@notroot@sharkey.world

Artist, writer, and epic fantasy aficionado by night. Code monster by day.

Been doin' this since before ARPANet... "War Games" came out after me.

I learned Pascal on a Kaypro 4 CP/M box. I once housed a Data General mainframe in the family chicken shack, terminal and all. I scavenged my first 5MB hard drive (you read that right) from that fridge. Those are just a few stories that few have ever heard, because few can understand.

But I also lived in the woods for years. Years. In tents, or yurts, or under tarps, or under stars and the sigh and susurus of the wind in the trees.

Life can take many shapes, and it can change shape.

You haven't heard of me, but I help shape an industry that profoundly influences the world. You can try to guess if you want. I don't mind. I'll even tell you if you're right.

If I were a conspiracy theorist, I would theorize that the latest "AI" hype is intended to give trolls new tools to manipulate the rest of us.

Just asking questions....

notroot,

@Nonilex Ahhhh... so THIS is why they subpoenaed the Sergeant. I had hoped it was about Jan. 6th, but wow... Guess we'll just never know who disabled alarms and told people which windows to break because (checks notes) Black congressmen under constant attack by multiple racist threats has a security detail.

WFT? Why isn't Roger Stone indicted?

Can you participate in a thought experiment with me? The posts warning about fascism are good, but I'm wondering what you think fascism actually looks like. Give a thought, and list what it looks like. Don't just say "the end of democracy." List what the concrete changes will be and make it local. "In my town/city/county/state the following will happen......" Think about it before replying. Not just for .

notroot,

@fulanigirl @blackmastodon It doesn't work that way. Fascism is hierarchical, so it starts at the top, out of sight. The whole fascist 2025 playbook is pretty much mask-off. Concentration camps. Mass deportation. I mean. That's local. Got immigrants in your city?

It's so frustrating. Because of what climate activists have done previously (which I wish they hadn't done, but it's not up to me what they choose to do) this latest incident of soup thrown at the Mona Lisa will most likely be blamed on climate activists by most of the public.

When this one was done by these French farming protesters. Most of the farmers' protests are actually taken in opposition to climate action and I believe that the fossil fuel funds them.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/style/2024/01/28/mona-lisa-soup-protest/

notroot,

@GreenFire Fucking leave masterpieces of art out of your activism. It might get "attention" but it's the wrong sort. Wanna take a risk? Be like Earth First and drain the oil out of caterpillars and fill fuel tanks with sugar... don't fucking attack completely unrelated ART.

notroot,

@GreenFire At least when Earth First did something, there were concrete results in the direction of the activism... machinery out of service, broken chain saws, torched tool sheds. Environment-damaging work was paused and interrupted.

Gluing your hand to a famous painting? Throwing soup at the Mona Lisa?

Fuck you. Those aren't climate activists. They're self-obsessed narcissists like any other entitled 1st-world fuck.

Not the most positive Framework 16 review. It seems like the additional complexity hurt it. https://www.theverge.com/24047424/framework-laptop-16-review

notroot,

@ernie Dammit I wish I needed a laptop. I'd do the Framework 13 AMD Ryzen tho... some of the best reviews of any laptop, like, ever.

Just spent 15 minutes configuring a laptop monster for about $1500. I really want it. But what would I use it for? My workstation is badass and I practically live at it.

Sigh.... I guess I'll wait until I have something approaching a "need" instead of a mere "want"...

lednabwm, to random

Exactly.....

notroot,

@Npars01 @lednabwm To be fair, it's not just Christianity... they're all like that to a greater or lesser extent. Certainly Islam cops this 'tude, too.

It's magical thinking, IMO. As soon as you are convinced that Jesus could walk on water, or that Ole Mo flew into the sky on the back of a magic deer-thing, or that Moses parted the Red Sea, or that Buddha obtained enlightenment, or that your guru on the stinking fetid shores of a corpse-choked river can actually levitate...

You have left sanity behind.

Extrapolate from there.

One of my favorite political action organizations, Swing Left, has announced a strategy for 2024. They're focused on 12 states that are critical to winning back the House for Democrats, keeping the narrow Democratic majority in the Senate, reelecting Biden-Harris, and building Democratic power in the states.

They plan to double down on supporting and building local grassroots groups, a key to current and future wins. It’s a great organization to get involved with.

This isn't my first migration.

I started out, like many, on , during the great Twitter migration. Not that I migrated from Twitter. No... I never had a Twitter account. Rather, I hoped that Mastodon could obtain the Network Effect, and help fundamentally alter the shape of social media for the foreseeable future.

So I made my own solo Masto instance and ran it for a good six months. It was cool. But then there was a glittery thing -- -- that caught my eye. So I joined that. Pretty soon the maintainer of Calckey (young BTW) dropped out, but forks forked. I waited. Then was the shit. But no...

Then, today, the admin of my former instance calckey.world made a new sharkey.world instance public, and I joined. is the new shit.

Because that's how I roll. On the Cutting Edge, baby.

Yeah......

notroot,

@maegul Yah I was tuned in enough to know that Calckey forks were coming. I didn't know when or what, but I checked out a few of the contenders. Sharkey looked interesting, but I think everyone tuned into the whole Misskey evolution groks that this is really about Rust VS RoR.

Having worked with both, I'm in the Rust camp.

notroot,

@maegul Yah Calckey is a Rust-based fork of Misskey, and Firefish and now Sharkey are forks of Calckey

I'm sick of dystopias. I want more utopian scifi/fantasy, like . Or Ursula K Le Guin.

Sci-fi predicts the future. Fantasy re-imagines the past, and how it could create different futures. Both are about the future, though. Every great epic fantasy is either post-apocalyptic or pre-apocalyptic. The Wheel of Time is both. Sometimes the apocalypse is averted, sometimes it is not. Sometimes the apocalpyse is bad, sometimes it is good.

With shows like the Rings of Power and TWoT, we're getting a dose. But they're not novels. I'm still waiting for GRR Martin and Patrick Rothfuss to put out... but I'm a writer too, so I get it. It's hard in a way that other things just... aren't.

Utopias, man. Utopias. How can we fix this shitshow? That's what I wanna read, and watch, in creative new ways.

notroot,

The Shannara Chronicles is also both pre- and post-apocalyptic, now that I think of it. So is NK Jemisin's Shattered Earth trilogy.

@lizstl13 One of the released Israeli hostages reported being held by a UNRWA teacher, and fed almost nothing.

UNRWA, predictably, acted all huffy, demanding evidence (beyond eyewitness testimony, I guess) and their usual lying, terrorist-loving, antisemitic song-and-dance.

UNRWA abuses in Palestine and Gaza have been well-documented for years.

Anyone demanding evidence can go fucking Google that shit, themselves.
