Are people still happy to use AI generated profile images? Do you feel it serves a purpose?
I personally feel it makes one's account less personal.

๐ŸŽฎ ๐Ÿ‘พ Tomb Raider Remasters

Just started playing the remasters.

First of all Aspyre has done a great job here.

These made me realise why I still prefer these old titles to modern games. Modern games have a more hand hold movie experience rather than an actual game.

I am torn between the tank controls vs modern controls, both have benefits. I love the precision of tank controls, but modern controls are more free flowing.

Will post more thoughts as I go along.

Some of you who like working in an office, but have a 90-minute commute to get there, would have a shorter and easier commute if the people who don't like working in that same office didn't have to.

Support remote work, even if you want to be on-site.

@maxleibman currently I am commuting once or twice a week, spending 5 hours door to door.

Honestly getting really discouraged by all these layoffs. I had high hopes in the beginning because companies typically do a lot of hiring in Q1, but with big tech companies doing sweeping layoffs again the market is being flooded with highly qualified devs.

That being said, if you need an experienced engineer, I'm here.

nosherwan,
@nosherwan@fosstodon.org avatar

@watzon @postmodern I am interested in doing exactly the same, but trying to do a solo SAAS project seems out of reach.

Would you mind sharing what sort of ideas are you looking into, not too much detail but I am looking for like minded people, and potentially similar tech stack interests...

Released in 2000, Giants: Citizen Kabuto is a third person shooter (TPS), real-time strategy (RTS), and kaiju game all in one.

This game deserves a better name because who the hell is ever going to remember Giants: Citizen Kabuto? What does that even mean? The name alone doesnโ€™t even imply what this game is about. Is it a video game retelling of Citizen Kane?

In reality, this has to be one of the most ambitious games Iโ€™ve ever played โ€“ thereโ€™s nothing like it. You get three different campaigns, controlling three different alien races, all with tremendously different abilities.

In all this, we have one of the funniest stories Iโ€™ve ever encountered in PC gaming. This could be a Douglas Adams novel.

On a planet called The Island, one amphibious humanoid species called the Sea Reapers dominates. To do this, they collect another humanoid species called the Smarties to sacrifice to a giant called Kabuto. This being is beyond the control of the Sea Reapers, but they can pacify him for their own advantage.

Then one day, a very British hamster-like humanoid species called Meccaryns crash lands on the Island. One of them, called Baz, chances upon a Smartie who helps him find the rest of his crew. Shenanigans ensue, and now the Meccaryns are battling the Sea Reapers.

You start off as Baz. Later on, you switch to a Sea Reaper named Delphi. Finally, your last campaign is as the Kabuto, wreaking havoc across the Island.

Most of the dev team worked on MDK, a classic TPS. At first, it seems to be a lot like MDK โ€“ but with a jet pack. But after you rescue your team, and build relationships with the Smarties, the game starts having RTS aspects where you start building based and try to destroy the Sea Reaperโ€™s bases. You might think this would be awkward and doesnโ€™t mesh well, but actually the TPS + RTS blend works stunningly well.

Nowadays, I donโ€™t think many people are impressed with the graphics, but back in 2000, this was considered cutting edge stuff. So good were the graphics, in fact, that people would often test out their PCs with this game. That said, I do like the graphics. For the same reason pixel art appeals to me, so does low poly art.

The sound design is likewise excellent. Particularly, the voice acting is phenomenal. I rarely look forward to cut scenes, but these cut scenes are core to the whole game. You donโ€™t want to miss them. The soundtrack is also great, but the star of the show is clearly the voice acting.

If thereโ€™s anything I donโ€™t like, itโ€™s that this game doesnโ€™t have a save anywhere feature. The game is only saved once you finish a mission. Since missions can sometimes be 15 minutes, this can get quite annoying fast.

Many people mention that this game has a great multiplayer feature, and it was popular for a short while at LAN parties. Iโ€™ve never tried the multiplayer, but hey, itโ€™s a thing.

Almost any modern PC can run this game. You need a 1Ghz single core CPU, 256MB of RAM, and 1.1GB of space. Integrated graphics will do fine. This game has native support for Windows and Mac, and can be run on Linux via Proton. Right now, however, it is not supported on Steam Deck.

In addition to PC, Giants has been ported to PS2. Is is unavailable on any mobile platforms.

Thereโ€™s no micro-transactions nor is there DLC.

Planet Moon Studios made Giants. In addition to this game, they also made Armed and Dangerous as well as Disney Tangled.

On Steam, Giants has a 95% positive rating based on 145 reviews. Many people agree that this is a hidden gem, a game that deserves more attention, and is completely unique. A few people on Steam feel that the Steam version isnโ€™t feature complete and is full of bugs โ€“ they recommend buying from GOG.com.

Personally, I bought the GOG.com version and itโ€™s been running without a hitch. It actually supports my resolution (1920x1200), which most modern games donโ€™t even do. There is some jankiness, but thatโ€™s to be expected with games of this era.

On Steam, Giants: Citizen Kabuto sells for C$10.99 but is on sale for -20% off at C$8.79. However, on GOG.com, itโ€™s still at regular price. I definitely recommend this game and think itโ€™s worth checking out, but if you donโ€™t want to monkey around with mods or patches, go with the GOG.com version.

This game is mostly forgotten nowadays but has a dedicated cult following. It is definitely both a hidden gem and a PC gaming classic.

nosherwan,
@nosherwan@fosstodon.org avatar

@keithjgrant @adactio the challenge is that front end apps will still need a meta framework for ssr.

Additionally web components dont offer a trivial state management solution.

Components have to be just templates & data loading will have to be done by something else.
