I grew up in a city of more than a million people, which was also an important shipping port for oil, imported goods and cocaine.

So, I got used to there always being somewhere to get food.

It's not easy getting used to small-town life.

A pair of eyes that say "please don't crush me"

and also a second pair of eyes

and also a third pair of eyes

I'm not sure who this guy is, on first sight I thought it might be a pseudoscorpion, but on closer inspection it does not appear to have pincers - so it seems to be some kind of spider.

Another photo of the same spider from a diagonal angle, showing four eyes and the front legs, which are quite beefy. The spider is dark colored and standing on a wood table. Most of the body is blurry and out of focus.
A side view of the same spider. This shows that the body is elongated and dark and has a few bright yellow spots on the side.

My lil cousin started working the mixer at a local club so I went to see her and the show.

This guy went by "Mo$" (Mo-Dollas), and was a pretty good showman.

The US government publishes a yearly list of online and physical marketplaces specialized in trading pirated and counterfeit goods, which is... convenient, so you can avoid them.

This list includes Sci-Hub, Cuevana and Greenhills Shopping Center in Manila, which is pretty eclectic.

Imagine being a pre-Inuit wandering into the north-american wilderness, the first human to ever do so.

Behind you are the blood feuds of the tribes of the old country, and before you virgin forests, lakes and prairies, teeming with game, fish, water, flint, food plants and medicinal herbs - anything you could need, with no other human around for hundreds of thousands of miles.

Paradise must have been real for some brief moments in time.

Holy shit, the damage in Houston from last nights storm is far worse than I imagined.

I just found this channel called Ancient Americas that does long documentaries on the history and archaeology of the Americas.

It's great.

This one discusses some recent discoveries concerning the settlement of the Americas.

This microscope lens for my camera is one of the coolest things I've ever made.

Anytime I find a tiny bug in my place I get my mind blown.

Case in point: Can someone help me identify what it is that I found? I don't think I've ever seen anything like it.

Found in Raleigh, NC.

A top-down view of the same insect showing the spikes. There are two rows of four yellow spikes, while all the rest is dark gray or black.

A gif showing various individual photos of the same insect taken from the front, with different parts of the insect in focus.

There's a guy called Pedro Neves who is designing and building a Tadpole cargo trike with tilting front wheels (for better ride quality).

He's sharing his design for free, because, as he says in his comments:

"I love the learning process and the sharing of knowledge. And because making stuff makes me happy, I try to incentivize others to do that too."

My nervous Formica subsericea colony. These are black field ants. When I turn on the light they panic. A newly emerged worker (called a callow) cowers as her sisters stampede over her. She is newly emerged and not strong enough to run and freak out.

One of her sisters picks her up and she tucks her legs in like a pupae so she is easy to carry. In a few days she will be a lovely black like her older sisters.

The light gray ant picked up by a sister.
Side view of callow and fully hardened exoskeleton.

@futurebird Could it just be confusion about the sudden light change making them think its daytime?

Like how animals will behave strangely during eclipses because of the sudden darkness making them think it's nighttime.

Portugal is crushing it: renewables met 91% of Portugal’s electricity needs in the first 4 months this year & have pushed their⚡️prices to a 4 yr low!

Renewables are carrying an increasing % of their electrcity demand in the first 4 months in 2024:

  • 95% April
  • 91% March
  • 88% Feb
  • 81% in Jan

Portugal’s rapid transition is evidence it can be done: renewables are up from 27% in 2005 & 54% in 2017 with their last coal power plant shut down in 2021.

@BlackAzizAnansi Jesus. "Oh, we cant try this person unless we also try this completely made up other person. What do you mean you cant bring charges on a made up person? Sounds like you're biased to me".

"You can't try X unless you also try Y, hence, X gets to walk free".

This is the shit that flies in this country because of decades of undereducating the populace.
