I've read a lot online about how "Y2K was overblown". As an engineer who worked like crazy in 1999 to correct our systems this drives me crazy.

Today I read about games going offline, watches getting frozen and airline tickets showing the wrong date.

Because of a leap year. Which happens every FOUR years (give or take).

Yeah Y2K was a one time thing. (Well at least until year 10000)

Isn't 2038 going to be fun.

@neatchee @damieng I remember. An immense amount of prep went in, and even so large areas in Tokyo and France suffered from Y2K glitches, as I recall.

I really want a website, "fascist or not", where, when I find a cool blog where somebody posts cool pictures of miniatures that they paint or circuit boards they design or something, I can just do a quick check before boosting to find out if they believe some off-the-wall shit like great replacement theory or that Maine should violently invade and occupy Quebec or something. It would save me so much time both reading and writing exasperated DMs

If you want to understand just why the current incarnation of capitalism is such a mess (allowing for the possibility that there could be a version that isn't such a mess, which is a topic for another day), I recommend two relatively short but packed books. These are:

Leisure: The Basis of Culture, by Joseph Pieper

The Abolition of Man, by CS Lewis

The first one argued that an over-emphasis on work leads directly to tyranny, and that leisure (properly understood) is key to freedom and democracy.

The second traces how (and explains why) the education system in the first world is geared towards turning people into cogs, not fulfilled human beings.

Both are philosophical, but in a practical, "ideas have consequences" sort of way.

I think a lot of people in this site will like them.
