My understanding of is that it is very comparable with feature-wise. I only use Git because I discovered it first. It just so happens that it seems to have become the de-facto standard version control system these days.

For those who use Mercurial instead: why? Does it offer something that Git does not, or is it simply personal preference/familiarity?

me,

@strypey Some interesting points, though it does seem to have something of a No True Scotsman vibe going on. Does Mercurial address these? It didn't seem to get mentioned at all.

me,

@strypey Yeah, I used CVS before Git. I started looking at Subversion for a bit, bit the fact that I could run Git without a server was the killer feature for me.

me,

@strypey I've actually been using Gitea, though I hear there's been some unpleasantness going on with the corporate end of that.

Might be worth a look.

me,

@RL_Dane I use CoolRetroTerm as my terminal emulator, so... none of the above?

me,

@RL_Dane Didn't see your question, sorry.

Yeah, it's green on black. The poll made it seem that what it called "dark" was only white on black.

Every post in the that isn't public should be encrypted. This should be the default, so that to post publicly, a person has to know what they're doing and turn it off. That way, anyone who wants to build search and discovery tools for public posts can do so without permission, or fear of retribution.

Discuss.

me,

@strypey I imagine that to implement this, you'd have to rebuild the fediverse from scratch. Making encryption mandatory would break legacy support.

What's an uncommon skill you have that whenever you show someone they're amazed?

me,

@Mrfunkedude It's less amazing in the circles I run in on the fediverse, but I can design and build circuit boards.

It's disappointing that people will move on as if nothing happened.

The lesson here should be: we can't trust a platform where one person makes major decisions.

me,

@stefan Putting these services in a proprietary silo was probably a mistake as well, but hindsight is 20/20. Hopefully they'll learn from this mistake moving forward.

I was today years old when I learned that when inputting a password that doesn't echo on the terminal, I can usually hit CTRL-U to clear the password if I mistype instead of spamming the backspace key to be sure I've got it all.

I'm fucking dreading quote posting being added to Mastodon. They better give the ability to opt out of it.

me,

@Mrfunkedude The problem is that there isn't really a technical way to prevent a platform from implementing it. AFAIK, Mastodon is the only major fedi platform that doesn't support it. Friendica (what I'm using) has it, but I don't use it very often, typically only to boost a post that I feel is missing a CW.

I've been hearing a lot of (mostly negative) rumblings about and I've been trying to find out what all the noise is about.

What I'm struggling to understand is why they felt the need to reinvent the wheel by creating the protocol. What does it supposedly do that does not?

I don't really see a way to see this as anything other than an attempt to be deliberately incompatible for some reason.

Most of what I've been able to find online is either from tech media which glosses over all the relevant technical details, or from BlueSky's official statements which don't seem to answer it either.

I'm hearing rumours of devs furiously working on ActivityPub/AT protocol bridges.

Meaning that you may soon be able to send a post from Mastodon to Bluesky and vice versa.

@fediversenews

me,

@Susan_Larson_TN ...and they'll find themselves defederated just like any other server that doesn't properly moderate its users.

me,

@Susan_Larson_TN I'm pretty sure there are right wing nutjobs on the fediverse; they just tend to get defederated.

@Mrfunkedude I did not know this. High five from a fellow ExMo.

I got blocked/unfollowed by someone who didn't get a joke I made today. 🤣

GOOD.

me,

@Mrfunkedude I've never understood telling a person you've blocked them. It just smacks of wanting to get the last word in.

Wow 😲

Just discovered a decentralized and federated social network that works through the Gemini protocol.

It's called @sequel, and you can access it here:

gemini://sequel.space

Right now, it operates on 2 nodes with 95 users.

To say I'm shocked is an understatement.

If you're unaware of the Gemini protocol, it's something that resembles HTTP and Gopher. Here's info:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gemini_(protocol)

If you want to read about @sequel on the regular web, here it is:

https://sequel.space/home/

me,

@chrisshaw When I visit a Gemini capsule (site) I know it's not doing dodgy stuff like using JavaScript to force my browser to mine bitcoin for them. Also, cookies don't exist, and the only real way to track sessions is through (optional) session keys negotiated during the SSL handshake (and IP logging, obviously)

me,

@chrisshaw Yes, bit with Gemini, I as a user can be certain that none of that garbage is present, without needing to take their word for it. Instead, I need additional bloat to sandbox all that nonsense off.

I really don't understand why anyone felt it was a good idea to let J. Random Server execute arbitrary code on my machine without my approval.
