment: At some point, Paul denies that he is the messiah, and Stilgar says something like " See? Only the messiah would deny he's the messiah!" This is almost word for word what they say in Monty Python's Life of Brian

@pluralistic, I apologize if I have missed it, but have you written or spoken about the lawsuits involving AI large language models and copyright? Given your background, I would be very interested in your perspective!

"I find it very hard to hate the man. I can’t summon the energy; it all feels too much like a sideshow. Elon Musk barely exists. He’s just the name we’ve given to a certain mass delusion. I can tell you who I do hate, though. After nearly seven hundred pages of warm dribble, I started to really, really hate Elon Musk’s biographer, Walter Isaacson" https://thepointmag.com/criticism/very-ordinary-men
