I saw a meme a moment ago, discussing various ways you can keep your neighbors at bay. In this case, it was appearing just slightly unhinged so they won't want to engage. :blobcatgiggle:

I laughed, it's funny, but while I was boosting and favoring it made me think about my new home. I moved in a small bit ago and I have still yet to meet all but one retiree.

No one says hello, no one stopped to welcome me or ask questions. A few have waved as they drive by and park in their garages. But they shut the doors as their cars are shutting down. I was three states away from this place a year ago and the neighborhood was much the same.

I remember when neighbors were bothersome. When you would come home and find someone sitting outside or walking their dog and they would want to strike up a conversation.

I'm curious how things will look in coming years. Will we form tighter groups with our neighborhoods, or will we further splinter, I wonder...

@mentallyalex I’m confident that living there now wouldn’t compare to my experience. I think it was the dot com bubble and early parenthood that created the perfect storm.

@mentallyalex Austin, TX was the most interactive neighborhood I’ve had. Everyone knew everyone, there were block parties, parades, holiday get togethers. It was a place you’d sit on the porch just to be able to hang out with the neighbors. It was like something out of a movie.
Now on East Coast, I only know the people in the 10 or so houses on my street. But I consider them friends - we’ll call to see if someone wants extra food, take a neighbor to the ER, and text each other with updates.

@mentallyalex I’ve only ever had that “no one talks to each other” experience living in Seattle, WA. Otherwise, people are friendly, stop to say hi and help one another out.

I am talking o a reporter about this in a couple hours: https://regina.ctvnews.ca/from-outer-space-sask-farmers-baffled-after-discovering-strange-wreckage-in-field-1.6880353

This is about an hour away from my farm, so this'll be a fun conversation, and yet another great opportunity to tell a lot of people about what a huge problem we have with unregulated commercialization of orbit. (Also I just redid my slides for my public talk next week, this is going in!)

The Tale of Two Gynecologists

This is a bit long, and I've talked about this a lot lately, but it's something I'm thinking about a lot in the wake of so much hatred of female Healthcare. When my female troubles got bad enough that I finally talked to my doctor about it, he referred me to a gynecologist. I had already had several ultrasounds and an MRI at this point, and she had put me on some oral contraceptives for several months, (which made sick to my stomach no matter what I did) and had just done another ultrasound. She greeted me with "Well, you're really messed up inside, Honey.", which already had me pretty stressed out. Then told me I would probably need surgery to figure out exactly what was going on. She then asked me if I wanted children, and I said No. I had taken my husband with me to the appointment for moral support, and she glanced over at him, and then talked to me for 5 minutes about how many women my age could still have children, and I could definitely consider it, and that they would do everything they could to make sure I could stay viable. They could freeze my eggs if I had to do a hysterectomy, just on and on. She probably asked me directly 4-5 if I was sure I didn't want kids. Finally, I said, "Ma'am, my husband got a vasectomy over a decade ago, we are absolutely sure we don't want kids." After hubs had found me crying on the toliet, because my period was late again, he went to his doctor and said, "Hey doctor, I'm thinking about a vasectomy." The doctor gave him a pamphlet to read, and made him an appointment. The whole thing was done in a few weeks.

Anyhow, she finally referred me to a gynecological surgeon, and I was not looking forward to dealing with this again, and was just generally terrified of having surgery for the first time. I met with this woman and she was so efficient and practical. It is the longest doctor appointment I've ever had, since this surgery would be exploratory, she went over every possibility of what could happen when she was inside. She did a thorough exam, she went over all the scans that I had, and explained why she thought this needed done. Then she said she would like to put in a Mirena IUD during surgery. She said, "You're in pain half the month, and there's no reason for you to have a period if you don't want to have kids. You'll have some erratic bleeding for six months, but by a year most women have a very light or no period at all, there's no reason for you to needlessly suffer if you don't end up needing a hysterectomy."

It's interesting to me still, that one doctor was so focused on what my body could do, and another so focused on how I felt. I came out of the first appointment feeling scared and confused, and the second feeling heard and cared for. Feeling valued as a person and not a baby maker made the surgery much easier to go through, and the Mirena has been great btw. Women don't have to needlessly suffer.

Did people used to look older?

megsouth,
@megsouth@c.im avatar

@RickiTarr Absolutely. In the early 70s, there wasn’t easily available sunscreen. Adults smoked indoors. Leaded gasoline spewed lead in the air and dirt. And women had shorter, manageable haircuts (we didn’t get a handheld hairdryer until 1976-ish). So, the environment changed but also shampoo, makeup, and hair care technology grew by leaps and bounds.

Okay I'm going to describe something, that I'm thinking that some other people have too:

So, when I'm feeling very sad, emotional, and overwhelmed, and I just feel like I can't keep going. I have this sort of other hyper rational part of myself. I call it Outside Man, mostly because it feels like it hovers over the top of my ocean of my emotions, and can see things from outside of where I am. Outside Man is the one who tells me that emotions change and this intensity of feeling won't last forever, and I need to do the things I know will help my mental state.

Is this or something like this, something other people experience?

And yes, I know that it's probably inherently sexist that I call what I consider my more rational self by a male moniker, but I've called it that since I was a kid, and it's stuck. Hubs said Outside Man sounds like a horror movie!

megsouth,
@megsouth@c.im avatar

@RickiTarr Ummm…so not everyone has the voice? I’ve spent years reprogramming it to spend more time as Outside Man than the catastrophizing monologue. Sort of like the devil and angel on your shoulders?
