Love "mandatory training" course questions.

"HEY, bobby has cancer and really hates cake with frosting. Should you give him a cake with frosting?

[ yes ] [ no ]"

hmm, wonder what the answer is

mpuckett259,
@mpuckett259@hachyderm.io avatar

@hazelweakly something I was pleasantly surprised by at this new job was that they did do a pre course quiz and only made you sit through content you missed.

@hazelweakly @jenniferplusplus classic. What I really need in that git log is "550 files changed" and a screenshot of a diff showing no changes to what's deployed lol

@mrcompletely @paris this is the way. Group meal preps for stuff that freezes good like dumplings or tamales is fun.

Remember: Data that is indistinguishable from real data is priceless from a confounding-a-system standpoint.

Catching people putting in "The Secret Life of Rabbits" or whatever is easy and can almost be automated or done by an intern, catching things that look legit but aren't is much, much harder.

So "Abbot Sux" from the Utopia Planetia Shipyards? Easy to catch. "Jane Smith" from Houston is much, much harder.

mpuckett259,
@mpuckett259@hachyderm.io avatar

@hrefna also generic names from other cultures are probably less likely to trip basic fraud detection. Like people are probably gonna ask questions if you put Jane Doe in.

I would burn so many gpus and do many questionable things if it got me the ability to throw a magic wand at a fuck cluster of terraform and tighten up / debug all of the AWS iam bullshit going on in there.

Sincerely,

mpuckett259,

@hazelweakly I try to never ever touch any IAM anything lest someone get the false impression I understand how it works and make all of it my problem.

mpuckett259,

@hazelweakly doesn't help when it's likely gonna require following multiple jumps between disparate repos that don't have any obvious links between each other.

Story time! One time I worked at a company and they got Exactly What They Asked For, but not what they wanted.

I worked there for such a short amount of time that I actually kept them off my resume entirely

mpuckett259,
@mpuckett259@hachyderm.io avatar

@hazelweakly I'm so used to this being the reality that I don't even bother listening to the answer when I ask the question of what they want anymore.

This isn't nearly the same magnitude, but watching quiet on set reminds me of how the adults in my life ruined all my hobbies as a child by trying to push me to be competitive in them, and how it continues to ruin all my hobbies because I can't just do them I have to be "good" at them too.

In the annals of things no one cares about but which are vaguely interesting to me: how my brain parses pronouns.

I got into a fight a while back with someone because I insisted that I don't have pronouns. That's not how pronouns work for me. My pronouns are preferred.

I use pronouns, but I don't "own" them.

(You can own your pronouns, they can be yours and you can "have" them, this is about me)

The analogy I use is that they are a pointer to the thing, not the thing itself

1/

mpuckett259,
@mpuckett259@hachyderm.io avatar

@hrefna mine is "everything is music." Pronouns are genres to me. They are useful(-ish) descriptors but not a full accounting of reality. Rock/rap/country/metal/punk are all extremely nebulous, and you can add more descriptors (death metal, horrorcore rap, alt rock, third/fourth/fifth wave emo lol) but they are Zeno's paradox of getting infinitely closer but never quite fully describing the thing they are meant to.

Gonna share some truths that are taboo to talk about, and everyone is gonna angrily at me about (I’m going to drink this mead then have a nap, don’t bother):glasses frames are a monopoly, but you can buy pretty nice glasses from China if you have a prescription for like $20, I have like 11 - look at Vooglam ~ nobody actually gives a shit if you go to the glamorous restaurant alone, as long as you tip well and are polite - in fact you’ll get better drinks at the bar~ the secret to doing a lot of stuff as an adult, like hobbies or going places, is just asking. Nobody gives a shit if you tip well and you’re polite. You can go almost wherever. You can finger paint. Whatevs.~ life is too short for shit beer & liquor~ life is too short for shit men, love~ there will be other loves even though it seems giant ~ trans rights are human rights and I’ll officiate your wedding ~ local elections matter ~ you should be seeing a therapist~ if you haven’t worn it in two years, donate it, darling~ people at bars want to tell you about their jobs and hobbies, and they’re all interesting~ video games and D&D are real life skills~ find the fitness that you can do long term~ no fad diets~ you don’t have to know how to code or watch Star Wars to be a great IT person~ if you ever have or think you have a serious health problem in America, understand our healthcare is shit and you need to research it yourself and then get like 3 opinions minimum. Nobody will look out for you like you do.~ you should probably wear the mask~ if you have ovaries that work you can just take birth control forever and never have a period, there are some health caveats but it’s mostly sorta kinda just a stigma not to. The military does this.~ if you have ovaries that work find an gynecologist who is generally not an asshole, life is too short for checking with your nonexistent husband ~ if your doctor harps on your bmi and nothing else, then get a new doctor, before you die. Literally.~ it’s a good night if you get home safe, brush your teeth, and take an aleve~ life is too short to penny pinch instead of living, because soon we’ll be gone~ you look perfect in that outfit to everyone except you ~ life is too short for shit jobs ~ ask how other people are doing, and listen~ genuinely care about what happens to other people because it will happen to you

@hacks4pancakes a lot of cars don't even come with spare tires and jacks anymore. I tried to help an Uber driver I was riding with once when his tire blew out and we were both dumbfounded that there wasn't a tire in the well, just one of those puncture fill sprays for like nail holes and the like.

I find it fascinating that we talk about over engineering as if it's a thing in software engineering. It's not, cut it out, stop talking about that.

If I'm a contractor and I over engineer something, guess what? It works for that use case and all the future ones. The only thing I wasted was money and time. Did you make a 10 ton capacity deck when you only need 2 tons? Cool... It's still a deck.

Software engineering? We don't have over engineering. We have "building to solve the wrong problem"

@hazelweakly while doing consulting it was incredibly obvious that the most valuable (aka "stickiest") service we could provide was a translation service from business needs to technical requirements. Talking to users is by far the most important skill you can have.

mpuckett259,
@mpuckett259@hachyderm.io avatar

@hazelweakly for the same reason naming things is the hardest problem in computer science, understanding business needs is extremely hard and the only thing that actually matters at the end of the day. You can always google "how to balance a binary tree" you can't Google "wtf does this Product Manager what from me?!?"
