The music African Americans made between roughly 1955 - 1975 is the greatest art movement in human history.

Outrageous by Kliph Nesteroff. A history of censorship in entertainment. Both sobering and entertaining book citing examples when censorship went too far (ie "communist" related censorship) to examples when censorship was necessary (ie canceling things like blackface). Not a book for the "you can't be funny anymore" Joe Rogan set, as author makes the case there's more free speech today than ever.

Also the Nazis banned jazz in 1937. Listen to jazz.

Kalil El-Zabar - A Time For Healing.
Have been loving this spiritual jazz release from last year. Good Sunday music.

Transcendent song 🇧🇷

Melodies galore. Best descending bassline you will ever hear. Amazing bridge with swooning strings leading to cathartic landing. Trippy background vocals make me wish I was on mushroom tea. And Jorge Ben’s vocal phrasing just takes you on a ride. Sublime.

#HotTakeJubilee Keith Moon sucks. Can't keep time. No pocket. No groove. Definitely not "jazzy" which is how some of these British rock drummers are labeled (ahem, Ginger Baker). Plays like Animal from the Muppets. Ruins all the beauty of delicacy of Townsend's songs. I like the Who still, but honestly I like Townsend solo more than the Who.

#NowPlaying - @SunRaUniverse at montreux, july '76. coincidentally, almost exactly concurrent with the previous don cherry session. but, maybe not coincidentally, also near the end of the arkestra's furthest-out period, before they headed for more inside orbits. not inside yet, though. sprawling full-spectrum 20+ member 2-drummer ensemble #jazz arrangements blowing apart & back again, led by sunny's powerful (& wonderfully recorded) #piano & noisy starstuff #synth. @vinylrecords

- don & moki cherry & the organic music theatre, france, late august '72. the height of the cherrys' is-this-even- commune vibes in the middle of a giant straight jazz festival featuring mingus, blakey, etc. kids on stage, puppet shows, lots of chants & singalongs & percussion (including nana vasconcelos), some light . from the(?) period when cherry didn't play any at all. https://blankformseditions.bandcamp.com/album/organic-music-theatre-festival-de-jazz-de-chateauvallon-1972 @vinylrecords

- revisiting early santana for the first time in eons at the behest of a (drummer) pal who suggested trying to background carlos & focus on the next-level collectivity of this specific group of players. and, like, shit yeah! it's probably just stating the obvious to say that santana were an incredible band, but it made them feel fresh to me. @vinylrecords

@bourgwick @vinylrecords I'd say the original (and best) version of the band is on the Fillmore 1968 album. Doc Livingstone on drums, Marcus Malone on congas, David Brown on bass.

#nowplaying Larry Coryell - Coryell. If you own one Coryell album it should be this one (Fairyland is also amazing). Bernard Perdie on drums. Ron Carter bass on two tracks. Coryell in Hendrix mode for a lot of this album. Psychedelic jazz guitar masterpiece. Still a bargain bin album at record stores. @vinylrecords
