Anyone have issues with VLC not playing any DVDs? I assume this has to do with DRM, but search results on the topic are limited.

@nantucketebooks@fosstodon.org avatar

@lns Yes, that's what I was looking for. Sadly, it doesn't appear to be in the apt for Trisquel.

Do I understand correctly that Replicant is not available for any 4G phones? If so, that's a shame, because 3G has effectively disappeared.

It amuses me that Starbucks is selling coffee (an intestinal stimulant) with olive oil added. It reminds me of the episode where Ted's boss in HIMYM was building a skyscraper that looked like a giant penis, and everyone was afraid to say anything.

I imagine the scene thusly:

Employee 1: We're selling laxatives?
Employee 2: Sssh!
Executives: (shaking each others hands, pocketing bonuses, quietly shitting their pants)

My is officially over. It was a great experience diving deeper into and thinking about it, especially trying to test the limits of how feasible going fully foss is for me, and talking to non-tech people about software freedom issues.

I will have a blog post up soon, but I'm still working through my thoughts.

@kbarker @nix Certain MacBooks from 2006 are capable of being fully-free computers, with a Libreboot BIOS and an OS such as Trisquel.

I recently watched Strange World, largely because the animation looked interesting. However, I was extremely pleasantly surprised by the optimistic and surprisingly radical and themes.

Pop Culture Detective regularly has good video essays, and their essay on this one is no different: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqQJHja9qxU

@nix I will have to watch this movie, its theatrical run seems to have been hurt by a lack of promotion.

A quick blog post, comparing the state Twitter/"X Corp" with Apple in 1997, when it purchased NeXT and Steve Jobs returned. It really helps to lay out a clear long-term vision for your product or service. https://nantucketebooks.com/blog/2023/04/2023-04-30_long-term_vision.html

The good news is that that the Dell Latitude E6400 really is compatible with Libreboot. The bad news is that if it has Nvidia graphics, installing Libreboot will leave you without a display. If you're buying an E6400 on eBay, make sure it has Intel graphics, same stipulation as the ThinkPad T60.

    @benjaminhollon @msprout @RL_Dane I once wrote a program to parse through my Mail folder. I called it NICNAC, which was an acronym for NICNAC Is Certainly Not A Client.
