Last month @gabek spoke to the attendees of @ubuntu Summit in Riga, Latvia, about Owncast and how live video streaming works.

I can’t promise it’s the most entertaining thing you’ll watch all day, but if you’re into , or even streaming video in general, you might get something from it.

Enjoy!

experts I'm having a difficult time finding information about how to host @owncast locally (as in do all the stream encoding) but serve it through a cheap VPS, so that I'm not exposing my residential IP address. Is that possible? I would appreciate any tips or links to resources.

I'm using a digital ocean droplet with the Owncast referral code but I won't be using it enough to justify ~$20/mo after the promotional credit runs out.

@shom I'm sure you could hack something together, but that's not Owncast is built to run, so it wouldn't be something you could do out of the box. You can absolutely host Owncast locally (I run an instance from my apartment), but it's public on the internet. A couple of people have mentioned a VPN or other type of tunnel, so maybe that's the answer. But honestly, I'm not sure, it's not really an Owncast-specific thing.

Thanks to a suggestion from @roadriverrail we're seeing if there's any interest in a periodic Owncast community email. The idea is to feature streamers, share tips, highlight releases, and try to reach out a bit more.

If you think this should exist, feel free to throw your email into the hat. If nobody is interested, that's cool too! Like always, we only want to create things people actually want.

Is there a primer on self-hosted live streaming a podcast? I've searched in vain. I'm looking for a step by step basic guide. This link at Icecast isn't simple enough for me. https://icecast.org/docs/icecast-2.3.0/basic-setup.html

I understand traditional podcasting and live streaming using RTMP to services like YouTube. But I don't understand how to use software like Icecast and how to stream from my PC at home or via my Apache virtual server where I host my mp3s for my podcast while also recording using Audacity.

@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@DavidMarzalC @kevinb66 It sounds like from your mention of Icecast you're looking to stream audio. Owncast is for video, though of course, you could stream audio with a static image or something. Some use https://github.com/gabek/vadeo to restream their internet radio (Icecast) audio streams to video.

Would @owncast be interested in WebRTC support? I may have a POC working :blobcat3c:

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@verbumfeit I kind of see that being a solution to a different problem. Owncast is meant to be a simple way to do one to many live streaming that can be powered, and scaled, by existing web infrastructure. WebRTC is a whole different thing than that. WebRTC ingest, if that were more popular, could be something that might make sense, but I haven’t ever seen that done anywhere.

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@verbumfeit Do report back! If WebRTC ingest is going to be a thing, that's something I'd be interested in if it has any benefits.

How easy is it to get running?

https://owncast.online/quickstart

There are a few methods, pick the best for you. Here's an example, using the installation script. No npm, no pip, no Ruby gems. Just get up and running, so you can start streaming.

@kurth @gdt We’re 110% up for somebody supporting the packages for the major Linux distributions. It’s just not something the project can take on itself.

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@gdt There are many ways to install Owncast, this is just one of them that people find convenient.

Owncast will be at Summit in Riga, Latvia November 3-5!

Gabe, the project maintainer, will be giving a talk about self-hosting live video streams and how Owncast might be able to help you do that on the 4th, at noon.

Plan on saying hi to Gabe, because he has cool pins (and stickers, of course) to give you.

Just noticed that isn’t doing t-shirts this year. That was always cool, but I totally get it.

still has t-shirts for contributors, dedicated users and supporters of the project, however!

It’s time! If you’re not familiar, Hacktoberfest is the annual event that encourages people to contribute to Open Source software throughout the month of October.

If you’ve ever been thinking of finding a way to contribute to Owncast, this month is a great time. Documentation, code, designs, social, blog posts and more are all a great way to take part in the project.

The Owncast project runs a demo server at https://watch.owncast.online. This server runs a series of short promos and informational video clips for projects and initiatives, and we'd love to use this space for yours as well.

If you have some open source software, a fediverse-related project, or creative-commons licensed content and have a short video clip for sharing, we'd be happy to add it to the rotation. Reach out!

@techgeeklife There's no plans for Owncast to support audio-only streaming, but if you reduce your output framerate to something low you'd be getting close.

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@techgeeklife The resolution can be super low if that's how the streamer configures Owncast. Supporting low bitrates, low resolution, etc for low bandwidth users are exactly what they're for.

You might think after reading this post "Hasn't Owncast been saying this for years?" Yes. And we still haven't given up!

As new, very cool, features start to get planned, the Owncast project is on the hunt for a user experience designer to help us turn them into reality.

Do you want to have a say in how new features, that will get into people's hands, work and look? Now is the time to get involved, early on, so you can have influence on them.

Reach out and say hi!

    @martijn When Owncast was built with the way you wish it was, there were zero contributors and people were very turned off by it. You might be interested in this post: https://gabekangas.com/blog/2023/02/owncast-v0.1.0-retrospective-frontend-web-rewrite/
