My basement setup is working out well. I picked up a docking station for my Dell laptop at a thrift store last year, and I've set it all up as a kind of desktop. I've bought card tables at thrift stores to help organize the basement, too. Plus I can have my office phone on my desk.

Across the nation, right-wing lawmakers aim to ban lab-grown "meat", some intend to criminalize the selling, manufacturing or distributing cultured protein

Sixteen states--Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming have already targeted it with laws, so far

Why? They see it as a "war on ranching" and a need to protect the agriculture industry

@paul I love a good steak, but when you look at what it costs to grow a pound of meat versus a pound of grain, a war on ranching doesn't sound half-bad.

Idea: An “Up-Goer Five” of scientific papers. Folks summarize high impact papers in dead simple, non-specialized language. Help folks learn stuff without the shade of sensational journalism.

I'd note, as one can note every year, that the writer is rarely thanked in Oscar acceptance speeches. There would be no movie without the writer.

Some personal writing: this is the script for my part of a video I did with @atgonzalez last year. He asked people to write about the video game moments that scared us.

https://www.ndhfilms.com/blog/2024/03/2024-03-10_riding_the_dark_highway_with_samus_aran.html

This was my story. It's called Riding the Dark Highway With Samus Aran.

Sleep tight. ;-)

I finished reading The Breathing Method last night. A very nice ghost story by Stephen King, and probably the overlooked story from his book Different Seasons.

As I was reading, I tried to imagine the story as a movie. While the ending is haunting on the page, it would come across as hokey on the screen, unless handled with great care by the right filmmakers.

The Last Deadloss Visions, an essay by Christopher Priest (author of The Prestige). It chronicles the history of The Last Dangerous Visions, a short story anthology that has been yet to be published after a half-century. Since the print edition is absurdly expensive, I was glad to re-discover this plain-text online copy. https://web.archive.org/web/20000902203835/http://sf.www.lysator.liu.se/sf_archive/sf-texts/Ansible/Last_Deadloss_Visions,Chris_Priest

My DreamHost server stopped generating daily access logs. It's still writing to the access log file, so I've written a node script to extract a daily report from it.

I use the access logs to track views of the e-books on my site.

I was thinking about how many Star Trek episodes have the cast being possessed, cloned, or copied. I'm pretty sure this was to cut down costs. The very first episode of the original series was about a shape-shifter.
