@anthracite she'll sit in my partner's lap (and complain about falling off in her sleep) but apparently my lap or my chair is weird somehow (it has side arms and we've wondered if she doesn't like them). I've only started trying the box this week and it seems like a success so far 2/2 days she's been there :)

(this is a cat who sits on doors and requests I bring her little boxes to fly her down, or fly her to other high places, so she's used to me moving her around in them)

@anthracite well fingers crossed, I guess if someones nicking bikes in 2023 they've gotten wise to what most of the common tagging systems look like now.

This now has me wondering about ways to conceal them inside the frame and then think about charging, waterproofing, if that would get in the way of signal etc.

@anthracite I mean maybe they ditched the whole tool bag rather than search it, or maybe the bikes just going to be resting in the weeds without its wheels which would probably be better than it being totally gone

Reminder about Mastodon "private" messages. Aside from not being end-end-encrypted (and so visible to instance administrators), they CC anyone @-mentioned ANYWHERE in the body of the message (not just those listed at the start).

They are now called "private mentions" rather than "private messages", but if you don't fully understand the semantics, this behavior may be unexpected and/or cause unpleasant side effects.

@mattblaze honestly I kinda like how they work in some ways - but also it is not how I would expect such a system to work at first glance (the mentioning someone just includes them in the message part feels open to so many errors) and it is very very surreal to me that people try and defend it like its expected behaviour, so yeah I try and mention this whole weirdness to people new to the fedi.

Just been playing "Haunting Hollow" this morning, a cool gothic doom2 level set. So far its very fair and balanced, really nice little reveals, clever layouts, and I just played level 4 (Sinking Tower of Jdjrklgufitwhtyugofplmuilginsynopdkzdnhtmksld♥ugngdmdjsdrbfnunrkdyvmfdck) and honestly it was amazing, just beautiful level design around a simple concept.

Highly recommended so far.

@adambienkov I'm not really sure about using "Trumpism" to suggest that this resurgence in right wing populism with fascist overtones is something new when it feels like mostly the same old stuff repackaged.

Some of the religious overtones of the US/UK current right seem quite different which seems to change a lot of things, but the way they claim most people secretly agree with them and including of conspiracy theories rings true as a parallel definitely.

@cstross @adambienkov indeed the two movements feel related but different, also "Trumpism" I worry is a gloss to avoid naming growing fascism.

Miriam Cates is the example giving me the most fear of something similar growing in the UK, and a lot of the anti-trans/anti-abortion stuff occurring here is using resources and ideas from the US but still a different flavour.

As you say its being kept quiet for fear of losing votes, being loudly religious in the UK seems a vote loser (currently).

Got reminded of Hyper Text Coffee Pot Control Protocol (HTCPCP/1.0) (https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc2324) and how I actually have some servers that return "418 I'M A TEAPOT" when not serving data the way you've contacted them.

Then I thought about Charlie Stross's (@cstross) Laundry novels and the implication of having servers all shout I'M A TEAPOT into the void in unison whenever they deny you something.

Are... are we invoking something we shouldn't?

Looks like someone leaked the source for wipEout at some point in 2022, this apparently lead to a small team rewriting it for more modern systems and creating a version that can run on Linux, Mac, Windows, or in a browser thanks to WASM
