I keep brooding on the way the xz backdoor was enabled in significant part via weaponizing the FOSS culture of shitty behavior and abuse.
Yes, there're other pathologies at work here (the big tech capitalist pillaging of the commons, etc).
But what is striking is that the uncool, mean standards of FOSS conduct that many of us have decried for years, & that many defended as authentic, tough, etc., ended up not just being exclusionary loser behavior, but a significant attack surface.
@inquiline @Mer__edith
I haven't read @inquiline 's previous work in this area, but it occurs that perhaps more attention should be paid to the construct of "Github as a social network"; since the possible negative outcomes of the interactions there could be just as consequential as those from the usual suspects
@kissane
That's an interesting connection. Seems like this is a field of inquiry requiring more attention, considering that the outputs of these specific social dynamics pretty much undergird many or most information systems in existence today

November 12, 1916. San Francisco, California. International Mass Meeting in Commemoration of the 29th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of the Chicago Anarchists. Speakers included Enrique Flores Magón, Alexander Berkman, Luigi Galleani (if he made it to the coast in time), and other international anarchists and socialists.

Hi, just wanted to confirm that the vegansim.social website is indeed updated and reliable and, in fact, auto-checks all instances periodically to confirm their Meta blocks are in place. It's the best resource for finding a Threads-free instance. https://fedipact.veganism.social/?v=2
I mean folks, just to be clear, the problem is not Jorts; in fact, I trust Jorts implicitly to do the right thing when it comes to "fuck off and die, nazis" on any level whatsoever.
The problem is that the fedi itself works in a certain way that means if my goal is to have a company like Meta, who I firmly believe will hand over everything they know about me to the nazis when the time comes, to not KNOW about me, that's basically impossible no matter WHAT Jorts does within reason.
@AnarchoNinaWrites
Not sure from your comments if you've taken this factor into account - it's terribly confusing even for people who work with the tech - but if Jorts blocks Meta AND activates authorized fetch, that should actually keep your posts and account info away from Meta. Under those conditions, if followers on collaborator instances boost your posts, they won't federate over to Meta for data collection
@AnarchoNinaWrites
Yeah, it's something of a delicate operation to ask your admin for that. I nagged the Kolektiva admins about it a couple times, and they're about to turn it on.
On the problem you described, I empathize, I've run into that myself. But it would only really work for you if it's activated on your instance.
@autistic_enby
True enough, authorized fetch can't solve every problem related to staying safe on social media. What's right in front of us is the prospect of Meta conducting surveillance and data collection of the information we offer up on the fedi, which up to this point has been a relative bastion of privacy respect. Activating authorized fetch can help with that and is a step in the right direction; there will be many more to take
Is there a documented, credible source for why Jack Dorsey has distanced himself from #BlueSky?
I know the narrative is that he now doesn't have as much power and influence over the platform and protocol. But what is that based on? The fact that he deleted his BlueSky account and now hangs on Nostr?
@fromjason
Just a thought on the typical narrative. A presence on the board of directors is a slightly more consequential involvement than possessing a user account, don't you think? Any argument based only on the user account thing is pretty flimsy. Jack's stink is all over the architecture and its pseudo-philosophical underpinnings
