For my birthday, I'd really like it if my beloved fedi could spread word far and wide of Kitsune Tails. It's a platformer with a heartwarming story featuring queer main characters and personal discoveries in classic SMB3 style. You can find trailer, screenshots, and wishlist links here: https://kitsunegames.com/kitsunetails

It's coming out this year and the team and I have been working hard on it for several years now. Most of the team is queer in some form so by boosting you'd not only be making me happy on my birthday, but supporting a bunch of queer creators making queer art as well

yuzu kitsune tails, a purple haired fox girl, picks up samurai armor in a tower that's rapidly filling with lava. she jumps away from the rising lava and sticks her spear in the wall, doing a dashing twirl to get on top of it. she walks off the spear and into a new scene, fighting a ghost fox with armor and spear. it stabs and she jumps over, but is caught by a follow up stab. the ghost fox over extends and its ghostly powers wane, giving yuzu a chance to bop on its head

If you have not yet done so, start an account on the Internet Archive. I was able to borrow a book from them which would have otherwise cost hundreds of dollars to purchase.

@nantucketebooks they're actually hiring with a very good compensation package too. I'm very tempted, would be a dream to work with them, but I like my current job too much rn

Is it just me or should it be really easy to provide cheap, high-quality static site hosting with unlimited sites on custom domains/subdomains?

I kinda wanna start up a service where people can get that for, like, $12/yr. It wouldn't make me much money, sure, but it would prove a point.

hm. I was saying that as a joke but now I'm seriously considering it. If I were to start up something like that, is there anything here who'd be interested? Would probably need at least a couple dozen people to make it financially stable.

The secret to succeeding in technology is to build exciting things with boring technology.

Boring tech is well-understood and the edge cases well-known.

Your product should be what’s exciting, not your stack or your devops.

Personal opinion.

Despite RMS I think of the GPL and using those licences as a gift to the commons in perpetuity.

Unlike more permissive licences you aren't at risk of future releases being locked up in a kinda "Pray I don't alter the deal more" vibe.

There's nothing petty in how I use it.

But then I tend more towards the collective freedoms, than the freedom of anything goes.

I believe future generations should have access to all the code.

I'm taking some time today to organize my email inbox. Looking back through all the correspondence with authors, artists, fans, and supports has brought me happiness and gratitude.

Also wondering why ProtonMail doesn't automatically alphabetize folders.

ALRIGHT PUNKS!

The time is fast approaching for my book/record/movie store to open.

We're rapidly putting the final pieces in place!

Books have shipped to us, records have arrived and are being put on to shelves.

We'll be open within 10 days. If I'm especially lucky, and the goons from the city are kind, we'll be open by Friday.

ajroach42,
@ajroach42@retro.social avatar

Right now, I'm importing slightly more than 1100 individual book titles in to our store. It's going to take a few days for the to all show up online, but they're coming along.

If you want to watch the process, check this page: https://www.hemlockbazaar.com/product-category/books/

The new books will start showing up between Confessions of a Master Jewel Thief and The Blaft Anthology of Tamil Pulp Fiction, and will fill out many many pages over time.

I said it several times, but with Ivory's latest announcement, let me repeat it: we (the Mastodon team) are working on implementing Quote Posts. This is a much more complex feature than showing a preview for a link to a post, which is done at the moment by multiple clients.

It is a complex task and we have been working on defining the feature and the protocol-level details for some time. We are moving forward, and there are fewer hard questions to answers, but progress is there.

A key argument in buying SUVs is that they are safer. You may be safer inside but SUVs are killers.

In the USA, the chances of a pedestrian dying in a single-vehicle crash are 68% higher when that vehicle is an SUV or pickup.
A 10 cm increase in front-end height causes a 22% increase in pedestrian fatality risk.
The survival probability of women, children, and seniors are more strongly affected.

Incognito Mode does not protect your identity at all while you browse the internet

All that it does is stop your browsing history from being logged locally. It does not hide your IP address.

Google, your ISP, and the websites you visit can still track you.

We could schedule it for Presidents' Day. Who's in?

    Bookmaking Saturday!

    Today it is a butterfly stitch book. It is a bit loose and rests open pretty easily. Similar to a Coptic stich but a bit easier on the hands...and I love the interwoven threads 🤗

    It's been 20 days since I started my journey to use GrapheneOS. And Im thriving! I've removed Google Play services from my phone and set up my PC to automatically redirect away from all Google products. I've also left mainstream social media years ago and have now shifted my social media presence to Fediverse.

    In case you're keen to do the same, here's a list of the alternatives I'm using now (this is list is not exhaustive):

    Google Docs/Sheets: Cryptpad.fr (https://cryptpad.fr/)
    Social Media: Mastodon (come and join us at https://infosec.exchange)
    Email: ProtonMail (with personal domain)
    Authenticator: Aegis (https://getaegis.app/)
    Photo Management: Immich (https://github.com/immich-app/immich)
    Google Translate: Libre Translate (https://libretranslate.com/)
    Youtube: PeerTube (https://joinpeertube.org/)
    Search Engine: SeaRx (on the way to be selfhosted and DuckDuckGo)
    Web Browser: Waterfox (https://www.waterfox.net/)
    Phone: grapheneOS (from a refurbished Pixel 6)
    Google Maps: OpenStreet Map (https://www.openstreetmap.org)
    Calendar, Online storage: ProtonDrive, Proton Calendar
    App stores: Droidify (F-droid) and Aurora store for the occasional non F-Droid apps (like the ProtonMail client)
    Messaging: Matrix (https://matrix.org) Session (https://getsession.org/) and Signal
    Notes: Joplin (https://joplinapp.org/)

    How about:

    • Be able to collaborate intimately

    A fun CSS snippet I just worked out:

    @media print {
    	a::after {
    		content: " <"attr(href)">"
    	}
    }

    When you've got this and go to print out a website, it puts the target URL of any links in <> after the link text. Pretty cool!

    I've added it to https://benjaminhollon.com so you can try it out; just open the page and press "print" in your browser's controls; the preview should show what I'm talking about.

    I'm considering whether to add this to readable.css. At the least, I wanna do some changes to the styling to have it be plain black on white when printing, to save ink and look nicer. Maybe widen the column to fit the page.

    Thoughts are very welcome.

    @creativecommons we are in dire need of a non-commercial content license made with the in mind.

    The CC org could spark a lot of generative dialog by simply drafting such a license in the open, long before calling it Done.

    I don’t know how to put this in generalized legal language, but I know what I oppose.

    I do NOT consent to my content being used in:

    • for-profit
    • for-profit LLM/SMM training
    • for-profit profiling
