I'm suddenly struck wondering why the drinking straw has become such a staple. It's… kinda unnecessary for most (abled) people and situations?

nantucketebooks,
@nantucketebooks@fosstodon.org avatar

@amin I believe the idea was that holding a glass transfers body heat to the beverage, so a straw might keep the beverage colder. (To be fair, this was in a Richard Scarry cartoon, IIRC).

Vic and Blood: The Continuing Adventures of a Boy and His Dog has been added to the Harlan Ellison Directory. https://www.ndhfilms.com/other/ellison/index.php#vicandblood This book includes three stories about Ellison's two most enduring characters: the teenage scavenger Vic, and his telepathic dog Blood. Some (long out of print) versions of this book include a 1987 comic book adaptation with art by Richard Corben. A high point for post-apocalyptic fiction.

I've been reading a new author this past week, Gerald Kersh. A good horror writer, although the first story of his I read, The Queen of Pig Island, was more sad than scary.

Another benefit of : sometimes you need it to use more open hardware, like an Atheros wifi card. The non-free Lenovo BIOS will sometimes just not run if it detects hardware it hasn't whitelisted.

If you want to build a freedom-respecting computer, do it in this order: install the Linux or BSD distro of your choice, then install Libreboot, and finally install the new wifi card if necessary.

Here's a Life Pro Tip I've followed for the past fifteen years or so: when you meet someone, and you think of some wordplay based on their name, try not to say it out loud. Statistically, it's unlikely you're the first person to think of it, and this person has probably been pestered with that joke for a long time.

I enjoy doing wordplay in my head a lot, so this tip has helped prevent it from getting the better of me.

Everyone said get a Brother printer so I bought a 3-in-1 scanner and printer. There seems to be something wrong with it though. I plugged it into a Linux laptop, opened a document, pressed print, selected the printer, and it printed. Then I opened simple-scan, pressed scan, and it scanned.

This isn't how printers and scanners are supposed to work. Where do I install the drivers that don't work properly etc? This was no fun. I demand a refund.

nantucketebooks,
@nantucketebooks@fosstodon.org avatar

@JoeRess In duckduckgo, I have generally search 'brother printer driver linux' followed by the printer's model name. There is a tool you may download that will install the correct driver for you.
