Colorado has a climate similar to... Afghanistan. I don't doubt it. Kabul and Denver have similar elevations above 5,000 feet. Afghanistan has mountains that would put our fourteeners to shame! https://sopuli.xyz/post/11711175

A short essay from Matthew Zoller Seitz at @ebertvoices It is irritating how so many movies have to end with a little tease for a potential sequel. Though, there can be unintentional comedy when a movie assumes it will get a sequel, as with Shyamalan's The Last Airbender, or the movie Devil which he produced. https://www.rogerebert.com/mzs/its-ok-for-movies-to-just-end

My article on the Dark Horse Saloon got read live on Boulder's college radio station. Thank you, DJ Greg! You can listen to an archived copy here: https://ndhfilms.com/hangmanshollow (~3.5 MB)

I've been monitoring the ups and downs of rebuilding subscriptions post-Amazon for the magazines that have been impacted. Unsurprisingly, it turns out that survival depends on us being more shameless. So...

My latest article for Yellow Scene Magazine. Thoughts on Boulder's famous Dark Horse Saloon. https://yellowscene.com/2024/04/10/from-my-corner-of-hangmans-hollow-memories-of-the-dark-horse-and-other-haunts/ "The Dark Horse is the bar you find on dead planets at the far edge of star systems. Its cousins are Mos Eisley on Tatooine, and Hangman’s Hollow, last stop of the Galaxy Express."

Always nice to get some positive comments on a story, and from strangers, no less.

weirdwriter, to Pubtips

I bookmarked this #Publishing article that basically asks, what are we paying trad pub for? While I do have an agent, an amazing one, actually! I'll be with this agent until he retires, no author should ever, ever, ever! Make a mood board of your submission! Your agent is your mood board! This would be a fantastic time for a non-discriminatory publishing cooperative to form right now. I know about Book view Cafe but they don't want blind writers like me or other blind writers. I hate self publishing. Seriously, I can't express how much I detest the self publishing process. Just because I have an agent, though, publishing is rough right now! This would be an excellent time for an indie publisher to rise up and not end up on Writer Beware. https://www.lilithsaintcrow.com/2024/04/we-gotta-talk-about-publishing/ #SelfPublishing #Cooperative

Picked up my copy yesterday. J. Michael Straczynski published this book to help return Harlan Ellison to the public's awareness. If you'd like to see what Ellison was all about, this book is easy available in bookstores and online.

There seems to be a popular sentiment that "anything after the word 'but' can be ignored." Mentioned in Game of Thrones, even. This can be an unhelpful way of thinking.

What comes before the 'but' is often an attempt to understand or respect a certain viewpoint or circumstance.

Harlan Ellison on the word 'sci-fi'. https://www.yewtu.be/watch?v=YqFazuQr6P8

"'Sci-fi' is one of those horrific crotchets...it's like referring to the feminist movement as 'fem-lib'. This is all intended to diminish ... When you are able to diminish something, you don't actively have to go after it. When people start thinking Independence Day is science fiction, and they've never read a novel by AE van Vogt, or they've never read a novel by Kate Wilhelm, then what we have is a bastardized form."

This is the surface of a comet! Dust is swirling around the surface of Comet 67/P -- captured in 2016 by ESA's Rosetta spacecraft, processing by Jacint Roger Perez.

Still one of the most remarkable scenes in space exploration.

@coreyspowell Imagine standing there (in a space suit, of course) and looking up at that.

Although, from what I've heard, wiggling your toes on that comet might be enough to send you flying.
