@dgar love this song, great underrated band! Have you ever heard the extended version of love is like oxygen?

It can be hard to find since most versions are either remakes or the short radio version but it’s on YouTube, you may like it based on what I’ve seen you post

Uh oh, I disconnected a TB4 external display right as my MacBook Pro 16 was rebooting, and I think now the firmware thinks I’m always connected to a phantom external display. After reboot, the Apple logo quickly disappears, and I can’t even hold down the Power button to go into options (it also goes to a blank screen). I suspect the machine is trying to send the video output to a nonexistent display. How do I convince the machine to forget about external displays during boot?

modenaboy,
@modenaboy@mstdn.social avatar

@drahardja I’m assuming you already tried reconnecting that display, and it’s hallucinating about some other nonexistent hardware.

I don’t know if the reset PRAM trick still works on modern laptops, or whatever that other firmware thing is that has some magic key chord to reset, I think you’re supposed to hold them down as soon as you hit the power button so maybe they would take affect before it started searching for the phantoms.

modenaboy,
@modenaboy@mstdn.social avatar

@drahardja a quick Internet search and it seems like it still exists: command – option – P – R.

modenaboy,

Glad to see that printf formatting is still biting people in the ass five decades after it was introduced.

modenaboy,
@modenaboy@mstdn.social avatar

@drahardja which of the 7 million results for “printf format attack” are you referring to?

modenaboy,
@modenaboy@mstdn.social avatar

@drahardja kind of like a url escape attack, or using shell escapes, anything that doesn’t sanitize its input where escapes can be used is an enemy of all that is good.

But this one is (or will be with passage if enough time) fairly humorous. And the code’s very possibly using some variant of sprintf without checking the input.

Even more tragic if it’s logging code causing the crash.

"Unfortunately, the dropping of the bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki really is the reason why governments came around the table and were willing to discuss, despite the Cold War. I hope we don’t need to have that level of catastrophe before we act. But it may come to that".

modenaboy,
@modenaboy@mstdn.social avatar

@bruces much less concerned some rogue “AI” will wreak havoc because it become too intelligent than I worry about havoc because these systems are not truly intelligent and are misused by people who think they actually know what they’re doing.

(I’ll leave “they” vague in that last sentence because it works both ways).

modenaboy,
@modenaboy@mstdn.social avatar

@cstross @bruces I want to say that I equate (or perhaps conflate) the intelligence part of AI with understanding coupled with “ability to reason”, however I’m not sure if I can actually define what it means to reason.

It doesn’t seem like the current AI products (particularly LLMs) truly understand things, but it’s possible that they are reasoning at some level. But I’m not really sure.

How would you define an AI in terms of intelligence?

modenaboy,
@modenaboy@mstdn.social avatar

@cstross @bruces Fair enough, and I probably asked the wrong question. The rest of your reply answered a better one anyway, and definitely hits the core of my worries.

I wouldn’t want to fly on any of those airlines you describe (and some might actually be hydrogen filled balloons), and having people put their trust in the stochastic toys we have today is doing exactly that.

The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System has one tool that doesn’t work and they insist on using it anyway.

The Fed is damaging things by intending to increase unemployment under the false belief unemployment would address greed fueled inflation.

It isn’t true inflation unless wages increase too, it is profit-taking.

I truly believe that pharmatech is one of those industries that should be wholly owned and funded by the public, and its products immediately released into the public domain. It doesn’t matter how much it costs in taxpayer money; we will make it back a hundredfold in a generation in the form of a healthier species.

Imagine the US being the world’s source of freely usable medicine, instead of the world’s largest biller for healthcare. https://mstdn.social/@ashleygjovik/110867237141307266

Hey, a minor announcement: An IETF thing I helped with has been approved and will be getting an RFC number in a few weeks: https://www.ietf.org/archive/id/draft-ietf-jsonpath-iregexp-08.html

A small-ish subset of regular expression syntax/semantics, should work interoperably across the (many) popular regexp implementations.

Mostly for use in other specifications I think?

modenaboy,
@modenaboy@mstdn.social avatar

@robpike @timbray I second the motion. This sounds like a very valuable approach, focusing on a common and core use case with an eye towards reliability and interoperability. Thanks for all the work that went into this!

Recently mentioned that @neilhimself is working on an adaptation of Delany’s “Nova” for Prime and it put me in the mood, so I re-read Nova and oh wow is it fun. Delany was only 26 when he wrote it.

Anyhow, thought I’d share a random quote: “Nearly filling the cabin, the gypsy moved myriad flame-colored lights about a great sphere, in time to the crumbling figures of a grave and dissonant fugue.”

There’s something great on every page. YES, it’s a lurid dueling-aristos space opera. Still great.

@drahardja I generally also use for thing in things (although can be useful to either use map or reduce which is what I’m often actually trying to do), and even in the before times using Objective-C I didn’t use foreach and instead either used an iterator or some other mechanism. But I just wanted to add my complete absence of substance to the discourse for which I apologize.
