hacks4pancakes,

Gonna share some truths that are taboo to talk about, and everyone is gonna angrily at me about (I’m going to drink this mead then have a nap, don’t bother):glasses frames are a monopoly, but you can buy pretty nice glasses from China if you have a prescription for like $20, I have like 11 - look at Vooglam ~ nobody actually gives a shit if you go to the glamorous restaurant alone, as long as you tip well and are polite - in fact you’ll get better drinks at the bar~ the secret to doing a lot of stuff as an adult, like hobbies or going places, is just asking. Nobody gives a shit if you tip well and you’re polite. You can go almost wherever. You can finger paint. Whatevs.~ life is too short for shit beer & liquor~ life is too short for shit men, love~ there will be other loves even though it seems giant ~ trans rights are human rights and I’ll officiate your wedding ~ local elections matter ~ you should be seeing a therapist~ if you haven’t worn it in two years, donate it, darling~ people at bars want to tell you about their jobs and hobbies, and they’re all interesting~ video games and D&D are real life skills~ find the fitness that you can do long term~ no fad diets~ you don’t have to know how to code or watch Star Wars to be a great IT person~ if you ever have or think you have a serious health problem in America, understand our healthcare is shit and you need to research it yourself and then get like 3 opinions minimum. Nobody will look out for you like you do.~ you should probably wear the mask~ if you have ovaries that work you can just take birth control forever and never have a period, there are some health caveats but it’s mostly sorta kinda just a stigma not to. The military does this.~ if you have ovaries that work find an gynecologist who is generally not an asshole, life is too short for checking with your nonexistent husband ~ if your doctor harps on your bmi and nothing else, then get a new doctor, before you die. Literally.~ it’s a good night if you get home safe, brush your teeth, and take an aleve~ life is too short to penny pinch instead of living, because soon we’ll be gone~ you look perfect in that outfit to everyone except you ~ life is too short for shit jobs ~ ask how other people are doing, and listen~ genuinely care about what happens to other people because it will happen to you

This is a fascinating one. There's all this history about the invention of the contraceptive pill and how the decision to interrupt the pills and for women to [appear to] menstruate was more a political/moral/religious/marketing decision than a medical decision.

@hacks4pancakes
I heard this amazing podcast about it, which I can't find right now.

One of the interesting questions is, how many times in their lives, total, would woman have menstruated in the old days before the pill?

If they were having children … not many. Because from a young age, they would spend huge blocks of their life pregnant and/or breast feeding.

hacks4pancakes,

@negative12dollarbill if you have 12 babies that’s 108ish months pregnant out of like 450

grahamc,

@hacks4pancakes Wow! So much wisdom here, thanks for the post Lesley!!! 🙏😀

thebeehammer,

@hacks4pancakes this is an amazingly distilled list of things. Thank you for sharing.

One thing that stuck out for me is the wedding officiant piece. I got my license through the Church of The Latter Day Dude () to perform a wedding for my cousin and her now wife. It was a wonderful thing to be part of and I’m so glad I did it. ❤️

TindrasGrove,

@hacks4pancakes co-signed all. Being polite is basically magic, even if you can’t afford to tip well.

@hacks4pancakes a lot of cars don't even come with spare tires and jacks anymore. I tried to help an Uber driver I was riding with once when his tire blew out and we were both dumbfounded that there wasn't a tire in the well, just one of those puncture fill sprays for like nail holes and the like.

My mom also ran hot water over the lid, the metal lid expands more than the glass jar.
Re: banging the lid and breaking the jar ... my mom whacked the jar lid upwards from the edge with a table knife. Sometimes one method, sometimes the other.
I have a rubbery disk that I put over the lid, it gives great grip on the lid and that alone hrlps me open the jar most of the time.

    darthnull,

    @hacks4pancakes I’ve done that for years — learned it from watching my mother. But I never ever thought about that as the reason it works.

    I guess I always figured it was just breaking free … small amounts of liquid or whatever that froze it in place.

    hacks4pancakes,

    @darthnull it’s releasing the pressure. Think airplane door.

    gsuberland,
    @gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

    @hacks4pancakes @darthnull or, rather, releasing the lack of pressure. jars are sealed under vacuum, which is what holds the lid on tight and prevents bacteria ingress, and implements the "pop up" safety feature in the lid that tells you if the seal is broken.

    most lids are designed with ridges so you can fit a butter knife between the threads and the side of the lid, then lever out to break the vacuum.

    darthnull,

    @hacks4pancakes Oh, yeah, I get it. Just never thought about it that way before, always figured it more about something in the threads jamming it up.

    But that makes perfect sense.

    BenAveling,

    @hacks4pancakes I haven’t tried that one. Another jar opening tip: hold the lid and turn the jar.

    Sunny,

    @hacks4pancakes
    You should look in to getting a “Gilhoolie”…. Best kitchen tool ever made. Opens any twist off lid with ease! Won’t break glass… as a few of us Neanderthals have done trying to “gently tap” a jar lid.🤣

    @hacks4pancakes you are making us men redundant, one toot at a time...

    😀

    hacks4pancakes,

    @Jon_Kramer sorry sometimes there is a jar emergency. You just really need a pickle

    Dave_von_S,

    @hacks4pancakes or take a small but sturdy kitchen utensil, stick it between the edge of the lid and jar, and give it a gentle push towards the jar until you hear the ‘pop’

    jernej__s,

    @hacks4pancakes I stick teaspoon under the edge and press on it, this is by far the most reliable method I found to open the jars.
