Welcome to my tiny corner of the internet! I'm an accessibility specialist for WhatsApp, which is about the least exciting thing about me. I also play video games--while blind! I hosted a politics podcast with Matt Cooper called The Game Is Rigged from 2017-2018. I've produced and acted in the Worm full-cast Audiobook project. I host a weekly show called Thoughtfood on Venom.FM from 12 to 3 PM PST on Sundays. I also sing and play drums. I'm even a snappy dresser--though this is disputed!

MetaAI goes multimodal on ray bands!

People in the US and Canada can now ask the AI to describe pictures taken by the glasses camera. You can also send video from the glasses to WhatsApp or messenger calls! https://about.fb.com/news/2024/04/new-ray-ban-meta-smart-glasses-styles-and-meta-ai-updates/

@nolan I like them! There's definitely some stuff I would like that they do not do, like describing people for instance. Most of the descriptions are fairly terse, but it does support follow-ups so you can usually get the information you want. E.G "What am I looking at?" "You are looking at what appears to be a parking lot, with trees and rows of cars." "What kinds of cars are they?" "They appear to be mostly Minivans, with some Christler's and Toyota's." And $300 beats the hell out of Envision!

objectinspace,
@objectinspace@freeradical.zone avatar

@nolan I'm not sure what you mean by speech to text. You ask it voice commands and it answers you in voice, though I believe it also saves a history of your AI interactions in the app so you can look at them later. I haven't needed to do that though.

The sound quality is okay, I like it better than the Bose Frames I used to have, but it is not a replacement for headphones. It is good enough that you might not care just walking around though.

I keep getting a bluescreen whenever I restart due to something causing ntoskrnl.exe to lock pages. How can I debug the problematic driver or process that is causing this?

objectinspace,
@objectinspace@freeradical.zone avatar

@alltherum Which logs are most helpful here? I can find the critical where the computer shut down, but it just says that it shut down, there's no explanation provided. I am looking at the bluescreen which tells me the process that is locking the pages, but it's an OS process, meaning that something else is calling it which I have not been able to locate.

objectinspace,
@objectinspace@freeradical.zone avatar

@alltherum It's very predictable, it happens whenever I tell it to restart or shut down. Well, not every time as I have discovered, but almost every time once I let it to boot up fully. Have disconnected all my peripherals apart from my keyboard and ethernet. I also ran tron hoping it would fix it, but no dice. I believe tron includes sfc /scannow, which did find and repair errors when it was ran. Running it again, though, did not find any errors but I'm still getting crashes.

objectinspace,
@objectinspace@freeradical.zone avatar

@alltherum I sit corrected, I just tried and it restarted without issue this time. But this morning I let it sit for a few hours after a restart without doing anything else and it crashed this morning when I tried shutting down. I was trying esentially the same experiment today by leaving it on without doing anything for a few hours, I assumed it would crash again but it did not this time... so I have no idea what the commonality is. But it happens usually when I try and shut down or restart.

Example of plural oops:
Me to James: I can't remember the name of this utility Simon would ask me to run if he knew I were looking to spruce up my PC before a long trip where discrete communication would be needed.
James: So, call Simon and ask him?
Me: I could, but, I want to see if Cassie brain will remember the name of this dang tool.
James: Do you remember where you heard about it?
Me: While talking to my Alter Aeon friends. So definitely something the Cassie alias would have access to. If I can't remember the name of it and Simon doesn't know what I'm talking about, I'll ping Athlon...
several days later
Me: I've got it!
James: Got what?
Me: It's this PC clean-up tool all my AA friends were using. It's called Tron.
James: Never heard of it.

@singingnala Oh wow, never saw this, it looks really useful! Doesn't it kill NVDA though? I guess you can restart it though.

objectinspace,
@objectinspace@freeradical.zone avatar

@singingnala I ask because one of the first things it says it does is end all the user-launched processes, apart from stuff that comes with windows like explorer or the window manager. I assume that would include NVDA. It only does it once though so you could just relaunch with ctrl+alt_n. I am about to run it for SNGs, so will report back.

objectinspace,
@objectinspace@freeradical.zone avatar

@singingnala It did not, in fact, kill NVDA.

Why buy Waves Creative?

I snagged the vocal production bundle a few years ago for around $350. That also let me pick three free plugins, and free updates for a year. Now I need a new plugin, so I bought one new plugin, and a second one while I was there, for $65. This gives me another free plugin, another another year of updates, which includes plugins that were newly added to the bundle.

I now have all the plugins I will ever need! The subscription would drown me in plugins, and cost more!

objectinspace,
@objectinspace@freeradical.zone avatar

Ah, I see: the updates only apply to the plugins you purchase at that time, not to all of your purchases. You have to pay for updates on a per plugin basis. But you get to decide when you want to pay. But the creative bundle probably works out more over time, especially if you are an active producer who is always working and needs a a bunch of different things.

objectinspace,
@objectinspace@freeradical.zone avatar

@ZBennoui I think it is $12 per plugin. Not a lot individually, but it would certainly add up if you have hundreds of plugins, making the subscription more attractive. But if you pay "as you go" then you don't need to keep paying even when there's no real benefit E.G. no new updates. Meh. They gotta make money somehow I guess, they have so many that it would be tough to justify continuing to update plugins unless people keep paying for them. That said I am kind of screwed because I got a bundle.

objectinspace,
@objectinspace@freeradical.zone avatar

@ZBennoui By which I mean, I bought 20 plugins, but I really only use RChannel, which I would be happy to keep updated but I have to buy the update renewal for the whole bundle. I think. Maybe if I went to that page specifically I could update it? Not sure actually.

Trying out StemRoller, a stem separation tool based on Demucs. The GUI is very accessible; much more so than UVR.

@seedy I just did a thing yesterday with AudioStrip https://audiostrip.co.uk/isolate It lets you use Demucs or VB-Splitz. Not as good as using them natively unless you pay for it but the web UI was quite accessible,.

@MisuseCase Do we know that Meta is lobbying congress to ban Tiktok? It wouldn't surprise me, but I haven't seen reporting to that effect, only stuff from a couple of years ago about how they hired a consulting firm to plant stories. I have seen recent reporting on meetings with congresspeople and intelligence agencies. @acedtect @pch

The YouTube app on iOS is getting so bad that I'm seriously considering canceling YouTube premium. The number of swipes required for a single video listing is increasing, not decreasing; and there's a swipe trap in the title section of the video player now, so you have to explore by touch to get past a certain point. Anyone know the best way to give accessibility feedback on Google apps? I can't imagine they are somehow unaware of how stunningly awful this app has become, but I can at least write to them and say I did my part.

objectinspace,
@objectinspace@freeradical.zone avatar

@dhamlinmusic @simon LOL you think Sundar knows the accessibility lead for any product? Not a chance. Good luck with that though!
