Tune in to Budget Committee wrap-up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHaXP3JV25c

I am doing dishes and so on, so can provide only sporadic comments.

Can't believe I'm listening to Budget Committee instead of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard

On the bright side, opening a nice-smelling new bag of coffee beans :blobcoffee:

ok even I'm not enough of a masochist to listen to City Council while doing laundry

@nev@bananachips.club avatar

anyway, instead of watching budget stuff I'm at the vet with poor Wasabi

Wasabi inside a soft cat carrier rubbing her head against my hand through the mesh window.

update: Wasabi and I are back home. I am slightly motion-sick. Wasabi is on painkillers and antibiotics but is back in her windowsill bed with her eyes glued on the dark-eyed juncos that are hopping around eyeing the chunks of suet on the windowsill.

In the same vein as https://mastodon.social/@danluu/109537224752779343, something that surprised me is the rate of people LARPing the lifestyle of a successful businessperson, farmer, or whatever.

Now that you can make a ton of money on insta/youtube/etc., there are famous examples of this, but what got me were the mundane examples, e.g., this seemingly successful businessperson would constantly post about her business acumen, and then one day she starts posting about being a realtor, which seemed weird. Years later,

I love leaf-cutter ants! I have never seen them in real life but the nearest colony, as far as I know, is at Montrรฉal's Insectarium.

Was hoping to go in to City Hall tomorrow to watch public deputations on the budget, but looks like I'm going to be staying at home (or going to the vet) with poor Wasabi who I think has some kind of urinary infection and is miserable.

Tired of this: "learn C so you can understand how a computer really works."

So much of modern computers is not visible from C (pipelining, virtual memory, branch prediction, cache misses, etc).

I guess what they mean is, "you learn about pointers and consecutive memory locations"? How is that helpful for programming in other languages without pointers?

C teaches you an abstraction of computers based on the PDP-11. It's interesting, but it's not essential.

Hit the first "fucking inject this into my veins" Magnus Archives episode because I am a complete and total sucker for space horror, self-contained little stories, and more "creepiness" than "jumpscare": https://snarp.github.io/magnus_archives_transcripts/episode/057.html

nev,

(Doesn't require any background knowledge of the series; the import of the stuff at the end is that, as you can probably guess, the people/companies/places mentioned have repeatedly come up in the series before; and that the narrator is extremely paranoid about his co-workers and very bad at hiding it.)
