Tannus Armor: it’s so easy to install. We can print the entire instructions on the product.

[1] clean inside armor.
[2] insert inner tube into armor.
[3] insert armor into tire
[4] secure tire onto rim.
[5] inflate

I feel like they should finish that with the phrase, “Hey Presto“ and I think they’ve missed steps 3A and 4A, which are “cuss really loudly.”

nothingfuture,
@nothingfuture@mastodon.social avatar

@LoneLocust 4b. Break every tire lever you own.

Q9, E-bikes are called e-bikes but what do you call non electric bikes? And why?

#BikeNite #BikeNiteQ

@ascentale @InkySchwartz A9: Bikes. I call them bikes.

@moira asks a question about inner tubes that I've also been thinking about as I deal with so many flat tires:

Q4. How long do replacement tubes hold up in storage? And should tubes be changed out occasionally before they fail, and is it a time thing or a distance ridden thing?

Asking because I've had a replacement tube in my road repair kit for a while and I have no idea when or if I should swap it out.

nothingfuture,
@nothingfuture@mastodon.social avatar

@moira @bikescape @ascentale I’ve never had an inner tube get sticky from age, ever. If you keep them dry and out of the sun, they’re usually ok for me for 5-7 years (all other things being equal).

Okay: here’s the thing. My compost pile has taken some big hits in the last year or two. Nothing bad, mind you- but my use has outpaced my production.
I’ve been thinking about getting an electric shredder- to put the clippings/leaves/whatever through prior, with the hopes that increasing the surface area might help speed things along.
Is this worthwhile? Anyone have a machine recommendation?
(I’m simultaneously working on a better compost setup, worry not)

I don’t socialize a ton, normally. I’m introverted, work from home, and generally like keeping to myself.
But still, somehow, has introduced me to more of my neighbors in the last two years than anything else. I’ve traded plants, been given cuttings, given away extra starts, and developed a little group of people that chat, a bit, about our plants. It’s lovely.

We have a peer review crisis in computer science, and recent evidence of ChatGPT written peer reviews is just more evidence. Meanwhile, here are things I've been hearing re: benefits of gen AI:

(1) We can draft papers faster!
(2) We can do research faster for things like qualitative analysis of large data!
(3) We might not even need to run human subjects studies, since we can use AI to simulate participants!

Anyway, expect the "way too many papers being submitted" problem to get way worse.

nothingfuture,
@nothingfuture@mastodon.social avatar

@cfiesler Fully terrifying that otherwise smart people would believe any of those things are ok. Feels like a frog-in-the-pot type problem, you know?

This next question is from @edd about fixing a flat and what tools to carry when things are wet:

Q8. I recently ran into a small inconvenience and I've found a hole in my travel kit: a spare tube for wet days when patches just won't stick (or the tube is properly done). What's everyone's necessary road kit when a pickup isn't an option?

nothingfuture,
@nothingfuture@mastodon.social avatar

@ascentale @edd A8: My standard kit on my road bikes includes:

  1. A spare tube
  2. A patch kit (vulcanizing, not adhesive)
  3. A multitool (CrankBros)
  4. A tire lever (Pedro’s Milk)
  5. A frame pump

I might add a spare master link, but my multitool has a chaintool, so maybe not?

@daihard@infosec.town avatar

NBD... well, not exactly, but I picked up a 2015 Trek 1.1 for $200 USD. According to the seller, the bike was used once for a ride event (Seattle To Portland) but not much since. It's got the Shimano Claris with 11-28T, which isn't ideal for steep hills, but it's okay. I mainly intend to use it for errands and commuting.

nothingfuture,
@nothingfuture@mastodon.social avatar

@daihard So, if that’s 8 or 9spd, you could likely replace the cassette with a mtb one (say, 11-42?) and run a mtb rear derailleur. That would get you a lot more range at a (relative) minimum of cost.

How on earth can MS Teams be this bad

nothingfuture,
@nothingfuture@mastodon.social avatar

@ethanschoonover Remember, the App is called “Teams” and you use it to chat but there a section inside it also called “Teams” but that’s for talking to a group but you can have multiple “Teams” on Teams.
Also, it’s going to change your status randomly. And sometimes just crash. And sometimes it’ll make noise when someone sends a message. But sometimes it won’t.
Just an amazing hunk of shit of software.

And, somehow, still better than Jabber.

nothingfuture, to cycling
@nothingfuture@mastodon.social avatar

My current take: internal cable routing on bikes (and especially thru-headset routing) is stupid and worse. The aero benefits are stupid (unless, maybe, you’re racing- but if you’re fast enough to benefit you’re going to have a tech to deal with it for you). The maintenance is stupid. The routing makes shifting and breaking worse, and the “aesthetics” seem overblown.
I won’t buy a bike with through-headset routing, and I’d think hard before buying one with fully internal routing.

I’m using @IceCubesApp as my client on my iPhone, and I swear to god notifications hardly ever work. Like, I got a pile of replies last night, and they don’t/won’t show in my notifications tab at all. I’d never known they were there had I not manually looked at my posts. I’m running current iOS and the current app, so I’ve got no idea what’s going on.

nothingfuture,

@dgodon @IceCubesApp I’m guessing API, as it’s also incredibly sluggish on my Mac’s browser, too.

I'm going to have my kids make dinner for the family on a regular basis.

I'm going to start them off by giving them a few (3 to 6) recipes as good options for them to pick from.

E.g. A rice based meal recipe, a pasta recipe. One of them will be baked potatoes because, hey, baked potatoes are delish.

Question for mastodon:

What recipes would you include in this short list?

nothingfuture,
@nothingfuture@mastodon.social avatar

@ethanschoonover In my house of very picky eaters, two meals fair best:

  1. Chicken, Broccoli, and Pasta. We tend to keep the components separate and let people pick what combo they like.
  2. “Taco” night. That, for us, means spicy chicken, brown rice, black beans, Guac, salsa, cheese, and chips/flour tortillas. Again, components kept separate for individuals to combine.

A small suggestion: Carry good tools when you’re out on your bike. Some tiny lightweight multitool is fine, maybe, but it’s going to suck to use. Maybe it’s worth carrying a good tool to make your life suck less when a mechanical happens.
For instance: I carry full sized frame pumps. Getting a flat already sucks, and I don’t want to compound that suck with having to use a mini pump. If I have to use a pump mid ride, I’m going to have/use one that works better.

nothingfuture,
@nothingfuture@mastodon.social avatar

Another example: I sometimes ride bikes with 15mm bolt on axels. Not through axels, mind you- wheels with solid 10mm threaded axels with 15mm track nuts on the ends. When I do, I carry a 15mm box-end wrench. Not some shorty half length one, but a full sized wrench. If I have a mechanical and the wheel needs to come off, there’s at least the tiny salve of having a very nice tool that makes the fix that much easier.

nothingfuture,
@nothingfuture@mastodon.social avatar

Carrying the big tool adds weight and bulk to your kit- that’s true. And there are times where it’s a burden and more trouble than it’s worth. But it’s something you might consider anyway. A good, not shitty-to-use tool can turn a crappy time into a sightly less crappy time, and I find it often worth the trade off.

The only thing holding me back from putting a deposit down on a is the inability to decide on a Chris King headset colour.

Might go simple black and hold out for a green option to retrofit one day.

Monochrome colour on the frame, for reference. Planning on getting some custom Straight Cut Designs bags made locally for it - likely in Green & Blaze Orange RVX25 material if available.

Decisions … decisions.

nothingfuture,
@nothingfuture@mastodon.social avatar

@geo I mean, I’m kind of a sucker for a King in Black Sotto Voce on that bike, but I can see how that could be a bit plain.
Did you see their doing mix and match headsets right now? Might be cool.

nothingfuture,
@nothingfuture@mastodon.social avatar

@geo To be fair: there are, at this point, other good headset options out there. I’d argue that King was the only really good one for a while, but that’s not really the case anymore. It gets harder to justify their premium as a result. There may be other options less brutal in shipping, you know?

This is interesting.

innicycle Threadless Conversion Headset

innicycle's unique system combines a threadless stem adapter with a sealed cartridge bearing headset. The result: Finally a way to tastefully incorporate modern components with your vintage bicycle.### Advantages

  • Lower weight & greater rigidity
  • Retains stock threaded fork
  • Compatible with modern handlebars and stems
  • Easily adjusted bearing preload using only a 6mm hex key
  • Ultra low stack height (low stem position adjust-ability)

Fitment

The innicycle Threadless Conversion Headset™ is compatible with most road and some MTB bikes that originally came equipped with 1" threaded headsets and quill stems. Forks must be 1"-24 TPI threaded with a 7/8" (22.2mm) inside diameter. Both ISO and JIS* fork crowns are supported.

nothingfuture,
@nothingfuture@mastodon.social avatar

@tk I dunno. I don’t see this solving a big problem for me, though I own a number of bikes that (in theory) could utilize this.
I guess I just don’t find 1” threaded headsets that problematic? A good quality one, properly installed and adjusted should be totally fine. And there are a number of meaningful advantages to quill stems (height adjustability, comfort, esthetics). And there are lovely quill stems for 31.8mm bars, so you can run modern stuff.

Cleaned my bike chain with the usual (degreaser + several passes with soapy water) and also my pressure washer today. I’ve never gotten it so clean with so little effort. Maybe this will help this new-ish chain last more than 2000 miles 🥲

@whack I’m not going pretend it’s practical or even reasonable for most/many people, but… have you thought about fixed gear?
